Wind Erosion: An International Symposium/Workshop
Commemorating the 50th anniversary
of the USDA's Wind Erosion Research at Kansas State University
Manhattan, Kansas, USA
3-5 June 1997
Background
Wind erosion is a serious problem in many parts of the world. It is
worse in arid and semiarid regions. Areas most susceptible to wind
erosion on agricultural land include much of North Africa and the Near
East; parts of southern, central, and eastern Asia; the Siberian
Plains; Australia; northwest China; southern South America; and North
America. Wind erosion physically removes from the field the most
fertile portion of the soil. Some soil from damaged land enters
suspension and becomes part of the atmospheric dust load. Dust
obscures visibility and pollutes the air, causes automobile accidents,
fouls machinery, and imperils animal and human health.
During the 1930s, a prolonged dry spell in the prairies of North
America culminated in dust storms and soil destruction of disastrous
proportions. The "black blizzards" of the resulting Dust Bowl
inflicted great hardships on the people and the land. Following the
"dirty thirties", the U.S. Department of Agriculture started an
intensive research program on wind erosion in cooperation with Kansas
State University. Today, this laboratory, officially known as the Wind
Erosion Research Unit (WERU), continues to serve as a focal point for
wind erosion research, both nationally and internationally.
This symposium is held in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the
USDA's Wind Erosion Research at Kansas State University. The purpose
is to bring together leading scientists, conservationists, and policy
makers to: identify the present and future wind erosion threat to
sustainability; summarize current understanding of wind erosion
processes, prediction, and control; identify societal needs and develop
strategies for sustaining agriculture, protecting the environment, and
conserving the natural resource against the ravages of wind erosion.
Program
Scientists, engineers and conservationists are invited to present
papers and/or attend sessions related to the occurrence, measurement,
and prediction and control of wind erosion and related processes and
consequences. Plenary, concurrent, and poster sessions are planned.
Keynote addresses will feature various aspects of wind erosion.
Publication
Abstracts for all presentations will be available at the symposium.
The symposium manuscripts will be reviewed and considered for
publication in a Special Edition of the Journal of Soil and Water
Conservation that will be mailed to all registered symposium
participants.
CALL FOR PAPERS
Authors intending to offer an oral/poster presentation are required to
submit an abstract (English preferred) of no more than one-page by 31
December 1996.
Abstracts should include in this order: author, title, text, and
corresponding author's address and telephone number. Submit abstracts
(preferably by e-mail) and participation form to:

Manuscripts submitted will be reviewed and considered for publication
in a special issue of the Soil and Water Conservation Society Journal.
General
The registration fee for the conference will be approximately $200.
This fee includes three lunches, one banquet, one picnic dinner/tour of
the Konza Prairie, refreshment breaks, a copy of the abstracts, and the
special Symposium issue of the Soil and Water Conservation Society
Journal.
Housing will be available at campus residence halls for approximately
$125 (4 nights, 3 breakfasts). Rooms are also available at the local
Ramada Inn for approximately $59 per night plus tax; no meals are
included. All fees are in US dollars.
Registration forms, abstract forms, and symposium brochure will be
mailed to those who return the "Intent to Participate" form (see
attached form). Future announcements and current information about the

journals/books or could point me in the right direction I would be pleased

Also, what do soil scientists on this listserv consider to be the benefits,
problems, or potential of electronic publishing of soil science research [
from the point of view of the authors, readers, soil science societies] ?
Would developing countries benefit by having their research available
electronically ?
( especially if as a result of decreased library budgets and increased
subscription rates 'non-key journals' [grey literature etc.] find themselves
low on the priority journal list. )
This topic on the impact of 'information technology' on publishing of
research has come up in conversation a number of times of late and as a soil
scientist in the information business I would be interested, as I'm sure

Scientists in developing countries should have the same interest in
electronic journals as those in the U.S. or U.K. In many ways, their
need to have their work made more internationally accessible via
electronic technology is greater than that of U.S. or U.K. scientists,
because of the financial pressure on their print journals and because
their print journals are often not picked up in the international
citation indices. The recent book edited by Ana Maria Cetto and
Kai-Inge Hillerud, Publicaciones cientificas en America
Latina/Scientific Publications in Latin America (ICSU 1995), gives an
excellent overview of this situation for Latin America.
There are efforts underway in Brazil to start more on-line
journals; one of the first deals with plastic and reconstructive
surgery, but the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) has ambitions
to expand into other fields with journals edited both within and
outside of Brazil. You might look at the homepage of the Embassy of
Brazil in Washington for more information; this site is an excellent
gateway to scientific (and other) activity in that country --

THEME: Knowledge of the complex interactions between soil processes and
geomorphic, climatic, biologic factors has rapidly advanced during the last
decade. As a result, soils-based information is increasingly used to
provide information required to address a variety of issues in Quaternary
geology, geomorphology, archeology, climate change, plant ecology,
paleoclimatiology, and environmental science. We seek papers that utilize
soils-based information to address the above issues and ranging in scale
from soil-water interactions to soil-based processes occurring across entire
landscapes. Possible general subjects of interest that focus on soil
information to examine surface processes and past geologic events include
(but not limited to): stable isotopes in soils, soil micromorphology,
soil-water balance, surface hydrology, soil-plant relations, hillslope
processes, climate change, neotectonics, remote sensing.

Hello, as a new list subscriber I would like to introduce myself briefly
and to post a position announcement that I hope will be of some on the
list. I am an assistant professor of soil fertility/ecology at the
university of Illinois in Champaign Urbana. My research program is focused
on management practices' impacts on soil properties; two areas of
particular interest are on soil organic matter characterization and soil
quality. If you know of anyone interested in the following assistantship,

Research Assistantship to characterize use invariant and use-variant soil
quality parameters and follow up on research findings suggesting that soil
physical properties may be key contributors to soil quality in Illinois.
Position includes three years of annual tuition free stipend ($13,000) for
a Ph.D. level student. Funding is through a Cooperative Agreement between
the Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Illinois Soil Quality
Initiative. Project will be carried out as part of a large multivariate
study of Illinois farm soils. Applicant should have MS in soil science or

LaMotte is inexpensive and caters to the school trade, but for better
quality (albeit a higher price) you might check out the HACH Company at
1-800-227-4224. They have many test kits and good programs for schools.

Thanks for friendly response to my message.
I am very interested in your research because one topic of my research goes in
this way.
There are some articles describing genotypic differences in heavy metal uptake
in lettuce and other plants. We found a difference in HM-uptake of spinach in
heavy metal polluted soils, too, and in addition, some sorts showed chlorotic
reactions and some not under same conditions. To find out an explanation for
this effect is one of my topics.
I would like to know which effect do you think, is the most important factor for
the genotypic differences in Cd-uptake....mobilisation of Cd in soils as a
result of root exudates, uptake of Cd by the root(passive or active process??)
or the transport-effectivity from root to shoot?
Hope I don't ask to many stupid? questions at a time and look forward to a
lively conversation,

Thanks for the informations about your research. It's very interesting and I
expected, that this effect would have something to do with the root to shoot
translocation. How does the singe gene exactly controlls this effect?
I would like to know how your co-worker is trying to isolate the exudates.
This is one of the points of my work to figure out a method to get the exudates.
In my research, I want to analyze root exudates,especially organic acids and
phenolics ( which seems to be important for P-mobilizing by spinach and sugar
beet). We are isolating exudates by growing the plants in sand culture-afer
washing out the and, the roots are allowed to assimilate for 24h in a 0,01M
CaCl2-or NaCl-solution. These exudates are analyzed after pre-concentrationvia
HPLC.
I'm just on the very beginning of this work and I'm looking for better methods.
I hope you can help me or tell me your way to do it.

Breeding work in Canada has idenitified low Cd lines of durum wheat.
The difference appears to be controlled by a singe gene. The biggest
difference among cultivars seems to be in the distribution of the
cadmium between the root and shoot, so it seems as if translocation is
very important. A co-worker of mine is looking at exudates and
rhizosphere effects as well, but the translocation certainly seems
important.

Hello Soils-L Discussion Group,
I just signed onto this list last night, since I couldn't sleep anyway.
Jeromes list subscription sign up message says my first post must include
my name, affiliation, areas of interest AND a burning' question that
would make a good discussion topic. Well I'll touch on each of those
items, cause I've got a real "BURNING" topic. At least in my book!
But, ya gonna have to put up with my intro for I get to that.
Oh, before I go on, I apologize for posting so soon after a subscription
. . . I usually listen in for a few weeks on new lists, and get a feel
for the group, before jumping in. However, . . . the first few posts I
received, about boilerplates, brought me more laughs than the last few
weeks of the tasteless joke group . . . so I figured if there's room for
a little humor, there has to be room for my burnin' topic.
Now, with that out of the way, here goes . . . my name is Kurt Masters,
I live just north of the White Mountains of New Hampshire in small town
of about 1600, Paulsbourge, as known on very early maps . . . Milan, on
current maps. And Yes, I'm one of those real stubborn, really native,
Yankees. As I turn and look over my left shoulder, from the loft of my
log home, I see walls adorned with antique tools, hewing axes, saws, and
don't laugh now . . . a pitchfork collection. (Okay, laugh if you must),
I also look southeast, out through a beautiful large, log framed
picture window. The ridge beam of the cabin is aimed at Mt Goose Eye in
the far background. Its peak in Maine, is 8.2 mi. away, and stands proud
along the Mahoosuc range. From her summit, and flowing into the
foreground, . . . is the valley of the Nullikonjewa (or Stearns Brook on
current maps). In a watershed of about 37.5 sq. Mi., I'm about a mile
upstream from her juncture with the Sagadahoc or Androscoggin . . . and
about 60 feet above the valley floor. A 30-acre pasture and field
stretch out in the foreground,. The brook is at the far side of the
fields and then forested hillside fades to the left. Toward the right
side of the view, is the downhill side of a large, formerly red, barn.
Its badly in need of a new roof, but very straight and square . . . built
in an age when you made things to last forever. Okay, I'll be gettin'
to the burnin' topic in a second, 'cause there's a big freshly piled
mound of soil, about 15 feet high, setting just beyond the barn, and just
in back of an old farmhouse, . . . and of course, right square in the
middle of my otherwise very pleasant view.
Trust me, this will all tie into my topic, so please be patient with me,
but I have to back up to go ahead. I grew up on that farm, upstairs
over the milkroom. It was across the road from the farm and where my
grandfather bottled the milk for his route downtown. My
great-grandmother owned the milking cattle and the chickens. She
employed her son, who took care of the milkers and she sold the milk to
her daughter's husband (my grandfather) for him to bottle & market.
Family business didn't stop there . . . my farther and grand farther had
about 40 head of Herfords which we butchered off 10~15 head per year . .
. plus we harvested about 15,000 bushels of potatoes per year. Hey, that
could be soil related, maybe he's getting to the point . . . keep your
britches on, not yet.
I grew up farming without a doubt . . . haying, picking potatoes, feedin'
critters, shoveling manure (literally), and there was always that
wonderful task of walking behind the potato sprayer keeping the spray
nozzles unclogged. What were we spraying? . . . dare I even mention DDT?
Well I also delivered 4~500 qts. of milk, each day before school, all
through High School (for the neighbors farm-other family) plus our own
family chores. Come graduation time, I'd seen all the farming I wanted .
. . and in desperation to get off the farm, I joined the ARMY (laugh
optional here).
I actually did learn a useful trade . . . I became an 81C30, a
cartographic specialist, trained in the use of the Multiplex
Stereoplotter -- Who'da thunk it? . . . an ol' farm boy from Milan,
drawin' maps. Just Imagine! Just like Columbus & ol George W. . .
.Trust me. Its all gonna tie in!
Well, finally back in the real world, I landed drawing survey maps for
the USF&WS, and in 78 I came back home to Milan to work for a local land
surveyor. He was, and still is the only surveying business of full-time
employment in northern NH. About 30% of his business was designing small
on-site wastewater treatment systems (septic systems). Being the
draftsman in the office, I got to finalize my boss' designs. I was
soon reducing the field notes, plotting the points, interpolating the
topo (hey, I know what a contour line looks like), eliminate the setback
areas, plan out the grades for the leach bed & ST based on the
information in the test pit notes, (hey, this sounds very soil related
:))
I occasionally went into the field and participated in the collection of
data. It was a time when common sense, was the rule of thumb. You took
a good hard look at the area, determined the sites' position within the
watershed, looked for surface runoff patterns, did a per test, estimated
the seasonal high water table in the pit, and just plain used your head,
and good of' common sense. In 1980 anyone who had designed at least 10
septic systems in the prior two years was eligible to be grand fathered a
designers license (Oh no, not one of those old know-it-alls). Well now,
old #114 here must have guessed a few of em right, cause hundreds of
systems, nearly 18 years old are still functioning today.
About 1985 things started to get a little technical. I took a 10-week
course (1 day/wk) offered by the Dept. of Environmental Services. I
learned about the different horizons and colors, and about mottling and
using them as an indicator of a SHWT. But the one thing the instructor
also taught us was that mottles can be relics . . . from a very past
time, long ago. He told us to look for the depth of tree root growth, as
wetter soils tend to have shallower root systems (makes perfect sense to
me) he told us to use our common sense and good judgement. Okay, now
we're gettin' to the good stuff!
My grandmother's farmhouse has a genuine three seater outhouse off a
corner in the shed, but that was from before they put in plumbing. Until
last week, an outfall into a ditch down over the bank, in the middle of
the pasture, was the only septic system. The only maintenance was to
cover the ditch with evergreen boughs each fall, to keep it from freezing
in the winter. It's worked well for a hundred years or more, and still
works today (damn, that's just too simple!) Its just 240 feet from my
well, and I'm not worried about contamination. The well for the
farmhouse is more than a half a mile away in the opposite direction. (no
chance of contamination there)
In anticipation of the sale of the farm to settle the Estate, I took it
upon myself to draw up a set of plans for a complying septic system,
knowing that nobody could get funding for a house without an approved
septic design. I took the obvious site condition's into account, along
with personally known facts and the test pit & perc data. I felt there
was no SHWT to a depth of 120". The pit had about 18" of the best loam
around (after having cows stomp manure into the barnyard for who knows
how many generations). 18 to 38" are strong brown and olive brown, loamy
fine sands. 38 to 120" revealed olive, firm, silty fine sand with a perc
rate of 1"/12 minuets. There are a few high chroma, distinct and
prominent mottles at about 72". It was mapped Skerry Type Soil per SCS,
and designed an "in-ground" leach bed for the site. I felt then, and
still do now, that those mottles are not from a SHWT. I feel these
mottles are either relics, or caused by the application of massive
amounts or urine and manure leaching into the pasture, or from
continually overflowing water troughs that watered the cattle in the barn
yard. There haven't been any cattle in the pasture for at least 10
years, so now grass grows there(real well).
Last week the system was installed per the plan, by a very good, honest,
local contractor. He did a beautiful job - dead on grade and level.
Well last Wednesday this small 2-3 sq. mi. area of town had our 100-year
storm in 30 minutes. Washed out driveways all up & down the road . . .
even lost my own. Well that nice leach bed, just filled up with water,
and the rain continued through Thursday. Friday morning the State
inspector came to do his job . . . inspect the system. Well this
particular inspector is famous for not having a lick of common sense. He
dug a hole with his auger in the bed area, and because he observed some
water at 60", he issued a "DO NOT BACKFILL" order. He checked off the
box that states the "SITE CONDITIONS NOT ACCURATELY SHOWN" and the one
that says "AN ALTERNATIVE DESIGN MUST BE SUBMITTED TO CONCORD FOR REVIEW
AND POSSIBLE APPROVAL. He further commented that he "found STRONG signs
of SHWT@ 60" and may be higher." If the bed has to be redesigned and
moved or raised, it will add another $5-6000 to its cost. And of course
I'll get my butt sued for the added costs and hassles. I wouldn't blame
the owners either, they did nothing wrong in all this, and most likely
the bank won't give them any more money for the changes . . . It's not
the installers' fault either, he did very nice work as usual, cause he
takes pride in his work too.
In an attempt to talk some sense into this inspector, I had full test
pits dug at diagonally opposite corners of the bed and got him to come
view these. They both had water at about 7 & 8 feet which I feel is
still just the rain from this past storm. I tried to explain about the
rain we had, and pointed out where he drove across one spot on our road,
that water from a small swamp is in the traveled way. Right now our WT
is about 2 feet above the normal SHWT. As I expected, this guy is just
lookin' for a violation and any chance to pull his power trip. So as we
wait for this inspector's boss to drive up from Concord, to have a look
for himself, I'll have to come up with a little proof to support my
claim.
I have a letter coming from the local road agent, in reference to the
rain, as he had lots of ditch and culvert repairs, and plenty of driveway
repairs. At least three of my neighbors took pictures (thank gods) with
water 3 feet over the road, and 3 feet deep washouts in the drives.
Some people's basements were flooded as was mine when the cellar window
wells filled up with water, and infiltrated into the cellar. Lifetime
residents have been very sympathetic to my case and I may have a chance
at proving the amount of rainfall. However, that leaves me with the
dilemma of proving the mottling is not the SHWT. The SCS agent did
explain to me that the term "mottles" is no longer used to describe the
redoximorphic features that indicate SHWT. I guess we finally got to
that "burning discussion topic", how about "Redox features and causes for
them, other than from SHWT" . . . in other words . . . Please Help, I
need ammunition to fight this case. If anyone can help me talk some
sense to these people, and you don't want to post your response to the
group, please E-mail me directly. If you have any questions, ask away!
If you're offended by this long "first post" . . . get in line to flame
away or just hit the delete button.
Please keep any replies simple, as I have never had any college
education, or chemistry or biology courses. Boy, won't that be a

I practiced under this assumption for the last five years I was farming
certified organic (CCOF inspected), '90 to '95.
I noticed little net benefit from incorporating all of the fodder back
into the soil. A legume crop will help sustain a crop, but does not seem
to provide enough N to properly break down all of the fodder.
I have since read that current research shows that a lot of nutrients are
lost to the air. Leaving it lay may be better than incorporation, however.
It is now my thinking that it takes both livestock and grass to improve
the soil. If livestock are introduced to a stand of grass, and not
allowed to eat all of the dry residue, the combination of the scattered
manure and dry grass will dramatically improve the soil humus.

Agriculture" of 1989, esp. pp. 115-119.
It contains a few salient factoids, incl. that 350-400 million acres
are farmed in the U.S. annually, from which 2.7 to 3.1 billion tons
of soil are eroded each year.
Most of their numbers are cited from USDA documents... Perhaps
someone else knows how to get ahold of these? Are they available at
university libraries?

I'm not sure whether this answers your question, but I published a
the following paper:
Buchan, G D 1989. `Applicability of the simple lognormal model to
PSD in soils', Soil Science 147 (3): 155- 161.
This enables mapping between between texture triangles of different
texture systems (e.g. USDA and ISSS), but only for textures in about
half the triangle, i.e. those which are fundamentally eligible to be
described by the lognormal model.

Thank you for the response. Some of the machines my staff use run lotus
release 2.3 and we could make use of such a macro there if it were available.

I would expect so. Several years ago, I examined an area here in Delaware for
soil conditions as part of a septic permitting process. There were several
greenhouses adjacent to the area checked. While the surrounding pedon was
Sassafras, a well drained mixed, mesic, Typic Hapludult, this area showed
gleyed colors in the top 30-40 cm. Remainder of the profile was identical.
Their appeared to be no obvious pedogenic cause - i.e. closed depression,
texture change, etc. On questioning the owner, he stated a greenhouse in which
bedding plants had been grown. Their method resulted in the addition of
considerable amounts of organic matter and water being added to the soil.
In another case, I was trying to grow potatoes in a vegetable garden. The
soil was a silty, mixed, mesic Aquic Hapludult - a heavy soil not really
suitable for potatoes but you take what you can get, a? Just after planting
fairly large pieces, it rained for over a week. On digging them up end of the
following week, I noticed the soil had developed gleying around the pieces.
The occurrence of perched anaerobic zones within soil pedons having a
significant change in pore size across a horizon boundary is well documented.
Briefly, water is retained in the smaller pores by surface tension, refer any
good soil physics book. Since O2 diffusion is approximately 10,000x slower in
water than air, microbial respiration quickly depletes the available O2 and
shifts to anaerobios. Redoximorphic features are readily seen, used to
identify this phenomena.
While none of these instances are controlled experiments, perhaps they suggest
that gleyization occurs when ever the conditions of microbial respiration in
an anoxic environment are met. A SHWT while perhaps the most common
situation, is not the exclusive answer. _Soil: Morphology, Genesis and
Classification_ by the Fannings [ISBN 0-471-89248-3] contains an excellent
discussion, btw.

fluctuating watertable, but also a history going back MILLIONS (and I do mean
millions) of years. Therefore, as a guide to the current watertable status, they
are not a reliable guide. The multiple layers of soil profiles represent a
significant challenge for . . . soils people. Next, Even within a layer of
similar age, the soil features can differ quite significantly, dependent upon the
permeability, chemistry and mineralogy etc . . . This probably doesn't answer
your question directly, but it does demonstrate that there are other factors that
can play a part in redoximorphic features. Good Luck"

Just to let you know: Our state soil scientist society toured a 40 acre
fruit processor sprayfield with extensive prominent mottling induced
to the surface soley by the action of the high oxygen demand of the
wastewater.
Dipyridyl is used by some soil scientists to detect the presence of
reduced iron Fe(II), the mobile ion that oxidizes to form the high
chroma redoximorphic features at the top of the SHWT. In my region,
central Washington state, I have promoted the use of dipyridyl to detect
the onset of reduced conditions in sprayfields: anaerobic soil conditions
are a violation of many local waste discharge permits because of
impacts on groundwater. Anaerobic soil conditions can form in as little as
6 hours after ponding of high strength wastewater.
The front page / nightly newsworthy impacts of anaerobic leachate
are elevated iron floc, iron bacterial blooms and H2S odors in the
downgradient neighbors' household water drawn from the shallow
aquifer. These plumes can persist for a mile or more.
I also have a concern for disease vector control, what with the potential
for a failed septic leachfield to innoculate Fe and S-enriched anaerobic
shallow groundwater with e. coli and salmonella. Normally we count on the
high dissolved O2 in shallow aquifers to eliminate these critters. Instead,
an elevated Fe and S level combined with a reduced environment is
similar to that of the host and would make them feel right at home.
We toured the 40 acre sprayfield with some botanist-wildlife type state
agency wetland jurisdiction folks. You should have seen the confused
looks when they saw the "hydric" soil complete with invasions of
obligate wetland plants. They repeatedly asked how long the redoximorphic
features would persist after cessation of sprayfield overloading.

They were sceptical when we stated that those features would likely
persist until the soil is recrystallized into rock.
