Subject: Re: Introduction
Scott,
I am a PhD student in the CRC for Catchment Hydrology, based at
Monash Uni in Melbourne. I am studying salt export and runoff
processes in shallow saline watertable regions. My project is examining
a flood irrigation bay in the Kerang region in Northern Victoria
(barr creek and all that jazz). Most of my work is field work based
and I have tried to instrument fairly comprehensively, a single field.
There are 10 shallow piezos, tensiometers, 'soil moisture corp' soil
salinity sensors, soil moisture probes, as well as surface water
measurements of in/outputs of water and salt....etc etc.... This season
will be the end of the fieldwork, before writing up next year.
I am interested in your comment on EC 1:5 vs ECe conversion factors.
(assuming that "e" means a direct soil water extract)
Can you point me in the direction of any literature on the
limitations/relationships between the two. I have tried briefly to
compare my EC1:5 data with the ceramic soil
sensor EC data. This didn't work out well. I imagine it is a little
more complex than just adjusting 1:5 data to account for soil
moisture. I would appreciate any comments you have on the ease/futility of the
relationship.

Mat Gilfedder

Re: Introduction ("J.D. Oster" <oster@mail.ucr.edu>)
Date: Mon, 2 Dec 1996 10:59:55 -0600
From: "J.D. Oster" <oster@mail.ucr.edu>
Subject: Re: Introduction
Mat: The effects of soil water content on EC is not straight forward. There
are mineral equilibria -- calcite for calcareous soils for example ---, and
cation exchange equilibria which affect the composition of the soil solution
which in turn can affect the EC. The mineral equilibria which involves
correction for precipitation of calcite as the soil solution is concentrated
-- or the EC1:5 is converted to EC of the solution obtained in the extractor
-- can have a larger impact that exchange equilibria. However, the two
together work to cause more calcite precipitation -- as the solution is
concentrated sodium replaces calcium on the exchange phase. The calcium in
turn would tend to precipitate with bicarbonate in the form of calcite. So
if the soil is calcareous, there will be a problem. One can model these
equilibria on a computer -- but the programs that did that in the early 70's
is no longer functioning. I have the code, but do not have a compiled
program! See Oster and McNeal, SSSAJ 35:436. 1971.
The other problem you will have is with spatial variability of salinity.
Salinity can vary greatly: in distances of 10 - 20 feet the coefficient of
variation can be 50 % or higher. At 05:52 PM 12/1/96 -0600, you wrote:

Subject: C.I.I. 1997 Meeting Announcement
The California Irrigation Institute would like to invite interested
individuals to partake in the upcoming 1997 C.I.I. meeting. If you are
interested in the management, technical or public policy perspective of
irrigation, the California Irrigation Institute's next meeting on January
28th and 29th, should be of interest.
The upcoming meeting will host speakers of regional and international
prominence. Sessions will include: Computers in Water Management,
Irrigation Management:Response to Water Costs and Availability, Irrigation
District Modernization, Making Irrigation Systems Pay, Electric Power
Deregulation, Agricultural Drainage, and an extensive section covering
Crop Response to Water.
California is internationally known for its water delivery systems and
ongoing quest to balance urban, industrial and agricultural water
interests. This meeting is for all individuals willing to obtain insight
into the future of water in California and other similar regions.
The 1997 C.I.I. Meeting will be in Fresno, California at the Holiday
Inn-Centre Plaza. Fresno is within 90 minutes of three national parks. For

With more time one would like very much to participate in the January
meeting. Reality is there is no time.
I would appreciate a chance to see the programme and if there are
abstracts or papers it would be useful

Dear Mr. Conway and others interested in the C.I.I. meeting in January.
The meeting will NOT have abstracts or papers, but I will do my best
to do a mini-report on what was covered at the meeting including digital
photographs.
I will post the report here on Salinity-L and on my web page
(http://www.cybergate.com/~rmead)
Hope this satisfies everyone who can not participate.

Courtesy of the Rivernet Bulletin Board, I am reposting an announcement
about grants in support of GIS work, targetted to non-governmental
organizations. I have forwarded to some of you in government because you
may have ouitside contacts with a need to know. Here it is:
Hi there:
We have received over 600 inquiries to the Conservation Technology Support
Program RFP that we issued about 6 weeks ago. With the application postmark
date approaching quickly (January 17, 1997), we want to be sure that no one
misses the opportunithy to find out about CTSP.

CONSERVATION TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT PROGRAM
REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS
The Conservation Technology Support Program is pleased to announce
its geographic information system granting program for 1997.
The Conservation Technology Support Program (CTSP) is a granting
program established in 1994 designed to provide hardware,
software, and training to nonprofit organizations addressing
environmental and conservation issues so that they can undertake a
variety of projects using a geographic information system (GIS).
1997 is the third year of the Conservation Technology Support
Program. In the previous two years, in-kind grants of hardware,
software and training valued at more than $2 million have been
awarded to approximately 85 organizations.
The primary intention of this year's program, as in the past, is
to provide a comprehensive package of GIS support to organizations
that can demonstrate the need to apply appropriate GIS methods to
accomplish their objectives, but lack the tools to do so.
In 1997, CTSP is particularly interested in supporting
organizations that use GIS as a strategic tool to effectively
communicate spatial concepts to engage constituencies or
communities in resource conservation or environmental protection.
The CTSP is a partnership between Hewlett-Packard Company; Apple
Computer, Inc.; the Environmental Systems Research Institute
(ESRI), publishers of GIS software; the Smithsonian Institution's
National Zoological Park Conservation and Research Center (CRC);
and the Conservation GIS Consortium (CGISC), a national
association of nonprofits that provide technical support to
conservation and environmental nonprofits in the use of GIS.
Under the partnership, Hewlett-Packard and Apple donate computers,
peripherals and software; ESRI contributes software and training;
and CRC and CGISC provide specialized GIS training. No cash grants
are made. CGISC is the coordinating institution for this effort.
Additional hardware and software is provided on an "as available"
basis under a Co-Sponsor Program by Trimble Navigation, GTCO
Corporation, Iomega Corporation, ERDAS Incorporated, and Microsoft
Corporation. These donations enable a smaller number of grantees
to acquire global positioning system (GPS) units, digitizing
tablets, multidisk storage devices, image processing software, and
data management software.
The CTSP program is open to all U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit
organizations active in conserving, protecting or restoring our
natural environment. The application deadline is January 17, 1997.
If you would like to receive information about applying for a CTSP
grant, please send an email message to ctsp@desktop.org or visit
