IBM to give 10 mil $$ for tech in the classrooms

Begun in 1995 with 10 school systems getting awards including "the
Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools in North Carolina [where they] established
Internet links between housing projects and classrooms, letting parents
browse their children's work," the second round of grants will be
announced today with Durham, NC being one of the second 10 awardees.

"Around New York state, the Department of Education is planning to emulate
the experiment begun in Charlotte, but with a twist. Instead of enabling
teachers to communicate by e-mail and over the Internet with parents, the
state will arrange for teachers in districts hundreds of miles apart to
share models of good teaching and student work, said Christopher
Carpenter, a department spokesman."
