Goals

  1. Identify common ground and critical differences between the EU and US approaches to DL education.
  2. Articulate a 5-year plan for achieving a joint EU-US DL curriculum.

9:00 - 9:30 Introductions and overview
9:30 - 10:30 SWOT analysis discussion: The current state of DL education and curriculum in participants' institutions
10:30 - 11:00 Break
11:00 - 12:30 SWOT analysis discussion: Breakout group discussion on the current state of national / continental visions of DL education:
  • The US perspective: e.g., with reference to cyberinfrastructure and e-science
  • The EU perspective: e.g., with reference to i2010 and the European Curriculum Reflections on Library and Information Science Education report
12:30 - 1:30 Working lunch (buffet lunch provided)
1:30 - 2:30 Panel session: Report on breakout discussions, identify common ground and critical differences between the US and EU perspectives
2:30 - 3:30 Discussion of a 5-year plan for coordinating DL education: Coordinating US and EU perspectives
3:30 - 4:00 Break
4:00 - 6:00 Reception with SILS faculty

Day 2: Friday 7 November 2008

Goals

  1. Identify what each participating institution can contribute to a joint EU-US DL curriculum.
  2. Develop a rough draft of a proposal for the 2009 EU-US ATLANTIS Programme CFP.

Panel on Open Source in DL Education

The forum will bring together experts in the field of open source software and platforms to discuss the impact of OSS on education in digital librarianship and in information and library science generally.

Among other topics, we anticipate discussions of open source digital library applications, and the Virtual Computing Initiative (VCI) and the NC State Virtual Computing Lab (VCL).
