Hi Folks:
My name is Peter Singfield and I am a medical practitioner here in Belize,
Central America. I use quite a lot of alternate medical treatments and am
quite successful in my practice. Though I have some great medicines for
malaria from natural sources I do not have enough to meet the present ever
increasing spiral of infection rates.
In my investigations for very effective alternatives for malaria treatment I
have been studying Artemisinin. I am convinced that it is the answer to our
problems here.
I need to know more about the plant it is derived from. How to acquire
seeds, what kind of environment is required to propagate. How long to
maturity -- and all the rest in that line of interest. I need to make a
model of how to cultivate large amounts as soon as possible.
I am totally in the dark regarding this -- even to acquiring seed. I know
that they are successfully cultivating this plant in Africa for anti-malaria
medication. The plant is originally from the Vietnam/China area. I feel it
should grow well here in Belize.
I believe that demand for this plant will sky-rocket in the next year!!
I am including here a short description. Can anyone please guide me further
on this??

Artemisinin is a new antimalarial drug of Chinese-Vietnamese origin,
derived from the herb Artemisia annua L., locally known as "qing hao" '
sweet wormwood or annual wormwood, and belonging to the family of
Asteraccae.
This plant has been used for many centuries in Chinese traditional medicine
as a treatment for fever and malaria.
The earliest record of the medicinal use of "qing hao" was found in a
recipe discovered in a tomb dating from 168 B.C. (Qinghaosu Antimalaria
Coordinating Research Group, 1979; Klayman, 1985).
Chinese chemists isolated the substance responsible for its medicinal
action from the leafy portions of A. annua L. in 1972. They named the
crystalline compound "qinghaosu". In the West it was called artemisinin
(Klayman, 1985).

I am a farmer/consultant in eastern Nebraska, USA, and grew Artemisia a.
one season on a very small scale. The seed came from Companion Plants,
7247 North Carolina Ridge Road, Athens, Ohio 45701, USA. We started it
in flats (the seed is very small), and transplanted it after frost. It
grew well here with no particular difficulty. It is occasionally
planted in the US as an ornamental. I was interested in the antifungal
properties of the hexane extract.
Probably not much more I could tell you. Companion Plants may be able to
guide you as to its culture. Good luck.

Your are a breath of fresh air for us here. We were totally in the blind
regarding the plant and it's cultivation and now we have the truly valuable
information you have kindly just supplied. I am going to copy your message
out to the small group of six here that are all interested in experimenting
small scale.
Of great value is the information you supply regarding the source for seeds.
I have just lately become aware that Artemisia a. has antifungal properties
as well as anti-malarial. Did you experiment with this??

CSIRO Tropical Agriculture is a partner in the Co-operative Research
Centre (CRC) for Sustainable Sugar Production, established in 1995 to
foster an internationally competitive and environmentally sustainable
Australian sugar industry. A diverse range of activities has commenced
aimed at defining and minimising environmental impacts, sustaining soil
resources in the long-term, and raising productivity and profitability at
both the farm and mill scales. Simulation models are used as part of this
research to relate crop and soil management and climate to crop
productivity, soil quality and losses of water, nutrients and pesticides
to the wider environment. Central to the approach is the cropping systems
simulator, APSIM, a product of the joint CSIRO/DPI/DNR Agricultural
Production Systems Research Unit, with staff located in Toowoomba and
Brisbane, Qld.
The Division and the CRC are seeking to appoint a crop and soil modeller
to further develop APSIM modules relevant to the sugar production system
and to support their use in a wide range of problem situations in the
Australian sugar industry. The position is based in Townsville, but the
appointee will travel widely to work with APSRU and CRC staff located
throughout the Australian sugar industry.
The crop-soil modeller will have a Ph D or equivalent research experience
in crop or soil science and be able to demonstrate skills in bio-physical
modelling. You must also have excellent communication and interpersonal
skills to be effective in operating in a dynamic team environment with
considerable interaction with industry and a diverse range of research
organisations. Skills in training and support of others in model
application would be an advantage.

The position is joint between Colorado State University and the USDA, ARS,
Great Plains Systems Research Unit, in Fort Collins, Colorado. The
position description is as follows:
Postdoctoral Scientist-Crop Simulation Modeling
Full-time position available 1 October 1997 to assist a multidisciplinary
group in developing a crop simulation model that integrates phenology,
development, and physiology for wheat and corn under conditions of
environmental stress (particularly water, N, and temperature) and different
soil tillage practices. The development of phenology, development, and
physiology submodels, the coupling of these submodels with detailed soil
and atmospheric submodels, and the creation of a user-friendly interface
under an existing modular framework are the key components of the work.
Applicant should have demonstrated research ability and training in crop
science, crop modeling, interface development, C++ and Fortran 90
programming languages, and object-oriented design. Position is for 2
years, salary commensurate with experience and skills. To apply, submit

Responsibilities: The incumbent will work with a team of scientists

A position is open for a Crop Simulation Modeling Postdoctoral Scientist.
The position is joint between Colorado State University and the USDA, ARS,
Great Plains Systems Research Unit, in Fort Collins, Colorado. The
position description is as follows:
Postdoctoral Scientist-Crop Simulation Modeling
Full-time position available 1 October 1997 to assist a multidisciplinary
group in developing a crop simulation model that integrates phenology,
development, and physiology for wheat and corn under conditions of
environmental stress (particularly water, N, and temperature) and different
soil tillage practices. The development of phenology, development, and
physiology submodels, the coupling of these submodels with detailed soil
and atmospheric submodels, and the creation of a user-friendly interface
under an existing modular framework are the key components of the work.
Applicant should have demonstrated research ability and training in crop
science, crop modeling, interface development, C++ and Fortran 90
programming languages, and object-oriented design. Position is for 2
years, salary commensurate with experience and skills. To apply, submit

Subject: Agricultural Beaurocracy
I am interested in developing a model for use by farmers to maximise
their income from grants, premium payments and other paper-pushing
sources. This is because the potential incomes are large, and the
penalties for getting the paperwork wrong are also quite large. Does
anyone know of anyone doing this kind of work? I am interested in the
EU/British situation, but contacts abroad would still be useful.

It is arriving at the usable stage for NRCS field offices and farmers.
If you like it, please advertise this site.
Also for each state, we are both including the CARE budgets developed at Blacklands,
AND all other available budgets.
If you or others in your state have budgets that your would like to include for wider distribution,
please pass the html address (if already on the WEB) or the budgets (if CARE, spreadsheets,
or other electronic form) to me or to the WEB master, Steve Dagitz (dagitz@brcsun0.tamu.edu) .
I have looked for, but seen no other WEB site collecting crop budgets for all states.
This site fills a practical and a research need for base crop budgets.
The Blacklands budgets are created for national and regional level research, and are
under review and revision. Please pass any comments (or complaints) directly back
to the developers. They provide CARE budgets (paired with EPIC runs) for most crops
by tillage system for the 63 regions in the national Ag. Sector Model.
These CARE base budgets can be modified to meet local, and even field specific conditions.
CARE is a free NRCS crop budget program usable by field offices and individual farmers.
We will try to maintain links to other crop budget provided to us, under the fifty state headings.
We hope that users will be able to find enough budget information for each state,
from whatever source, to fill your needs.

Hello AGMODELS-L discussion group members. I am a new
subscriber introducing myself. My name is Dean Barry and I work
in the Department of Land Resource Science at the University of
Guelph, Guelph, Ontario, Canada. I am helping in the
development of a farming systems model that includes
environmental, economic, and social aspects both on- and off-
farm. It is part of the farming systems research program at the
Univ. of Guelph (http://tdg.uoguelph.ca/FSR/homepage.html).
I am mainly interested in determining the communications,
linkages and transformations among biophysical and socio-
economic components of a farming system. System components so
far include CROPSIM, DAFOSYM, MCLONE, Process Optimization
(Michigan State). We still need environmental impacts models
and human resources and social models. Also would like input on
choosing indicators.
