Good/Bad sites

Best Site:
http://www.mapquest.com
I think there is something to be said from just plain useful content,
although this site also passes the "Ten Things to Avoid" test. For
example, there are no frames, marquees, or orphans, and they have divided
it into three clesr sections with definitions-you can get visual maps,
driving directions, or buy maps. I swear I'm not a big map geek, but I use
this site a lot--to find estate sale addresses from classifieds in the
N&O, to give people directions to my house, to find restaurants etc. In
fact, you can email the
map link, which works really well as well.
There is some gratuitous technology, but to get to it, there is a "Cool
Applet Technology" icon, and you can get an interactive mapquest site
w/java, w/ a plug-in called Marimba(eliminates applet downlaod), or
with ActiveX. The site is simple, uncluttered, and while the colors aren't
my favorite, I think the content is some of the most useful.

Worst Site:
http://www.musicanddance.com
I really can't talk about bad sites, since mine has some black background
and some REALLY big download times, and gratuitous technology. However,
this site is really bad, in my opinion. Although it really only breaks a
few of the "rules," (i.e.,frames and poor organization) when I
went to the page to sign some friends up for
swing lessons, I had No IDEA where to go on the page. Apparently, it's a
group of sub-businesses, but frankly, I think they each need their own
page, or the page needs some sort of organizational revamping. They use a
really ugly fram at the top of the page, and a lot of the pages are
useless information. I think they have a lot to deal with and it could be
done much better with the schedules and general navigation.
