Rice Models (m.d.b.young@ncl.ac.uk (Damion Young))

From: m.d.b.young@ncl.ac.uk (Damion Young)
Subject: Rice Models
Dear Agmodellers
In a month's time, I will be running a workshop on crop modelling for a
group of scientists in Tanzania. The main aim of the workshop will be to
familiarise them with user-friendly (Windows) models developed to simulate
sorghum and maize under rainwater harvesting. However, a number of
participants are involved in rice research and I would therefore like to be
able to try and use some of the data they will be bringing in a rice model.
I am aware of the existence of models such as RICEMOD and SAWAH but have
never used them. What I am looking for is a user-friendly, process-based
model of rice production (preferably with a Windows interface) which will
enable both the participants and I to get started within a couple of hours.
I appreciate that it's unlikely that such a model exists outside my dreams
but if you know of anything which even gets close to it, I would be very
grateful for some information.
Thank you in advance,
Damion Young

While I have not used it yet, but plan to do so, you might also look into
RICEWQ. The model developed by Waterborne Environmental Inc. was developed
to evaluate the dissipation and runoff of agrochemicals from aquatic crops.

Subject: Re: Rice Models
Dear Damion,
I work on rice research in Spain. I am finishing my PhD on "rice" modelling at
Wageningen Agricultural University (WAU). In fact, from tomorrow saturday (9/November)
onwards you can reach me at WAU:
david.casanova@staff.tpe.wau.nl
At WAU, there has been a lot of research on rice and modelling. May be you have hear
about the SARP project. Well, as far as I consider, there is NOT a process based model
that in 2 hours you know how to use, helps you to understand rice growing, predict ...,
etc!!.
However, within this SARP project several models have been developed: ORYZA1 (potential
production, only radiation and temperature dependance), ORYZA_N (nitrogen limited,
ORYZA_W (water limited), pest, diseases, .... In any case, those models run under DOS.
They are programmed in what we call a very frienly user shell (FST-Shell), that after
tranlates it to Fortran.
In my personal opinion, I would start with ORYZA1. It is the better tested and developed
model. It was developed by Martin Kropff et al at IRRI in the Philipines. They
calibrated the rice inputs for typical tropical varieties, e.g. IR72. During the last 3
years, I calibrated the rice inputs for European varieties (Tebre, Lido, Senia) and
American (L-202). In any case, it is a very good model, well tested, and with a relative
short time you could:
(1) Introduce daily temperature and radiation of one site and predict if it is possible
to grow rice, what is the potential production of the area, predict LAI developemnt, and
what is going to be the maximum yield!!!.
(2) Understand the rice growing pattern, physiological analysis of field experiments,
etc, estimate the effects of increase CO2 concentration, estimation the effects of
change in N concentration, etc!!!
An important advantage of that model is that it can be used to simulate realistic yields
and to assess the impact of planting date, weather, latitude, leaf N content. This is in
contrast to models for potential production, that have a fixed pattern of leaf
photosynthesis in time. Additionally, there is also a booklet that would help you to
install, familiarize, etc!!!.
Well, sorry for not being able to make all that information shorter. Kind regards,,
David

I don't know if it goes back in time as far as you want, but a reasonable
place to start is the UN/Food & Agriculture Organization's statistical
database:
http://apps.fao.org/lim500/Agri_db.pl
Perhaps you could get in touch with the FAOSTAT managers - they might have
more data available than what they show in their website.
Good luck

Pablo,
You could check with the Worldwatch Institute, in Washington DC. They
do a good job at researching these issues. They publish their database on
disk with trends from the mid century onward. They may give you their
sources from which you may obtain data for before 1950. Their address is
wwpub@worldwatch.org (they may also have a web page).

So now comes Howard Clyma who tries to tell us the RIGHT way to
get off this list.
And I appreciate the fact that he is TRYING.
But notice that there is not, anywhere that *I* can find, any
mention of WHERE to put these "messages" or "requests."
In the SUBJECT? In the BODY??
Is it unacceptable to put anything ELSE in the Body???
Is it unacceptable to have something in both the Subject
and the Body????
It ought to be FAR EASIER to get OFF one of these things than
to get shoved ONTO one.
And most of them ARE fairly easy to get out of... I had to
get out of a hundred when I got spammed onto a bunch, but this
one is proving to be quite refractory.
I suggest you get better maillist software.
The truth is out there.
I am hereby following the instructions he gave:

Let's see... nothing ever worked before.
But his instructions claim that that will get me

You are welcome to peruse our WWW page.
http://www.bsyse.wsu.edu/cropsyst
It discusses the CropSyst: Cropping System Simulation Model.
You can also obtain the CropSyst software from this page.
There is also a link (under "Other Agricultural models') to the

Well GUESS WHAT, Mr. Howard Clyma, the stinkin ListServ

It is FAR TOO DIFFICULT to get off this $#%^$^& thing.
And I am not going to shut up about it just because

My plight is not one of my own making, and I am
astounded by the heartlessness of his response.
I did not ever in my life subscribe to this list.
I am being subjected to this shit through no fault
of my own.
For six months I have, from time to time, politely
mentioned the problem. Now I get bitched at for
bringing it up.
May be the only way to get off this fuckin thing is
to get *KICKED* off. Will that work?
I have tried everything else.

I agree it should not be that difficult to signoff a listserv.
I don't know it is possible to subscribe someone to a list,
although I have heard that it is possible and that some
idiots are doing this.
Many lists require a verification before permission to join is
granted. agmodels-l is not one of them.
Please, let us know exactly what you have done and what the
results were. I, for one, do not want to trap anyone on a
list who does not want to be there. We come together voluntarily.
If I am correct in understanding what you have done and still could
not get off, I, and I hope others, will be willing to complain
to the listserv to correct your problem and any such future
occurrences.
Much luck, and please be very specific as to what you have
done, so we can be certain that it is a system problem.

Subject: Beta-testers needed
Beta-testers are needed to test a beta version of Graphic User Interface for Crop Simulators
(GUICS). GUICS is a WindowsTM interface that runs under Windows 95.
GUICS can support many crop models simultaneously. Visual access to all information is
facilitated. GUICS displays the results in graphic, tabular, and text forms.
The description of the GUICS concept is attached below.
Those who are interested should send E-mail to Yakov Pachepsky using E-mail address
ypachepsky@asrr.arsusda.gov
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The concept of GUICS
GUICS is a Windows 95 interface to run crop simulators. There are many crop simulators available
nowadays. Despite all the differences between them, they have common features that have enabled
us to develop this interface.
The hierarchy of information units in GUICS is based on the fact that one run of any crop
simulator makes predictions for a particular combination of weather, soil, crop cultivar, and
farm operations. Such a combination is referred as a scenario. Data on weather, on soil, on
weed control, etc., are referred to as datasets of a scenario. Several related scenarios may be
combined in a group that is called a project. Any scenario belongs to some project. Similar
datasets, e.g. weather data, belong to the same data category.
GUICS runs a crop simulator after arranging the input data for one or for several scenarios
according to the users request. GUICS displays the results in graphic, tabular, and text forms.
If several scenarios are of interest, the tables and graphs will display results of all
scenarios simultaneously to facilitate a comparison of results. Several ways to visualize the
results are available. A toolbar is included to simplify viewing results.
Copying, deleting, and editing functions are available at all levels of the
project-scenario-dataset hierarchy. Several additional functions are specific to a particular
level of the hierarchy. At the scenario level, a user can vary the scenario, i.e., generate a
set of scenarios differing in one dataset only. At the dataset level, calling a weather station
to update the current weather dataset will eventually be possible.
Each information unit (a project, a scenario, a dataset) has a name, and may have an icon and a
memo. An icon is meant to simplify recognizing a unit or to symbolize essential features of a
unit. A memo is a text description of a unit.
The interface has a set of wizards to guide a user through all stages of project development,
scenario assembly, viewing results, and editing datasets.
On-line help and a guided tour will be eventually included.
GUICS interacts with a crop simulator as with a stand-alone code. Scripts have to be written to
plug a simulator into GUICS. The scripts describe the structure of input and output datasets
specific to a particular simulator. Authors may want to modify the output of their simulators to
take advantage of the capabilities of GUICS in viewing results.
There is no standard in datasets for crop simulations. GUICS allows different simulators to have
different datasets for the same data category, for example different soil files for the same
field.
GUICS has a fully object oriented design and implementation. It is open to enhancements and
further development, e.g., using maps, displaying animation, using data bases to store datasets,
etc.

Subject: Rice models
Damion
I am back now from Tanzania, and can reply to your request about rice
models. The ones that I am aware of are
as follows, although it might not be exhaustive:
ORYZA family of models (ORYZA1, ORYZA_W, ORYZA_N): These are all developed
by the Dutch modelling
group at Wageningen and are based on the SUCROS and MACROS models, and
have been described in the
response you had from David Casanova. They are written in Fortran in the
FSE (Fortran Simulation Environment)
system developed at Wageningen, so if you are familar with that they are
relatively easy to use. Versions also
exist in the FST system recently developed at Wageningen. There is also a
"user-friendly" shell (the SARP-shell)
written in FoxPro that is available to run the models with, which provides
various options in pull-down menus, etc. I
am not sure what the exact status of that is at the moment - originally is
was a DOS based application, but there
were plans to convert it to Windows, but you could probably find this out
from David Casanova.
CERES-Rice: This is part of the IBSNAT/DSSAT line-up of models, and uses
many components from the other
CERES models, although there are bits that are specific to rice, such as
that describing the chemistry of puddled
soils, etc. It can be run through the DSSAT shell, which makes it
considerably easier to use than as a
stand-alone program, but you need to have the whole system installed,
which can be quite bulky. You will also
need to become familiar with the DSSAT I/O formats, but these are well
documented. You can get the DSSAT
software from: IBSNAT, Department of Agronomy and Soil Science, University
of Hawaii, 2500 Dole Street, Krauss
Hall 22, Honolulu, HI 96822, USA, if you don't already have it.
SIMRIW: This is a potential production model developed by Professor T
Horie at Kyoto University, Japan, and is
quite simple and easy to use. He was working on including the effects of
N, but I am not sure what status that is
at the moment. The original was written in BASIC, but he has also
converted it to Fortran (to be compatible with
the Wageningen FSE system). As far as I am aware, there is no shell to go
with it, but you can specify various
options within the model by answering a series of questions that appear on
the screen in DOS mode. You could
contact Professor Horie at Faculty of Agriculture, Kyoto University, Kyoto
606, Japan.
TRYM: This is a model developed by Rob Williams in Australia, which again
is quite simple, but seems to work
well for Australian conditions, and also reasonably well for the
Philippines when it was tested using data from
IRRI., although I believe some adjustments were necessary! I don't know
how it would work for other conditions. It
does include the effects of N and has a nice user interface that makes it
easy to use. I don't have a contact
address, but there might be others in the AGMODELS group that do.
RICESYS: This was developed by Graf et al in Switzerland (see Agricultural
Systems 32:341-365; 1990) and is
different in that a demographic approach is taken to describe tiller
development etc. It was written to describe
crop-pest interactions. Again, I don't know whether it has been developed
since, but it is written in Fortran 77, and
the version that I have seen wasn't all that easy to use (i.e. no
interface).
I assume that the RICEMOD model that you mentioned was the one developed
by McMennamy & O' Toole in
1983 - it is a bit dated now, and as far as I remember, it was very
specific to IRRI conditions (crop development
was a function of days, not thermal time, etc.). I don't think it has been
worked on since then, but I stand to be
corrected. I wouldn't think that this one is very suitable. SAWAH is
another one from the Wageningen stable, and
is very detailed, but I haven't used it. Again you could probably find out
more about it from David Casanova or
others there.
Hope this information is of use to you.

Yakov, count me in as a beta tester.
To all on the AG-MODELS list, Marie Fortin and I have proposed that there be
a symposium at the next American Society of Agronomy meetings (Anaheim, Oct.
26 to 31, 1997) on "Frameworks for modeling and decision support systems:
organization of data, models, and the user interface". A number of groups
are in a position now to provide powerful software environments for modeling
crops and creating decision support systems. My hope is that we can review
the various options available, like the GUICS, so that those developing
software can consider adopting and building on one of the frameworks.

I'm not sure yet. In communicating with John Sadler (the program
representative from ASA Division A-3), we recommended a series of oral
presentations, a panel discussion with extended question/answer, and a
software demonstration session. I'll get an update from John and get back to
you personally.

In fact, I SHOWED what I was doing, by sending the request to
the agmodels-l@unl.edu in addition to the listserv@unl.edu.
What you saw was what the listserv replied.
It did that, I believe, because I had sent my request
during a reply to another message, so that my complete
message began with
>Ray .....
Now, as you said above, I *DID* put the correct request
in the body. But, since no one (including you) ever said
that it must be the FIRST (or maybe ONLY???) line in the
message, I put it several lines down, during my rant.
This does not work. At the time, I did not even know
that it had to be in the BODY at all, I thought it possible
that the Subject was the correct location.
Now I know WHERE to put it, and I am guessing that it will
work if I put the request at the TOP of my message, and do
not put anything ELSE in my message.
Now I have to try all combinations of Subject (blank,
"none", "unsubscribe," etc.), and I have to try it with
and without a carriage return or line feed after the
Request... but I now think I will probably be able to
be gone in a few days or weeks.
The bad news is, you won't have Larry to kick around any
more, and you'll have to get back to productive work. :-)
Thanks for the civilized reply.

AGMODELS-L Discussion Group
My name is Phil Loretan at the George Washington Carver Agricultural
Experiment Station at Tuskegee University, Tuskegee, AL 36088. I am the
coordinator of our NASA Center here at TU which is presently titled: Center
for Food Production, Processing and Waste Management for Controlled
Ecological Life Support Systems. After January 1st, the name will change
to: Center for Food and Environmental Systems for Human Exploration of
Space (CFESH). We work primarily with sweetpotatoes and peanuts in
controlled environment hydroponics trying to ascertain the optimum
environmental conditions for growth and yield of these crops in preparation
for growing them as a food source on long term space missions. As an
integral part of this effort, we are working to develop and validate a
sweetpotato model for controlled environments as well as to adapt a peanut
model which was developed for field conditions to controlled environment
hydroponics. We would welcome suggestions on either or both of these
topics. We are also looking for a postdoctoral/research associate to
assist us in this challenging research. Anyone interested in applying for
a position on our team can E-Mail me or contact me at: (Tel) 334-727-8129
or (Fax) 334-724-4451.

Dear Agmodelers,
Please pardon my lack of attention to the mad raver,
Larry Pendarvis. I have removed him from the list. I would prefer
those who are having trouble unsubscribing from the list to send
me a private email with the SUBJECT: Trouble unsubscribing from
AGMODELS-L and include your full name and the address from which
you subscribed. Many people get stuck on the list due to the
wonderful world of mail routers which strip out the computer host
name and this confounds the heck out of the very literal minded
listserver software. Can't someone write a fuzzy logic listserver
which can take care of such trivialities?
Once again I apologize for not paying closer attention to
this very offensive person who clearly disturbed many of you. He
certainly got our attention didn't he *grin*.
