Re: A Modest Proposal
For my class project, I am planning a website on the Biltmore Hotel, an
establishment in Durham's Hayti District that (sadly) no longer exists.
In the first half of the century (but especially during the 'thirties and
'forties), when Durham was home to one of the most important black
middle-class communities in the country, the Biltmore Hotel was one of THE
stopping places for travelling African-Americans. The Biltmore is, (I
believe) best remembered as having been a prominent venue for jazz and
Blues musicians--supposedly everybody who was anybody played there. The
last owner of the restaurant is still alive, but I don't how up he is for
an interview (he's 102). This project has potential for some great video,
audio, and stills. Last night, I spoke to a Durham archivist who's doing
some groundreaking work on African-American Durham (you may have read
about him--Andre Vann--he was profiled in the N&O two weeks ago), he told
me he thought I was onto a really great topic, and he suggested some
places to start looking for material.
If you want to work with me on this, you know where to find me (at least
on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons)...
Kevin
