Lars, 

Don't feel badly about your efforts.  We appreciate what
you have been doing.  The task is huge, even if it were a
paying job.  I have run into similar conflicts in my own
"pro bono" work.  Whoever attempts this job should be
prepared for lots of work, and they should also be familiar
with the relevant technologies: man tools, TexInfo, SGML,
etc. 

Have you considered approaching the FreeLore Project about
them managing this effort?  They are well organized, and 
their efforts are a good match for the Linux project.

There may be people who have worked with the Committee for
Common Man who would be qualified and interested in this. 
One name in particular comes to mind: Peter da Silva... 
I'll do some checking around, too.
