ibiblio sites strongly related to providing services and outreach to North Carolina

ibiblio boasts a 15-year history of serving North Carolina-centric web sites, audio and video. ibiblio provides our public schools in particular with freely available resources that are educational, cultural, and just plain fun, from several sites concerning North Carolina Ghost Stories to pages on Moonshine and the Spivey's Corner Hollerin' Contest.

For an exhaustive list, check out the nearly 150 sites marked as North Carolina-related in our Collection Index

Highlighted North Carolina-themed sites include:

  • Etree.org offers nearly 7,800 live music shows that were recorded in North Carolina, freely and legally available for download over BitTorrent.
  • More Than Math uses the art of Josef Albers from Black Mountain College to teach 3rd-5th grade math principles from the state math standards.
  • iNSIDEoUT serves all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and allied youth in North Carolina.
  • The Heirs' Project aims to strengthen and broaden the base of North Carolina social justice organizers.
  • The Confluence Project has registered visits to all 13 of the Degree Confluence points in NC and is used in many 4th and 5th grade classrooms.
  • Project Gutenberg is a rich free-text resource including over 20,000 books, the following four concerning North Carolina:

Etext# 3126 entitled: On Horseback, by Charles Dudley Warner is about North Carolina in part.

Radio Streams

One of ibiblio's strongest contributions to the state has been that of providing stable, continuous online streaming of North Carolina-based non-profit radio stations: WCPE, WUNC, WXYC, WXDU, WDAV, and WCOM, all free of charge. We typically see up to 50,000 unique listeners on weekdays as we serve North Carolina's radio stations to areas of the state not covered by the individual stations' towers.

In 1994 ibiblio (then SunSITE) pioneered online radio streaming by offering UNC's student station, WXYC, on the nascent 'Net. Ten years later, ibiblio began serving WCPE as one of the first online radio streams to use the IPV6 protocol.
