Since the TRDL is fairly new and in a dart-league rich area (there are at least five or six separate leagues in the Research Triangle area!), it is still relatively small. The league has seen five or six teams in each of its first three seasons (at three seasons a year). Because of its small size, there are very few rules - we use the ADO's rules on board setup and diddles but beyond that, it's up to the captains of the competing teams (and common-sense sportsmanship) to guide match play.
That's right! The captains rule the league. Whatever is mutually agreeable on match night is fine with the league's administrators (commonly referred to as the Poo-Bahs). If the captains can't agree, the Poo-Bahs will settle the matter with the overall good of the league in mind. Thus far, this has proven to be a very successful formula for a fun evening of darts among friends.
Due to the small size of the league there are currently no divisions. Everyone knows everyone else and the vast majority of players who have thrown in the league come back the following season. This is due as much to the relaxed, yet competitive atmosphere as to the unique format.
As was mentioned, the captains have the final say in how the league is run (we like that, so we say it a lot). Voting is done via our weekly newsletter, the Rolling Paper, and any member of the league can submit issues they wish to have voted upon. Two weeks are allowed for discussion and other members are encouraged to submit pro or con articles for publication.
Like other leagues, we have a season-ending party and trophy presentation to season and tournament winners. In addition to the "usual" individual awards, such as Best 301 Record and such, awards are also given for the most tons-or-better and 5 mark/3 bull-or-better. Just another little difference in the TRDL.
