This software represents many months of development and refinements, as well as a beta test program involving many dedicated individuals around the world. Instructions to unpack xmcd binary and other info ------------------------------------------------- Before you unpack the xmcd binary distribution, you should ensure that your copy is genuine and uncorrupted. The xmcd web page at http://sunsite.unc.edu/~cddb/xmcd/ lists the checksum of this distribution. You should use the sum(1) utility to compare the checksum of your copy against the published checksum. If they differ, do not use your copy. You must have the "gunzip" (GNU unzip) utility to unpack this package. The source code to gzip/gunzip can be found on various FTP sites (such as prep.ai.mit.edu:/pub/gnu). The xmcdbin.tar.gz file is a GNU zip'ed tar archive containing the binary release of xmcd. To extract, put the xmcdbin.tar.gz file in /tmp on your target system and do the following while logged in as root: cd /tmp gunzip < xmcdbin.tar.gz | tar xvf - sh ./install.sh Xmcd must run setuid root on most systems because the SCSI passthrough interface to the OS kernel requires superuser privilege. Xmcd is careful about security and changes the uid back to the user before accessing any files or invoking external programs. See the README file before using xmcd. Take a look at the resources in LIBDIR/app-defaults/XMcd. If there are anything you wish to customize you can put them in your .Xdefaults file. To use xmcd, simply type "xmcd" while logged into the system under the X windows environment. Make sure the DISPLAY environment variable is set properly. A help button is available on the xmcd main window. You can also get feature-specific help on any button, control, slider, indicator, list or text entry area by positioning the mouse cursor over the feature, and clicking the mouse button number 3.
