Where We Play Darts - A TRDL Pub Guide
Spring 1998 Edition
- The Asylum at Steve & Clark's Brew Pub & Sausage Company (115 N. Duke St.) is billed as "the world's largest indoor insane asylum," and who are we to argue? You certainly can't beat a place that brews some of the tastiest micro-brews in the State as well as hosting a spectacular lunch buffet. You'll come for the darts, but you'll be back for the food, brew and slightly bent atmosphere. Don't forget to look up as soon as you walk in. The Asylum is upstairs from the main restaurant. The address is 115 N. Duke St., but the entrance is actually on the west (Gregson St.) side of the building, off the parking lot across from Brightleaf Square. Phone 919.688.4505
- Doyle's Sports Bar (3219A Chapel Hill Rd.) is a great little family-owned neighborhood bar that you can't help feeling at home in right away. Their main focus is pool and the local pool leagues, but in a room of their own are four well-maintained dart boards just waiting for you. You'll find them at 3219A Chapel Hill Rd. (about a quarter mile off University Dr.) - they're in the back of the building, under Piper's Deli (which fronts on Chapel Hill Rd.). Full bar, all permits (private club), no food (but there's always Piper's upstairs) and friendly staff and regulars. Phone 919.419.9791
- PJ's Sports Bar (2223 Chapel Hill-Nelson Rd. [NC Hwy.54]) takes their darts seriously - they have six boards located in a separate space away from the hustle and bustle of the pool area in front of the bar. There's hardly a night when you won't find league play, a luck-of-the-draw or just a few friends throwing for fun. Several TVs are scattered around for the fans of other sports, too. All ABC permits (it's a private club) and limited bar munchies. Just off I-40 on NC 54 east of NC 55, convenient to just about everywhere in the Triangle. Just watch out for Karaoke Night! Phone 919.361.2390
- Ray's Elbow Room (4206 NC Hwy. 55) is a comfortable, laid-back roadhouse that caters to several sub-species of sporting persons. They have four dart boards, a pool table, a back deck for warm summer evenings and a volleyball league, not to mention the ubiquitous sports-on-TV. The beer is cold, the ribeye sandwich and onion rings will leave a big smile on your face and the teams playing and practicing darts there are some of the best in the city. Just north of I-40 on NC 55 and open for the lunchtime crowds from the Park. All ABC permits. Phone 919.544.0014
- Satisfaction Restaurant & Bar (905 W. Main St.) is returning to the dart scene after a few years' absence and we're happy to welcome them back to the action. It's inside the Brightleaf Square warehouse at 905 W. Main St. and features two boards in a private room, a diverse and interesting menu and more beers than you can possibly sample in a year of trying. You'll always find a wide range of people in there, from Dukies to business folks to trendies weary of the Brightleaf shops to "just plain folks" stopping in for a sandwich and a beer. Several evenings, the dart room is occupied by meetings and such, so beware. All ABCs. Phone 919.682.7397
- Ye Olde Tavern (5405 Chapel Hill Blvd. [US 15/501]) is way out on the western fringe of the Greater Durham Metroplex. It's tough to find the first time, but worth the trip. The address is 5405 Chapel Hill Blvd., but it's not on Chapel Hill Blvd. Head out US 15/501 and turn north on Mt. Moriah Rd. (just east of I-40 Exit 270) like you were going to the new "Rape of the New Hope Creek Watershed" Shopping Center. Turn left on the service road just before the center and YOT will be on your left, across from the OfficeMax store. Once you're there, at least check out the "California Style Pizza" and (certainly!) a beer or two. The dart boards are in a room of their own downstairs past the bar. Until recently, it was known as "Boulevard Tavern," but it's not really on the Boulevard (US 15/501), either. Go figure... All ABCs. Phone 919.493.5957
