The XFree86 Project, Inc is the organisation which produces XFree86™, a freely redistributable open-source implementation of the X Window System. XFree86 runs primarily on UNIX® and UNIX-like operating systems such as Linux, all of the BSD variants, Sun Solaris x86, Mac OS X (via Darwin), as well as other platforms like OS/2 and Cygwin.
XFree86, provides a client/server interface between display hardware (the mouse, keyboard, and video displays) and the desktop environment while also providing both the windowing infrastructure and a standardized application interface (API). XFree86 is platform-independent, network-transparent and extensible.
The goals and purpose of XFree86 are detailed in our Mission Statement.

Development Snapshots & Independent Drivers
[3 November 2003]
While it has been in the experimental stage for a while, and so hidden on our Resources page (Tip: look there often for other experimental ideas), we are finally proud to unveil on our Development Snapshots page Independent Driver Releases .
These Independent Driver Releases help making plugging in the latest experimental driver try-outs all the easier in your base XFree86. This is a real bonus for those who only install full releases of XFree86 and just want to see what's new or those who are worried that the Snapshots are just a little too cutting edge and may leave an unstable XFree86 platform for them to use.
As always with these experimental try-outs, community feedback is crucial so keep up the good work.
XFree86 4.4.0 Release Schedule
[3 October 2003]
Currently we are in Feature Freeze mode for the 4.4.0 release of XFree86 and on track for making the Release Date. Further information about the schedule is available on our release plans page.
A feature list of what is being highlighted in 4.4.0 will become available shortly.
Our web site is very busy and often causes timed out connections. The following sites have been verified as being both accurate and reliable in their mirroring process, so we recommend them for best access:
The master web site is located at http://www.XFree86.org/
While XFree86 is no longer seeking new web mirrors we are still need ftp mirrors particularly for upcoming release time when our server gets very busy. If you are interested in becoming a download mirror, please send a note to mirroradmin@XFree86.org with the subject line: New Mirror @ Your Location (city, state, country as appropriate). Once your site has been verified you will be updated to the mirrrors page.
Mirror site can rsync our download area by using rsync.xfree86.org::XFree86 all others should avoid this method of connection as the limits for rsync are relatively low.
