A little Microsoft levity
First, something that was forwarded to me:
Windows 95:
32 bit extensions and a graphical shell for a
16 bit patch to an
8 bit operating system originally coded for a
4 bit microprocessor, written by a
2 bit company, that can't stand
1 bit of competition.
Second, to build off of what Paul said, the point is NOT that Microsoft
has everyone using their OS. I use it.
The argument comes when Microsoft starts using its advantage in the OS
market to unfairly influence competition in other, non-OS areas.
An analogy would be a daily newspaper, (let's admit) a legal monopoly and
a local printed shopper. The shopper is starting to attract advertisers
away from the newspaper. So the newspaper decides to cut its ad rates for
the shopper and create "package" deals -- buy an ad in the newspaper, get
an ad in the shopper for $1.
The point is not the newspaper's expertise in serving its audience. That
expertise, however, does not give it the right to eliminate competition in
other, more open areas.
