The Agricultural Research Service , U.S. Department of Agriculture, is
seeking an agricultural economist with a strong background in sustainable
agriculture and precision farming. The Beltsville Agricultural Research
Center (BARC) is extensively involved in research on sustainable agriculture
and precision farming and currently has several new and on-going field
research and demonstration projects. The individual will be working with
two other economists and a multi- disciplinary team of scientists at BARC to
analyze profitability of sustainable agricultural and precision farming
systems and the trade-offs between economic returns and the environmental
quality.
This is a full-time post-doctoral research associate position at the GS-11
level with a starting salary of $38,330 plus fringe benefits. The initial
appointment is two years, renewable for another two years depending upon
satisfactory performance and availability of funds.
Qualifications include (1) a Ph.D. degree in agricultural economics with
experience or major course work in resource economics and
agriculture-related fields; (2) knowledge of sustainable agriculture and, if
possible, precision farming; (3) strong computer skills in programming and
simulation such as economic and crop simulation models; and (4) good
quantitative skills such as multiobjective programming, linear programming,
optimization theory, etc. In addition, general understanding of
agricultural sciences and knowledge about the relevant issues and problems
associated with animal waste management, especially on dairy waste
management are desirable. U.S. citizenship is required. USDA is an equal
opportunity employer.
The position will be open until filled. Interested individuals may send a
resume along with a cover letter describing research experience and computer
skills and how they meet the position requirements to me by mail, fax, or
email at the address below. Please pass along this announcement to anyone
who might be interested in this position. .

interest in learning about agric. models. I was my thought that by
subscripting I could learn how to develop agric models, methods and

subject to use to learn methods in developing models. I suggest you contact

Isn't everyone fed up with the 'remove me from this list' stuff.
Anyway I have a serious question again for the ag world:
I am looking for Mucuna(velvet bean) data (Biomass time series, LAI, SLA) in order to develop a model (Cropgro-DSSAT) for it.
Your information concerning this is very welcome!
Looking forward to the favor of your reply,

Subject: Clean-up of listserv.
Dear Colleagues,
I'll be cleaning up the AgModels-L mailing list, for my own sanity: with
every contribution to the list, I get a pile of error messages, primarily
from out-of-date E-mail addresses.
There is a chance that I may accidently interpret your address as
out-of-date. This, I think, will only occur when (a) your mail server is
down and will not properly receive your mail, and (b) I don't recognize your
name as a "likely" modeler. If you have ".edu" or ".gov" in your address,
you will be safe until I can confirm the mail problems. If your address has
a commercial name, I will be more likely to delete the address in case of
undeliverable mail. An acknowledgment of the removal will be mailed in any case.
If you have trouble with the AgModels-L list, feel free to E-mail me
directly, and I will automatically take care of any list-management issues
that accidently get mailed to everyone.

Subject: New Simulation model for grass growth and nitrogen cycling
Apologies for cross posting.
A new dynamic simulation model, SIGNIWA, for grass growth, nitrogen, water
and phosphorous cycling in the monoculture and mixture of grass & legume
will be released.
The current version mainly focuses on the first two parts, grass growth
and nitrogen cycling on the field scale. The processes include
photosynthesis, respiration, the allocation of net photosynthesis to leaf,
stem and root, leaf death, digestibility which will determine cutting
dates and times in a year, decomposition of organic matter, slurry
application, mineralization, immobilization, nitrification,
denitrification, leaching, plant uptake of notrogen and N fixation.
If you are interested in and would like to recieve this model, please

Dear Ag-modelers
We are looking to carry out a monte-carlo simulation as part of a sensitivity
analysis of a runoff and erosion model. In order to do this we need statistical
distributions for the vegetation (and other) parameters in the model.
Does anyone have typical values for the mean and standard deviation of the
following parameters for maize at maturity?
Maximum interception storage (mm)
Percentage basal area (%)
Percentage canopy cover (%)
Angle of plant stems (deg)
Effective canopy height (m)

Subject: New Subscriber
Dear colleagues,
as a new subscriber, I'm asked to provide some basic information on my
interests etc:
I'm a Postdoctoral Research Associate, working on the analysis and simulation
of the N-turnover in arable soils under different management practices. Since
1991, I've mainly worked on the spatial and temporal variation of nitrate
contents and on the estimation of net nitrogen mineralization in situ. This
work is part of the longterm research project FAM (Munich Research
Association for Agricultural Ecosystems). The aim of FAM is to develop
strategies for sustainable and ecologically compatible farming.
Process-oriented modelling is regarded as a tool to achieve this aim.
Therefore, the modular program package Expert-N is used for the simulation of
the nitrogen dynamics in the arable soils of our experimental station.

Subject: Joint problems?
Dear colleagues,
I try to find out, where researchers have to cope with similar problems as I
have to. Therefore, I would like to get notice about projects where
process-oriented simulation of the nitrogen dynamics in arable soils is used
as a means to derive recommendations for sustainable N management practices.
I would like to discuss practical approaches for the initialization (e.g.
different SOM pools, soil hydraulical properties) of process-oriented
soil-crop-atmosphere models (e.g. LEACHN) when simulations have to be done
for a great number of differently managed sites.
I'm especially keen to get notice of studies
a) on the farm/landscape section level
b) with diverse crop rotations (cereals, potatoes, corn, sunflowers, lupines,
clover, cover crops....)
c) with different management types (organic <-> conventional)
The background of this inquiry is, that I intend to come to the US in October
to participate in the ASA-CSSA-SSSA Annual Meetings. Before or after this
meeting, I would like to visit a research group for detailed discussion of
joint problems.
Yours sincerely,
Roland

Dear Dr. Roland Stenger,
I have managed diferent farming operations in the the past. I support your
vision fo the need for a models for N management systems. Farms in this
area are primarly corn and soybeans and confined hog operations. I have
noticed some livestock operations seem to to have less dependance on
external sources of N. The pourty operations is the one that stands out to
me the most. thanks for your comments.

Subject: Cellular Automata
Dear All
I have been developing cellular automata models to investigate the
dynamics of plant diseases. One of the problems I have faced is the
difficulty in validating spatial models, not only deciding upon
appropriate statistical techniques but also choosing efficient and
effective methods of collecting suitable validation data.
I'm sure I am not alone with these problems. I would appreciate hearing
from anybody who has any experience or ideas but preferably solutions !
Many thanks.
Derek

Agri-modelers, can you help this person?
**6. GARDENING SOFTWARE - OAKLAND PRESS (Pontiac, MI). I am
looking for review copies of gardening programs for an up-coming
computer column. Also, I am looking for anyone who has consulted
on a gardening software program who might have some advice on how
reliable the programs are, or folks who specialize in gardening
topics who might have advice on how to pick out a program. Need
leads by Tuesday, May 27. >>> Jeff Green E-mail:

**19. ARTHROPOD EXPERTS - ANIMAL PLANET. I am searching for
arthropod experts whose field methods are exciting or unusual. For
example, I'm looking to interview a scorpion expert who could take
us into the field to find scorpions in the wild or spider experts
who milk spiders for their venom. These experts will appear in my
one-hour special on arthropods for the Discovery Channel. >>>
