I did my MS from Karachi and Ph.D. from Athens, Ohio, USA. I am a Professor of Ecology at University of Karachi. Currently visiting BYU as an adjunct Professor and looking for a suitable position. - Why you are interested in salinity-l Physiological ecology of halophytes are my major interest. I am trying to understand dormancy mechanisms as well growth and osmoregulation of halophytes in saline conditions. A large portion of the world's agricultural area is saline and rapidly becoming saline. I am trying to understand ecology and physiology of halophytes to be able to use them as crop. - What your experience with salinity problems are Most of my experience is working in a hot dry arid environment with less then 220 mm of rainfall with large saline patches with plenty of shrybby halophytes. I am just wondring that if they can be used for reclame degraded saline ecosytems. - Your specific questions or topics that you would like to see discussed Physiological ecology of halophytes and mangroves Use of halophytes as agricultre crop or a tool of bioremediation of saline soil. - Your knowledge on salinization / sodification I have published 50 research papers and edited a book and would be pleased to share my expertise with anyone so desire. From my experience the oil can be aerated in the topsoil and over a relatively (1yr.) short period of time breakdown. But I am more concerned with the very high salt (NaCl) content of the produced water that has saturated the soil. One method proposed to me has been to treat the contaminated area with CaNO3. Thereby decreasing the SAR (sodium absorbtion rate) and bringing the soil back into productivity. Any suggestions regarding either the oil or salt problem would be appreciated. This conference is the fifth in a series of biennial conferences organised under the umbrella of the National Committee for the Productive Use and Rehabilitation of Saline Land (PURSL). The conference is aimed at bringing together land managers, administrators and researchers in this field. There will be two days of talks with 4 sessions comprising: 1. Extent, future trends and R&D 2. Managing salinity at different scales 3. Constraints (practical, technical and economic) 4. The way forward Oral presentations will be restricted to 4-6 per session. Therefore posters and displays are actively encouraged. If you are interested in more information about this conference please let me know as soon as you can. In particular, please let me know whether you may wish to present a poster, display or talk. If you are, then could you provide a tentative title for this. Please also inform your colleagues who may not be on this mailing list. A detailed brochure outlining the draft program and further details (costs) will be available after 30 August. Looking forward to hearing from you.
