Internet grief
I like the feature of Loudy's site that allows users to create unmediated
content. I think it's a good idea to have unmediated forums for
timely issues that people want to discuss immediately without the delays
associated with a gatekeeper. Because Diana's death was such a shock and
the public grieving over it may not be an ongoing discussion, an
unmediated forum serves the discussion well. Other more complicated
issues such as privacy and the role of the press are more complex and long
term conversations that would be better served through a mediated
discussion.
There are a few points that Lainson missed that Bai and Loundy discussed:
- Because there are no geographic boundaries on the Internet, users can
grieve together from different locations all over the world.
- People are using the Internet not only to grieve, but also to vent and
express their outrage over Diana's death.
- Users are able to have their grief and opinions heard by not only other
mourners, but also by photojournalists, including the president of the
National Press Photographers Association.
