Date: Wed, 15 Oct 1997 13:45:37 +1000 From: Jo Sasse (J.Sasse@NRE.VIC.GOV.AU) Subject: Salt tolerant trees & irrigation with saline water Hi to all at Salinity-L, My name is Jo Sasse, and I work for the Centre for Forest Tree Technology (formerly the Forest Research Branch), which is part of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment in Victoria, Australia. I have a fairly traditional background in forestry and tree physiology, and am relatively new to detailed consideration of salinity issues. As most people in this group would be aware, salinity is a massive problem in Australia. My particular interests in salinity relate to; - disposal of irrigation drainage water - irrigation with saline water - salt tolerance of trees - genetic improvement of salt tolerance in commercially important tree species - management of irrigated tree plantations I am currently working on a collaborative research program (called "XylonovA") in which we are developing new hybrids of eucalypts which will combine salt tolerance with commercial growth and wood quality characteristics. The program is managed by ForBio Limited (a forest biotechnology company based in Brisbane, Queensland), and the other partners in the program are the State Forests of NSW (state government agency), the University of Melbourne, the University of Western Sydney, Murdoch University, and TreeCorp. The aim is that the hybrids will be able to tolerate relatively saline water, and still grow at a commercially viable rate. We would anticipate that these hybrids could be used as a step in serial biological concentration systems to reduce the volume of drainage water directed into evaporation basins; used in areas with high, saline water tables, or become a commercial crop in their own right. We are about to establish field trials to test the hybrids under flood irrigation with different levels of salinity in the applied water. At this stage, I'd be very interested to hear of other people's experiences of irrigation with saline water, or any experiences in the other topics listed above. I am also more than happy to answer any questions about the XylonovA program. I'm looking forward to some fruitful discussions and clarifying insights!
