the script, or ftp to tsx-11 and get /usr/linux/packages/TeX/MakeTeXPK

bad base file, remake with:
inimf plain\; input modes\; input dump
mv plain.base /usr/TeX/lib/mf/bases/mf.base

the cmr6.mf file is probably missing. ftp to pip.shsu , cd tex-archive/fonts/cm
and get it (dir may not be just right.

ftp to tsx-11.mit.edu cd to /pub/linux/packages/TeX/Milieu and get
XFree86.tz and TeX.tz (names may differ), unpack in a temp dir and then
move the X libs and TeX binaries. this has an X version of mf..you dont
have to use/have X to use it..just need the X11 lib. btw, why not use
X, it only needs 4 Megs disk space
