What are you doing these days? Last I heard you were farming in
Belize. I spent 3 weeks in Honduras in '89 for Dole (Standard Fruit) on
their water infiltration problems. 8,000 acres of contiguous bananas;
that's a lot of bananas!
I'm scaling back my practice; just "pickin' a few plumbs" now!

source, and to reduce water salination from 4000 ppm to a maximum of 500
ppm, and produce about 400 cubic meter/hour of water suitable for
irrigation.
My problem is to find this system with a cost which do not exeed:
5000 US$.

You have pinpointed the problem; cost! You might have to consider a
higher salinity that would be suited for those that have a higher
salinity threshold. Do you have better quality water nearby that could
be pumped and blended with your high EC water? Dr. Manual Epstein,
Univ. of Calif., Davis (my alma mater) developed barley varieties that
would grow with sea water! He is Emeritous now, but still likes to stay
in contact with his colleagues and their challenges.

The salinity levels in the surface water are not much of an "issue"
right now, mainly because they have not been documented. I would say
that salinity in any area along the South Platte River is not an issue
per say. It's somewhat political. We have the Colorado River which
has problems stemming from Mancos Shale salt contributions. But
contrary to popular belief, the Colorado is not the worst river in the
state where salinity is concerned, it is the Arkansas. So most of the
attention is focuses on these two rivers.
For now, salts are building up on soils in the eastern reaches of the
South Platte - an area with few people and very little political clout.
Agriculture is suffering in this eastern portion.
I have not found extremely high salt loads in the surface water,
infact, there may be a point along the stream where the load is lessening
(meaning that it is staying on the field). There does seem to be a
problem with groundwater. Unfortunately, agriculture here also depends
on pumping wells to water crops. So you are right, the main problem is
the soil salinity, but I also believe the problems would not be so bad
if the salts stayed in the soils further upstream.
So what are you thinking of doing in Madison? Will you collect your
own data or will you use some other sources? What are your plans? I
am still in what feels like the beginning of my research - swamped with
data and I am not sure exactly where to go. I will be turning out
results of my synthesis, but what do I suggest we do. Part of the
answer will come when I see the results, but the other part with have
to do with which side I'm on. Do I just focus on getting the salts out
of the soil and who cares about the carriers?
What do you suggest?

Does anyone have an e-mail address for the NIAB in Faisalabad, Pakistan.
The address I was given (niab.fsb.eurm.com.pk) does not work.
Dr Shafqat Farooq there has developed some very promising lines from
Aegilops cylindrica backcrossed to local wheat cultivars. These are in field
trials this season (they should have been harvested by now) and as well as
tolerance to salinity are also reputed to be tolerant to a range of other
stresses. I'll give more information when I have it.

Many thanks for the help with the NIAB address - erum rather than eurm
seems to have worked OK.
The NIAB that Grover Partee found is the UK National Institute of
Agricultural Botany, our variety and seed testing organisation. NIAB in
Pakistan is the Nuclear Institute for Agriculture and Biology, with a remit,
inter alia, for plant breeding through radiation-induced mutations.
