I am a PhD student of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition, Faculty of
Agriculture, The University of Western Australia. Professor R. J. Gilkes
is my supervisor. I am looking for a Post doctoral/research or academic
position in the disciplines of soil science, agriculture and applied
mineralogy. My PhD research topic is "Dehydroxylation, dissolution and
phosphate sorption characteristics of synthetic aluminium substituted
goethite". I submitted my thesis in Oct 1995 and have been awarded a PhD
on 20 March 1996. Nine papers derived from my thesis and ten in total
(eight in refereed international journals and two in conference
proceedings) have been published or being published during my PhD study.

My name is Ricardo Braga, and I am an agronomist
graduate in 1986, University of Vicosa -UFV-, Brazil. I have
worked in different fields of agriculture as profession,
volunteer and farmer. Right now I am a MS student of the
agroecology program at University Rural - UFRRJ -, Brazil.
In my thesis project I will be monitoring mineral
Nitrogen and the relations with levels of that mineral in the
vegetables produced under organic management.
I just started sampling the soil and I will be
collecting samples from now to the next 7 months.
I still have a lot of questions about how to do it, and
I am looking for people willing to help me out and criticize
the methodology I developed until now. The methotology is attached.
I do not have the knowledge of geostatistics, and only
few researches are working on that in Brazil, and none in my
University with reasonably knowledge of it.
I have two questions to check out:
1 - Is the methodology attached good enough?
2 - Does my data can be wrought with geostatistics analyses
under the design I propose?
I will be glad with any help and I can feed back with my
results.

A project conducted at the International Crops Research Institute for the
Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Hyderabad, India looked root growth using root
tubes and mini video cameras. It was run by the Japanese team working at
ICRISAT between 1990 and 1994 on legume cereal systems. The team leader was
Osmaru Ito and there was a symposium held in 1995 I think. A publication for
that meeting in probably in print. Dr Ito has returned to Japan, but the

other things to consider using this method?

I am a postdoc working N availability. I have done the comparison of three
measures
of organic matter or carbon: LOI (375 degree C for 17 hrs), Walkley & Black
(Cw&b),
and dry combustion using a LECO CHIN-1000 Analyzer (Ct). Ct and Cw&b were
highly correlated in 119 surface and subsoil samples, and on average, CW&B
provided near complete recovery of CT (97%). Although LOI may have released
some
structural water from the fine textured soils, strong regressions were found
between
LOI and both Cw&b and Ct which were specific for either basalt or non-basalt
soils.
The relationships of Cw&b and Ct to LOI in the basalt soils were
significantly different
with those in the non-basalt soils.
I think you need to develop a regression between LOI and C content measured by
a standard method in your soil, or you may find help from literature if
similar study
was done in similar soils. The following references may be of interest to you:

As a forest ecologist with an interest in soils, I have done lots of LOI
on non-calcareous podzolic (spodosols) soils in British Columbia, Canada.
The values we obtain mainly are in the range of 2-5%. For calcareous
soils, my manuals suggest using temperatures under 500oC, which you did,
so I too am somewhat baffled about your results. The 25-35% range is in
the order of the lower range of what some of our forest floor samples
show. My one suggestion is perhaps have an independent laboratory do a
subsample of your soils. If the results are the same, then I defer to
the soil scientists in this group.

This question is a little tough to answer. If you mean if N loss by
leaching is important in forests (forest soils), then the answer is probably
no. With forests the rate of N mineralization is probably slow enough that
the amount of N released is able to be used by the forest vegeation. But,
if you take those same forest soils, clear the forests, and raise crops
(including trees) where the amount of N fertilizer added is greater than
what the crop can use, then you have a very good situation for N leaching
(provided the rainfall is greater than the evapotranspiration rate). Maybe
someone else "out there" has more and better ideas.

I have some experience of root-growth observation using
transparent acrylic sheet attached to PVC pipe cut
vertically in two halves, with polyethylene sheet covering
the PVC and adhesion surface. The pipe was set with the
transparent surface slightly inclined downward. Taproot
growth of drought-tolerant acacias was successfully
observed, and it was easy to harvest the root after
experiments.
Another information. I heard that a small workshop on
current minirhizotron methodology was held October 8, 1995,
at Ithaca, New York, USA, adjacent to the international
symposium on dynamics of physiological processes in woody
roots. I didn't participate the workshop, and don't know
the contents of it. The leader of the workshop was Mark
Johnson of ManTech Environmental Technology, Inc. and Don
Phillips of US EPA Environmental Research Laboratory in

which you did, and yet the values seem to be way too high. I don't have
any experience with calcareous soils, but the podzols (spodosols) I've
dealt with in British Columbia, Canada are in the range of 2-5%. We
usually find the 20-35% range to be associated with forest floor organic
material (at least the lower range).
Have you considered repeating the analyses on a subsample at a different
laboratory to confirm these results? If the results are the same, then
I defer to the soil scientists in this group.

Hello - new person on-line.
I am Sally Officer, a 4th year PhD student from New Zealand.
I am examining the potassium cycle of steep country
pasture systems, and I am using quite a lot of multivariate
statistical analysis techniques.
I am keen to talk to other people using these stats
methods for soils research. In particular I am finding it quite
difficult to describe the techniques and results to non
statisticians. If you can help, please get in touch.

Okay so a lot of the pasture soils here are sodic (and saline)
due to over irrigation, and a lot of the soils here are
very old (alfisols and oxisols) esp. in the mediterranean climates
eg. rhodoxeralfs (red-brown earths and terra-rossa, good for viniculture hic!)

Now I have to admit I am a chemist by training, not a soil scientist.
However after 5 years in the dept of soil science some of it has rubbed off!
I work principally in the area of soil organic matter research.
Esp. by solid state NMR methods.

I believe the original problem, was the person was
1) measuring water loss (if doing the measurement by weight)
2) measuring CO2 emmision by decomposition of carbonates
3) or both
So I think she was just an inexperienced student, and your answer
(I think?) had assumed that she had already taken acount of points 1) to 3)
above.

Calcareous soils are also found over a large area of North America, at
least in the northeast. Southern Ontario is almost exclusively
calcareous, having developed over limestone.
In addition, I think (I would be hard pressed to find anyone that would
disagree) that the state of soil science in Southern Ontario is as far
advanced as anywhere in the world.

Whether N-leaching is important or not depends on the N-status of your
system. If the "demand" for N in your forests exceeds the "supply" from
organic matter and atmospheric deposition, then leaching is unlikely to
occur. (The demand is determined by the growth rate of the forest
biomass). In slow growing forests, the demand may be less than the
supply, so that leaching is possible.
Simply put, The biology behind such trends in nitrogen cycling is
competition for nitrogen, one of the most-commonly limiting nutrients. As
nitrogen is mineralized from organic matter, it is taken up by decomposing
microbes, trees, and nitrifiers, in THAT ORDER. Therefore, there must be
"enough" nitrogen to satisfy consumption at one level before the next level
can take place. Leaching of N occurs in nitrate- form, so when there is not
enough nitrogen to satisfy the decomposing microbes, and then trees,
nitrifying microbes don't have any substrate to work with.
You might want to look into extensive literature on N-related issues by:
Dan Binkley, and Peter Vitousek.

Wendy,
You raised an intersting point about nitrate-N leaching. Amount of N input,
crop N demand, and mineralization and immobilization turnover of N (MIT)
are not the only factors that influence nitrate leaching in an ecosystem.
Leaching potential of a forest or agroecosystem depends largely on hydraulic
characteristics of soils, amount and distribution of rainfall and or
irrigation management as well. Even if the soil contains large amount of
nitrate, without adequate water to leach that nitrate into the soil and or
a freely transmitting soil (coarse and medium textured soil) no signifiacnt
nitrate leaching will occur. Therefore, these factors need to be considered
as well, besides nitrate levels in the soil for determining or assessing the
nitrate leaching potential of any soil system.

various seats art the table (teleologically speaking). All decomposers have
certain requirements to be sure, but there is a dynamic system at work not a
lunchtime heirarchy.

test-tube environment that might be true but in the outside????

In response to Kate's note concerning N-loss from forest I would like to add co
uple comments:
N loss is a dynamic process, "the demand/supply" principle has to used with cau
tion. In other words, even if the overall N demand exceeds the N supply, leach
ing might still occur if at any point in the season, nitrate-N was present in t
he soil.
The N loss dynamics should not be looked at seperately from the rainfall/soil m
oisture conditions. I am not familiar with the rainfall trends of Tasmania, Au
stralia, but that should be also considered. In other words, the soil N map sh
ould be superimpposed over the rainfall map to study the leaching potentials.
I hope Wendy is outthere listening.

To be sure!! I call it the Microbial Poop Theory....each succeding levels
nutritiion depends upon the input available to the next higher level and its
utilization of that substrate. As the nutrient inputs change seasonally, the
soil microbial population dynamics shifts accordingly.

Thanks to Peter Harris, Tom Zimmerman, Kate Piatek, Anabayan Kessavalou,
Tom Thomson, Max Turner and Rabi Mohtar
for their comments. I'd like to add more information for discussion.
The soils were recently cleared and planted Eucalyptus. N mineralization
(30-90 kg/ha/y 0-10 cm) exceeded N uptake (2-40 kg/ha/y for 1-4 y plantations).
Nitrification was strong (> 65% of net N mineralization) and rainfall was
2000 mm.
Using the paired open-capped in situ soil-core technique, N leaching was
detected for most of the time. All these measurements were based on 0-10 cm.
However, mineral N was deteremined (0-120 cm) in March and September,
the results were over 200 kg mineral N/ha in March, but less than 100 kg N/ha
in September, and high concentration of nitrate was found below 60 cm for
both cases. QUESTIONS: was 100 kg N lost from system through leaching
and denitrification during that period? Will the tree growers be interest to
know
this?

The soils were recently cleared and planted Eucalyptus. N mineralization
(30-90 kg/ha/y 0-10 cm) exceeded N uptake (2-40 kg/ha/y for 1-4 y
plantations).
Nitrification was strong (> 65% of net N mineralization) and rainfall was
2000 mm.
Using the paired open-capped in situ soil-core technique, N leaching was
detected for most of the time. All these measurements were based on 0-10 cm.
However, mineral N was deteremined (0-120 cm) in March and September,
the results were over 200 kg mineral N/ha in March, but less than 100 kg N/ha
in September, and high concentration of nitrate was found below 60 cm for
both cases. QUESTIONS: was 100 kg N lost from system through leaching
and denitrification during that period? Will the tree growers be interest to
know this?

greetings wendy,
what do you mean by "lost"? from my perspective, the rates of
ammonification and nitrification for one year may not be representative of
annual rates. if this is the case, these rates may compensate for lower
mineralization during subsequent years. also, without experience
working with soils from "down under" it is difficult to predict whether the
combination of percipitation and internal drainage of the soil is sufficient
to leach nitrates to depths below the root zone. finally, as i am sure you
are aware, edaphic factors can be expected to influence the rates and
final products of nitrate reduction although i am sure that some does take
place particularly in regions with 2000 mm of annual precip.
Unfortunately, as i no longer work at the bench i cannot offer any firm
data.
overall, it sounds as though you have an interesting project on your
hands.

Thanks for providing additional information. If N mineralization > N uptake
and with the amount of rainfall (2 m) received, it does seem plausible that
about 100 kg N/ha nitrate was leached. Did you provide information about
the kind of soil? Coarse textured? Percolation or hydraulic conductivity
rates?

Nitrates may be lost through leaching and denitrification, but may be also
transformed to organic nitrogen in the soil organic matter or assimilated by
the higher plants.
The nitrogen budget cannot be limited to nitrate in March and in September.

Dr. Wang, Thought I would chip in and comment. I have been following this
thread for awhile. I have worked as a forest soil scientist for over 20
years in Western Washington State, USA. The rainfalls you quote, and the
climate are somewhat similar to Western Washington. Our forests however
are primarily conifers, and not Eucalyptus. Even though I know very little
about Eucalyptus tree silviculture and nutrient demands, I do know how
trees in general grow, and what they need to grow. I will end this
preface with the comment that I am an applied scientist, and have limited
my research work mostly to simple projects relating to baseline and
follow-up monitoring.
In the area I work, nitrogen is generally the most limiting nutrient to
plant growth, as in many other places in the world. Under extensive
forest management, the leaching of nitrates is not much of a problem.
However, significant leaching of nitrates can occur following fertilization
treatments and during the regeneration phase following clearcut harvest,
burning, and planting.
The data you collect is during such a regeneration phase. I am sure you
have reason to sample within the regeneration area, but bear in mind
this information will apply to the limited time frame of about a decade,
and possibly less. After your eucalyptus trees mature, the total
nutrient demand upon the soil will be much higher due to a higher active
growing biomass on the site. Also, the nitrogen mineralization rate
should be somewhat lower due to the shading effect of the closed forest
(lower forest floor temperatures). The net effect may be, following the
regeneration phase of the forest, that nitrate leaching is relatively
low, and the vegetation is in strong competition for available nitrogen.
Lastly, you did not mention if your clearing land treatment included
slash burning. If it did, then you could expect high levels of nitrate
leaching for several years. Not all of the N is released to the
atmosphere, and the minor amount that is released to the soil can be a
very large input of N to the soil system.
I'm not sure if this helps, hinders, or blows in the wind. Theory is
the apple of the applied scientist eye. And hard data is the heart of
the research scientist. Just accept my comments in the context of the
general condition that may be true. You then must plug in the specifics
of your project and sense if there is anything of value.

I would like to follow-up to Wes Jennings' comments.
While his (Wes') work has been in western Washington state, a great deal of
work has also been done in the eastern U.S., in particular at Hubbard Brook
by Gene Likens, Bormann, and others. I would strongly recommend a peak at
their substantial literature. (If you need some references, let me know.)
Their data supports Wes' comments. Nitrate leaching is not much of a
problem in maturing (aggrading) systems. It could be a problem following
forest harvesting, fertilization, or when the forest reaches a steady-state
(old growth).

The North Carolina State Department of Forestry is seeking
applications for a visiting research assistant professor in forest
biometrics with the Forest Nutrition Cooperative. The position
involves research and systems development for a loblolly pine growth
and yield model that incorporates the effects of leaf area,
resource availability, and silvicultural treatments. Additional

My Science Olympiad team recently placed first at the state competition, and

types, horizons, conditions in which these soils form, and uses for these
soils. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and if anyone has any
information on trees, I'd appreciate that too. I don't suppose that there's
anyone out there on a science Olypiad team, hmm?

Scott, A couple of suggestions about soils and trees. For information
about soils try the 1957 (56?) Ag Yearbook. Look under an article by
Kellog: gets into soil formation, horizons, soil genesis theory etc. Its
old, I think limited to hardcopy, but a classic. For tree reference books
there are a lot of things available. The USDA has published some excellent
publications. I can't think of the exact title of the book I use to have,
but it is something to the effect of Silviculture of North American Trees.
A good reference library should have both of books. Don't have any
suggestions for what is available on the inet. Good luck in your Olymiad

A nice introduction to soils and soil processes can often be
found in Physical Geography texts, which might be a useful way
to begin. Some texts you could try to acquire via interlibrary
loan are:
1. Introduction to Physical Geography by Ralph Scott,
(1996) , West Publ. Co. Scott also has one
or more earlier editions, sometimes with the
main title of "Physical Geography".
2. Geosystems: An Intro. to Physical Geography, by
Robert Christopherson, (1994), Macmillan Publ. Co.
and 3. Physical Geography: An Intro. to Earth Environments,
(1993) by Michael Bradshaw and Ruth Weaver,
These texts are beautifully illustrated and would give you a good
introduction to the basics of soil science-including reviews of
soil taxonomy. They also offer nice treatments of ecosystem essentials
and biomes--including forests, which your letter also mentioned.

If you need some information on soils, I think a good place to start would be
with a soil scientist with the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service.
I would bet that there is such an individual nearby. Most counties have an
office, and from there you could find out where a soil scientist is. Most of
the local offices also have experts who could help you with tree
identification. Also, if you can obtain a copy of a soil survey in PA, there
is an explanation of soils, soil formation, classification and uses.
