.xt: .75 i .s:8 i A-1 DATA DESCRIPTION DAYS TO TASSEL - the number of days from planting to 50% pollen shed. EAR HEIGHT, CENTIMETERS - average height of the ear node by measuring an average plant per plot. GREEN - A stay-green score with 9 = stalks completely green and1 = stalks completely dead. Scored in mid- to late August. LODGED PLANTS, ROOT % - based on count of plants leaning more than 30 degrees from the vertical at harvest time and total number of plants. LODGED PLANTS, STALK % - based on count of non-root-lodged plants broken below the ear-bearing node (including plants with dropped ears) and total number of plants. LSD'S AND F VALUES - These statistics were caculated from entry by enviroment mean squares (ENTRY x ENV) for two or more locations and replication by entry mean squares (ENTRY x REP) for one location. LSD's for summaries involving years were calculated from environment by entry mean squares where each year-location combination was considered an environment. MOISTURE, % - Grain moisture at harvest. NICK - the number of days from planting to 50% pollen shed subtracted from the number of days from planting to 50% silking. PLANTS ERECT AT HARVEST, % - the sum of the % root-lodged and % stalk-lodged plants subtracted from 100. In taking notes on lodging, a plant is classified either root lodged or stalk lodged, not as both. PLANT HEIGHT, CENTIMETERS - average height to the lowest tassel branch by measuring an average plant per plot. RUST - A relative score with 9 = completely free of rust and 1 = plants completely covered and dying from rust. Scored in mid- to late August. STAND, % - based on the actual count of the plants in a plot and the intended perfect stand. Each plot was overplanted with 10% more seeds than required for the desired final stand. SELECT - a numerical value obtained by adding the % erect plants at harvest to the yield value in bushels per acre and subtracting five times the % moisture of the grain. STATISTICAL DESIGN - Balanced lattice nested in a randomized complete block. Three relications per location unless otherwise noted. YIELD, BUSHELS PER ACRE - Based on grain weight corrected to 15.5% moisture. Beginning in 1989, a step function was used to adjust yield for stand differences when stands were below 90% desired stand. For stands of 80% to 90%, Adjusted Yield = 1/2 [Yield + 100 (Yield)/Stand]. For stands from 60% to 79.9% Adjusted Yield = 1/4 [3 (Yield) + 100 (Yield)/Stand]. For stands from 40% to 59.9% Adjusted Yield = 1/6 [5 (Yield) + 100 (Yield)/Stand]. For stands from 20% to 39.9% Adjusted Yield = 1/8 [7 (Yield) + 100 (Yield)/Stand]. Below 20% stand, plots were regarded as missing, and no adjustments were applied to earlier data. YIELD, METRIC TONS - Megagrams (metric tons) per hectare calculated by multiplying yield, bushels per acre, by .0628.
