You might contact Yiqi ("eechee") Luo at the Desert Research Institute; he
derived some soil temperature equations as a doctoral student at Davis.
Modeling soil temperature mechanistically is tricky; many if not most
models treat a lot of it empirically.
I don't have his e-mail handy, but you should be able to get it
from the Univ. Nevada Reno phonebook via gopher.

The PRZM-II manual reviews 9 soil temp. models and then states
how PRZM-II uses van Bavel and Hillel (1976) and Thibodeaux (1979)
to estimate upper boundary temperature. Soil profile temps
were estimated from Hanks et al (1971), Gupta et al (81,82,83),
and Wagenet and Hutson (87)
NOTE:
PRZM-II is a model from the US EPA that predicts pesticide fate in
the crop root zone and unsaturated soil zone. The current version
is PRZM-II Version 2, Oct 94. Code and manual available by anonymous

You might be interested in a model developed by the New Zealand
Ministry of Ag and Fisheries and Oregon State University. It does not
compute reference ET (such as Penman) but requires reference ET as an
input. However it then uses reference ET to determine the required
interval between irrigations. The model accounts for spatial
variability of soil characteristiccs and application patterns. Wind
run is used to adjust uniformity for sprinklers on a day by day basis.
Spatial variations in applications and infiltration are used to
establish runoff and redistribution patterns. Sprinkler design
parameters (nozzle size, pressure) are used in conjunction with wind
runs to establish spray loss and redistribution rates. All of these
factors impact soil water distribution, which in turn impacts the
required timing of irrigations. The user specifies the management
rules, such as the degree of soil water depeletion at which an
irrigation should be called for, and the portion of the field that
the system will be managed for (e.g. the portion that represents the
80th percentile of moisture holding capacity).
The model is described in ICID Bulletin, Vol. 41 No. 2, 1992. If

Dear agmodels-l,
I have seen a few posts to agmodels-l mentioning crop yields (from
Meindert de Jong <TPEJONG@RCL.WAU.NL> in March and from Graham Russell
<GRUSSELL@srv0.bio.ed.ac.uk> in May). At that time I was more involved
in soil carryover and leaching modeling. Now I would like to find
out more about the state-of-the-art in crop yield prediction.
I am researching this for DowElanco as a possible future research
area. I would be interested in any models or systems that deal with
assessing yields. For example, I have recently seen the paper by
A K L Johnson, et al, in Soil Use and Management (1994) that uses an
expert system to take yields and predict economic return.
Are researchers more involved with building your own yield models for
specific crops, or if not where are you getting your models. There seem
to be many researchers looking at crop specific models to assess the affects
of global climate change or weed stress. Does anyone have plans to hook any
yield models into a GIS (such as Han, et al, 1995) or do Monte Carlo modeling
(Aggarwal, 1995)?
What do you see as the major bottlenecks to advancing yield prediction
in the next 5 or 10 years? And what might be the outcome of this technology
10 years from now?
I apologize for asking so many questions, but I would like to learn more
about this area. Your opinions and any information would be greatly
appreciated.
Perhaps this will stimulate some discussion on the list as opposed to only
SPAM coming across recently :) I'll be happy to summarize and post it
back to the list if anyone would rather email me directly.

To teach my undergraduates the rudiments of crop modelling,
I built a small model of spring barley growth in QBASIC.
The students access the code and run the model for a range
of scenarios by editing the input values. They are then
shown how to edit the code itself and are encouraged to
make modifications to genetic parameters to try to develop
a higher yielding cultivar. I am sure that the secret is
to use a simple model and to lay out the code clearly with
plenty of comments rather than to go for elegant and
efficient programming.
Hope this gives you some ideas.

To anyone that is looking at teaching a crop modeling course,
I would recommend giving Gaylon Campbell and asking for a copy
of his and Claudio Stockles course notes on thier crop modeling
course. Included in the course are quite a few labs in which there
were simple crop models in basic for which the student manipulated
different parameters to understand some of the biophysics behind
the models. I guess that Gaylon and Claudio are in the middle of
putting together a book out of the notes, but I am sure that he would
not mind sending off a copy of the course to interested bystanders
if he has some spare time.
If he doesn't, Let me know and I will try and organize my handouts
and labs into a presentable format. Galon's number is 509-335-1719. I
guess that most should know of him in the crop modeling areas. If not,
Galon is a Professor at Washington State University.
Hope that this is of some help, Let me know if you are not able to
get hold of him and I will do my best to throw together the notes.

Howdy Karl,
I enjoy your questions. Quetzal Computational Associates (the company
I am working for) is currently doing quite a bit is spatial predictions
of crop yields and crop quality. Currently, we accidently ran into a
methodology that quite accurately predicts the state yield and
distributes the yield down to the county/subcounty level. Unfortunately
the methodology is not based on physiological/phenological models
so much at the state level. The physiological/phenological modeling
comes into play while distributing the yield throughout the state.
It is a fairly neet methodology, and fairly accurate so far, just nothing
I would want to publish for fear that the scientific community would
laugh me off the podium when I delivered the presentation.
As I mentioned, I developed the methodology accidently. I have been
working with some commodities/futures people on a project to determine
spatial crop quality over the corn belt. I went to look at how they
did their crop yield predictions, and I started to laugh when I saw
what "magic" numbers they were using. I then had to make some quick
appologies once I saw how well the model performed. There only
one problem with the model results, this is that it did not predict
USDA reports perfectly, which is what they needed. The mass ballence
of grain did work out though, whereas the mass ballence completed
on the USDA has the amount of food eaten by livestock fluctuating
25% from year to year. I am not sure which numbers to beleive, although
the engineer in me is telling me that mass ballence is important, and
the scientist in me is telling me that cows eating habits do not
fluctuate 25% from year to year. A strange feeling when both the
scientist and engineer in me aggree on something. {:-)
You asked one question that really makes me think, that is "What do you
see as the major bottlenecks to advancing yield prediction in the next
5 or 10 years?"
I have been contemplating this for a long time now (years actually)
and think that I there is one bit of agricultural modeling that drives
me up the wall. That is the fear of computers and of learning to use
the right tool for the right job. I will rave on this later.
Other quetstions that you asked about, GIS and models, Specific crop
modeling, state of the art in yield prediction?
I know of many cases in which GIS's are combined with agricultural
modeling to make spatial yield predictions. I think that currently
the spatial modeling is the state of the art in crop modeling. From
here, one just needs to define what scale the predictions are wanted
for. I know of many spatial models that work in the 1 to 10 field
scale. Quetzal has models that predict yield and crop quality over the
entire continental US at a county to subcounty scale. Obviously Quetzal's
models can not be as complicated as the field scale models, since
there is no possible way of obtaining and fine tuning all of the
input parameters necessary for the higher resolution models. Also
when you keep the higher complexity while moving to a lower resolution
you end up introducing a large amount of error which can only be
handelled by taking the model stochastic so that you can interpret
the resulting error and the probability distribution of any given
results. Quetzal's models are, on the other had, quite a bit more
complicated than those that only use satellite derived vegitative
indices (VI) to determine crop yield (something that many have
tried and all have failed, at least that I know of, I have had many
interesting conversations with VI developers about this, and have
not met one that thinks that yield forcasting from satellite imagery
is possible) but we do have to combine many of the soils and local
management trends information into general local parameters.
At our spatial scale, the specific crop models become very simular.
Most of the work at this scale is in data interpolation and management.
The crop models are a shell of phenoological/physiological stages
that are triggered by either daylength, thermal time, or regular
time, dependant on the crop. For example, oil content of soybeans
varies linearly with the ambient temperature durring pod filling.
This problems requires 2 triggers (regular time and daylength)
as well as a tracking of temperature between the triggers to get
an estimate of the soybean oil content. The yield model is a
bit more complicated, as it is dependant on biomass production
and stresses durring the entire growing season.
You may now tune out if you wish, I will be presenting the rave that
I had promissed earlier. I have seen some of the most hairy
complicated GIS compatible models with nasty numerics and all that are
programmed in pascal and can only be run on PC's. Amount of time to
run a calculation....weeks to months. (The same amount of time it
takes to get a complete knowlege of another language) WHY DO THEY DO
THIS!!!! There are multitudes of high power computer resources out
there that are just sitting idol. People are begging me to waste time
on thier super computers because they want to keep them around and not
enough people are using them. All anyone has to do is to learn FORTRAN
or C and maybe a few parrallel languages and you can take the week
to month computations and pull them down to a few minutes. I am not
trying to dog on PASCAL, there are many people out there (and you know
who you are,) that will only program in C or Basic or Fortran or even
spread sheets. I am not saying that any of these are bad if used
propoerly. But if someone has a model in a spread sheet that has
gotten so complicated that it takes 20 or 30 minutes to crunch, and
they are running hundreds of senarios, don't you think there might
be a bit of time saved if a language with better optimization was
used, or if a C program with lots of numerics takes to long on a
PC, maybe port it to fortran and run it on a workstation???

continuing discussions on them. One thing that I would like to know
is what is DowElanco's interest in crop yield predictions. Is there
any specific questions that you have?

other useful suggestions. They have a budget so are not too price sensitive.
I am leaving for Swaziland on Saturday 16th so I would welcome any useful

I am very biased, but the Statistical Analysis System (SAS) is by far the
most comprehensive stats package available (on PC as well). That does not
mean it is the easiest to use.

Dear Karl,
EPIC is the model of choice for crop growth/yields simulation and it
handles many crops in rotation, not just mono-cropping. GIS linkages are
available but limited. We generally use EPIC along side a watershed model
such as SWAT which is built around the GRASS GIS. EPIC is used to model
very detailed fields within the larger watershed. Global climate change
simulation has already been done several years ago using EPIC. A limited
stochastic frontend is also available for EPIC. One of the major
limitations to even better yield simulation is the lack of more detailed
input data. (1.)We use the Soils-5 database with very little regard to
spatial variability or site-specific data and (2.) there is significant
variation between plant varieties. Dr. Jim Kiniry with USDA-ARS in Temple,
TX is the force behind the EPIC crop growth routines
(kiniry@brcsun0.tamu.edu). General info about EPIC (software,

Hi All,
I am a Ph. D student working at the Climatic Research Unit at the University
of East Anglia with P. D. Jones. For my thesis I am studying the impacts of
climate change on wheat through the use of crop climate models.
A major part of my research would be the application of AFRCWHEAT2, EPIC and
CERES-Wheat in France.
I have some experimental data from some sites in central France and I
am working on calibration and validation of CERES to these areas. I have
some questions concerning the way I should work:
a) should the model's genetic coefficient be calibrated in one site and then
applied unchanged to the others or they should be recalibrated for
every site ? Please keep in your mind that my plantings date spanning from
the early of October to eerly of December and the same cultivar is used for
every site the same years.I have been trying to keep all of them constant
and change only the phyllochron which varies a lot but it hasn't worked
so succesfully.
b) Does anyone out there has any information about the wheat cultivar Soissons
which is used in france after 1990 ?
c) The only informations i have about the soils of my sites is the % silt
and their capacity in water (water reserve). For example in one site
my soil contains 40 % silt and it is a water reserve of 75mm H2O. Could
this soil be a deep one or should my choices be limited to only shallow
ones ?
Any response would be greatly appreciated.

Theodoros Mavromatis asked questions about modelling
wheat yield in France.
1. Ideally of course the genetic coefficients should be
constants for a cultivar but they often have an
environmental component and you may have to recalibrate for
each site.
2. You should ask ITCF for information about Soissons which
is a well-known wheat cultivar in northern France and which
is also grown in south-east England.
3. A soil with 40% silt is almost certainly deep. Have a
look at the 1:1000000 soils map of the European Community
and its explanatory memoir.

change you would be in considerable trouble.
So the question boils down to this. If you adjust your parameters by
reason and experimental evidence for each value at each site,
understanding why a parameter should take a new value, then you
may have a chance. If, on the other hand, you adjust your parameters
by a statistical fitting procedure to find the values that happen to
make your model work on a given site with a given set of weather
data then you are wasting your time. - And everyone else's.
In the limit, the logical conclusion from this argument is that
models should not be 'calibrated'. So-called 'calibration' is a way
of coping with incompleteness in the model. Well, it is alright to
have a model that is incomplete. That is what models are about - to
present a reduction from reality and yet maintain sufficient
realism. If your model needs statistical fitting then it is too
incomplete. If parameters can only be evaluated by a statistical
assessment inside the model of how they affect the output, then all
that you are doing is providing a description of your calibration
data.
I was going to send this message directly to Theodoros, and not
'shout' it into everyone's mailbox but, now that I have argued a
position I am more inclined to put it out to everyone to argue over
because I think that the points that I have made are pertinent to

I have to agree with Don MacKerron - if a new site calibration is needed
for the model each time it is not useful for much at all, except to show
how observations differ from predictions. That may be a useful
exercise in itself as a way of testing hypitheses. However, for
assessing the effects of change in climate, such an exercise is a waste
of time. Your hypothesis when starting is "this model provides a
realistic representation of the way a wheat cultivar behaves in
response to its environment". You can then explore the consequences
of that hypothesis. Testing the hypothesis is what validation is about.
CERES, like all wheat models, contains approximations, and some
process descriptions that are empirical. The emprical approximations
particularly may not survive transfer to very different environments.
The overall effects will depend on how vital the process description is
to the performance of the model i.e. model sensitivity.

I was going to recommend the book John Goodenough and I edited for ASAE but
I see someone else beat me to the punch. It is good to know the book is
being used.
As far as models and decision support tools for pest management, you might try:
TEXCIM for Windows--Texas Cotton Insect Model
Sterling, Dean, Hartstack, Shahed, and Burudgunte
Three computer discs plus the users manual may be ordered ($120 outside of
Texas) from TAEX Computer Applications (409 845-3929).
Our group here has developed the WHIMS ((W)Holistic Insect Management
System) cotton insect expert system which has now been released for the Mid
South Area of the U.S. Cottonbelt. Documentation is in process of being
published (any day now). The system with documentation is availble at no
charge for educational purposes. If you are interested in this please
contact Dr. Terry Wagner (601 324-4378). This rulebased expert system
currently handles 12 Mid South Area pests. It can be run standalone or
coupled with the GOSSYM/COMAX cotton crop management system. We are also
testing a combined TEXCIM-WHIMS-GOSSYM/COMAX system.

molecule (pKa approximately 5) in soils with pH of also approximately 5 with
PRZM2. Regardless of the approaches that I take, model predictions while
approximating concentrations relatively well predict the movement of the
material much earlier than measured results indicate.
The questions are:
1. Does PRZM2 handle ionic molecules and if so how?
2. If not, is there a method to correct for the effects of ionization and
soil interactions resulting from those interactions.

I believe PRZMII merely asks for a KD or Koc value, right? It doesn't
allow for pH effects (and you are right in the middle of the pH range
where your compound's mobility would be strongly dependent on pH). I don't
know how accurate the basic theory is (see Rev. Environ. Cont. Tox, 123 (1992))
but, approximately, at pH 5 half of your compound is anionic and half
is unionized; the anionic part would be like bromide and the other half
should have a Koc of approximately 3000/sqrt(solubility at low pH)--probably
much larger.

Don and All,
That brings me to a second question re: Bromide. In water one would imagine
that it to is anionic, does this charge capacity then effect the movement of
that material. I have looked at bromide movement with PRZM2 and compared it
to measured data...the bromide front is way ahead of the measured data but
consistent with, I think, an application rate of 50 lbs/A sandy soil,
rainfall events AND irrigation in very close proximity to the application
date, virtually no dissipation and a kd set to very small numbers.
As per my earlier question on the net are there nuances re bromide PRZM2
modeling that I need to be aware of.

I'm an Ag Engineer, currently enrolled in a M.AppSci at the University of
Queensland - Gatton College. However I work with APSRU (Agricultural
Production Systems Research Unit) which is a joint group of QDPI and CSIRO
based in Toowoomba. (Queensland Dept of Primary Industries & Commonwealth
Scientific and Industrial Research Organization)
Currently looking at effects of soil erosion on changes in soil water and
nitrogen in native pasture grazing systems in Qld.
I'm working within the APSIM (Agricultural Production SIMulator) framework.
Also looking at GRASP (GRASs Production) model.
For Eng proj looked at the ASTC (Australin Soil Temperature - Cereals)
model. Would like to hear from people who have used or are using this model
re accuracy, reliability, improvements, calibrations... May be looking at
it again for improving soil N modelling.

What do you mean by Farland Engineering?
Would it be equivalent to Soil and Water Conservation Engineering (or
would that be a part of it. If so, then the book "Soil and Water
Conservation Engineering" by Glen Schwab et al. (1993, Fourth

Marshall Lamb is an ag economist with Auburn University working at the
National Peanut Research Lab (USDA, ARS) and is developing yield,
quality, price prediction models. He is also deveoping a long-term
whaole farm planning model. It is called PNUTPLN. I'm trying to get
himn hooked up on the internet and using email, and listserv discussion
groups.
We would be interested in further discussions.

Subject: Plug in biological control model
Dear Agmodelers,
I am an organic farmer working with a software person not familiar with
insect modeling programs. We are trying to add a segment to an organic
farming software program that will work as a "plug in" model.
Is this possible or are the variables and fields so different that each
insect group must have its own model? Are there a few standard models used
for predicting and monitoring insect pest and predator populations? What are
the basic parameters used in these models?
I hope these questions are not to elementary for your group. I feel at a
disadvantage as I have been following the agmodels dialog for months and
often do not grasp what is going on.
However, as a farmer I am savey as to the variables use on local farms for
release of benificials (mostly degree days, pest populations and general
time of year). But I know there are probably many more.
Is there a reference that is comprehensive or can you give me a basic
framework?
