I'm glad that at least one post was of use to you.
I read the letter below from Dr. McKinion with interest because his simple
outline was helpful to me. I suppose that the predictions from these expert
systems (even when coupled to simulated output) have their limited inference
over time because there are really so many different possible "weather
outcomes". Certainly a likelihood can be attached to each "weather outcome"
that we specify if the predictions are the result of independent pieces of
information.
In your last work you combined several sources of variability, say output from
the system model and "raw" data values...Were there any problems with
independence? Certainly if there was, the staticians would have discussed this
right? I don't really have enough background in this subject to ask the correct
questions yet; teach me a little and I'll try to piece it together. At least it
was encouraging in some way to see that some of the major contraints to "expert
system work" still remains to be biological.

First Call for Papers Neural Network Applications in Agriculture (NNAA) ICCTA'96 Workshop Wageningen, The Netherlands June 19, 1996 INTRODUCTION Neural Networks are ready for real-world application. It is well known that Neural Networks offer solutions in domains where traditional, non- linear techniques, are not powerful enough. This type of problems often occurs in agricultural domains, where processes are non-linear of nature. In several domains the application of Neural Networks has gained interest. Recent events, such as the Neural Network sessions of the IFAC workshop "AI in Agriculture" and the international symposium "Neural Networks: Artificial Intelligence and Industrial Applications" of the Dutch Foundation for Neural Networks, illustrate the application momentum of Neural Networks. Several projects have aimed at applying NN in agriculture. But which NN-applications have been actually realised in agriculture? In which domains? Using which technologies? Solving which problems? Using which approaches? These questions are addressed by a workshop within the International Congress for Computer Technology in Agriculture (ICCTA'96), which takes place from June 16 to June 19, 1996 in Wageningen the Netherlands. THE WORKSHOP This half-day workshop offers an international platform to present real world applications and discuss aspects of Neural Network applications in agricultural domains. The foreseen public includes decision makers in agribusiness, leading practitioners, scientists from research institutes, extension people in agriculture and food and manufacturers or hard- and software. Topics of interest include (but are not restricted to): * Applications of neural networks, amongst others in the following domains: - Image Recognition - Process Control - Product Classification - Process Modelling - Signal Processing - Predictive Modelling * The process of developing the application * Application from the users/client viewpoint * Learning applications where NN were rejected CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS For this workshop we seek original papers for oral presentation, reporting real-world applications of neural networks in all above-mentioned areas. The ARS systems Research Laboratory at Beltsville has put a web site and
ftp site online that contains a compilation of physical, chemical, and
environmental properties of about 330 pesticides. Addresses:

The idea behind this database is to develop concensus values for the most
important environmentally relevant properties used in modelling. We hope to
"regionalize" these properties in time. There is a Steering Committee which
is intended to meet regularly and referee inputs, QA, changes, etc. They
are: Basil Acock (ARS/ASRR), Joe Bagdon (NRCS), Dale Bucks (ARS/NPS), David
Eckhardt (USGS), Tom Gilding (ACPA), Constance Haaser (EPA), Al Herner (ARS)
Art Hornsby (U. FL), Don Wauchope (ARS), and Russell Jones (Rhone-Poulenc)
ARS and the Steering Committee hope you will look over the values for those
compounds you're interested in and let us know if you have additions, etc.
We do want references if the data are published, but we also accept data
from industry (in fact much of the data is from the manufacturers--this DB
is the result of a LOT of cooperation from industry with coordination from
ACPA (formerly NACA).

I receive queries from time to time about mailing lists in theoretical ecology, and since I don't know of any, I might set one up if there is any interest. I would be interested in hearing back from anyone interested in such a list. There are of course numerous more general lists, such as the CSTB list (Canadian Society for Theoretical Biology) and ECOLOG-L, and some more specific lists like Fuzzy-Ecology and AGMODELS-L. I am not convinced that there is a need for a new list, but there are some topics that don't seem to be covered on existing lists which might make a new list appropriate. The kinds of topics that I think would be appropriate for such a list would be discussion of alternate modelling approaches, such as network analysis, loop analysis, stability studies, applications of catastrophe theory and chaos theory to ecosystems, complexity, and reviews of different software programs for modelling and analysis. There are also some fundamental questions about the structure and dynamics of ecosystems that might be appropriate for such a list. Thank you for this important work. Let me though make two
suggestions. I would like to see the data values in a format that would
be more easily machine-readable (to automate the search and retrieval
of the parameters). IBSNAT's DSSAT 3 file format style would be a
good starting point.
Also, I suggest that the database be expanded to include the rules for
legal use of the pesticide, i.e., the label restrictions. Your
"properties used in modelling" are designed for "calculating pesticide
movement in soils" (from the WWW page). Please consider the needs of
whole-farm-management modelers who must identify the set of pesticides
that can legally be used for a particular soil, pest/disease, weather, and
management combination. This ability to identify useable pesticides is
important to research projects I am currently developing, so I do plan to
invest some energy into the problem. (Once a format is defined for
storing/retrieving the label restrictions, pesticide manufacturers might
be required to provide their labels in machine readable form, to be stored
in "one authoritative source" on the Internet.)

RATIONALE
Today more than ever, increased food production depends on
judicious use of resources. Many soil, climatic, plant, and
management factors affect the way a crop will respond to
irrigation, fertilizer and other management practices. Determining
appropriate crop management strategies under these uncertainties
has major economic and environmental implications. Computer
simulation models of the soil/crop/atmosphere system can make a
valuable contribution to both furthering our understanding of the
processes determining crop responses and predicting crop
performance in different areas. With the increasing availability
of personal computers, user-oriented simulation models will greatly
facilitate the task of optimizing crop and nutrient management and
deriving recommendations concerning crop management. They also can
be used to investigate environmental and sustainability issues of
agro-ecosystems. The University of Georgia, in collaboration with
the University of Florida, International Fertilizer Development
Center (IFDC), Michigan State University, University of Hawaii, and
the International Consortium for Agricultural Systems Applications
(ICASA), has been at the forefront in developing crop models and
decision support systems suitable for use and application in both
developed-and developing-country agriculture. The University of
Georgia is organizing this training program on Computer Simulation
of Crop Growth and Management Responses at the Georgia Center,
Athens, Georgia, from May 27-June 7, 1996.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
In this training workshop participants will learn how a
comprehensive simulation model of crop growth and development and
water and nutrient dynamics is constructed and how it can be
applied to real world problems. Specifically, the program will
focus on:
1. Operation of the new DSSAT v3 software.
2. Description of the CERES and CROPGRO computer
simulation models.
3. Data requirements and collection for systems
simulation.
4. Application of the simulation, models to cropping,
environmental, and sustainability problems.
5. Integration of the crop simulation models with data
base management and geographic information systems.
PROGRAM CONTENT
The program will describe the practical approaches to simulating
the effects of soil, climatic, management, and pest factors and
their interaction with the input needs of crops. The program will
demonstrate how the processes of crop growth and development, water
use, uptake of nutrients and response to irrigation, fertilizer,
and other management decisions can be simulated. The program will
make extensive use of "hands on" practical sessions on personal
computers that demonstrate the application of simulation models to
cropping systems in various regions of the world. Together with
these applications, the methods for assessing the economic risks
and environmental impacts associated with agricultural production
in real world problems will be discussed. Procedures for managing
soil, crop, and weather data will be described.
The program will make extensive use of the CERES (maize, wheat,
rice, sorghum, barley, and millet,), CROPGRO (peanut, soybean, dry
bean, and tomato), SUBSTOR (potato), and CROPSIM (cassava) models
for crop growth, development, and response to water and nutrients.
Techniques for simulation of synthetic weather sequences will be
described. Programs to create, run, and analyze both single season
simulations and crop rotation simulations will be explained. The
crop simulation models, data preparation, and application programs
have been integrated into the new Decision Support System for
Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT) v3 software package, Participants
will be provided with a complete copy of DSSAT v3.
ABOUT THE TRAINING WORKSHOP
The program will begin May 27 and end June 7, 1996. It will be
held at the Georgia Center, University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia,
USA. International participants should plan to arrive 2 days
before the program begins to adjust to time zone differences and
recover from travel fatigue. The University of Georgia is located
112 kilometers from the Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport
which is served by most major carriers. Rental cars are available
at the airport. Athens may be reached by highways 29, 78, 129,
316, and 441; Interstate Highways I-85 and I-20 are nearby.
Commuter flights into the Athens Ben Epps Municipal Airport are
available via USAir. Regularly scheduled limousine service between
Hartsfield Airport and the Georgia Center is available through AAA
Airport Express for $45 per person round trip. Please call 800-

Athens was founded in 1801. Along with the surrounding
metropolitan area it is home to over 125,000 people. Employment in
the community is a mix of business, university and government.
Athens is home for the Georgia Museum of Art and the State
Botanical Garden of Georgia. The Botanical Garden features a
number of specialty gardens and plant collections. A Visitor
Center/Conservatory features a permanent display of tropical and
semitropical plants. Historic Downtown Athens has a rich heritage
of architectural diversity with many buildings constructed in the
late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPLICATION
1. Participants should be university graduates
currently engaged in crop production or agro-
ecosystems related research, teaching, outreach, or
planning.
2. They should have some understanding of soil and
crop science and be relatively familiar with the
terminology used in these fields. An in-depth
knowledge is, however, not a prerequisite.
3. They should be familiar with personal computers and
the DOS operating environment.
4. They should be fluent in English.
REGISTRATION FEE
The fee for this training workshop is $1600. It covers the
registration for the 2-week program, resource material including
the DSSAT v3 software, tea/coffee breaks, and daily lunch. It does

pesticide and they have quite a variety of units, formats, etc. Is the
IBSNAT format very flexible and generic or what? Check out a record for
one of the pesticides and tell me if you think the format will work.
As for adding label information, you probably know that each individual label
for each product (and there may be many products for a given AI and there
are many mixtures) is a carefully negotiated legal document that probably
would have to be included in the data base in complete, as-is form|
Your idea of some sort of universal label format that could be handled in
a database is a great one, and the resulting database would be relatively
easy to maintain. The place for this to be maintained, of course, would be
at EPA, since they are the only ones who know at any time exactly what the
current registration are. We could then hyperlink to it, I suppose...

I noted with interest your call regarding availability of DSS to UK growers/farmers/consultants. It is a difficult question to answer, for many reasons including :
(i) DSS means different things to different people and whereas
one farmer would say he/she is using a DSS the next would not,
even though they are using the same approaches. Additionally,
no clear standard definition adds to the confusion;
(ii) DSS is a new technology still for farmers and consultants,
although this is changing. Without question some DSS are being
used on farms but very few have made the transition from research
projects into practical and viable tools. Why this is so is
another question (poor design, lack of functionality, hungry
hardware/software/data requirements, high costs, ..... ?).
I posted my reply back to the discussion group rather than directly to you as I felt your original posting raised several issues that are worthy of my general discussions. Hopefull others will feel similarly and respond !
[I almost forgot to mention the DSS I have been involved with
:- PEST-MAN (DSS for top fruit insect pest management) and ADEM
(DSS for apple diseases). Both are commercial products being
used 'in anger' by apple and pear farmers and consultants throughout
the UK].

Here at AgResearch Whatawhata (in New Zealand) we have a software group
(AgResearch Software) who specialise in development, marketing, support and
training for computer decision support systems. These packages are primarily
targeted at New Zealand's pastoral farmers farming sheep, beef, deer, and
dairy.
Our current suite of programs run under DOS and have been commercially
available to farmers and farm consultants for several years. Increasing
numbers of consultants and farmers are using the software as suits their
needs. We currently sell four programs:
STOCKPOL is a major tool for stock planning and feed budgeting with multiple
stock classes. It is based on dynamic pasture and animal models. This is the
flagship and is being used extensively throughout New Zealand, including as
an educational aid in farm planning.
TOPFLITE helps farmers to plan the timing of shearing to achieve certain
wool weight and quality goals, and examines factors affecting wool quality
and feed requirements.
BOVISION is a specialist decision support tool tailored to beef finishing
operations. It allows reconciliation of stock age classes, buying and
selling, mating and feed planning, as well as performing economic analyses.
OUTLOOK is designed to help farmers with planning long term fertiliser
policy, by predicting the soil nutrient carryover from year to year and
comparing economic returns from contrasting fertiliser strategies. Currently
only phosphate is considered, but the upgraded version due to be released in
February 1996 will incorporate sulphur dynamics as well. The new version
will be in Windows.

I visited UK briefly this year (May, June 1995) and touring around several
research centres I was shown a number of "DSS" programmes. Almost without
exception these were research models that had had a little bit of interface
added on. Usually there were pages of parameters to be filled in.
In New Zealand, there is not so much simulation modelling going on in
Agricultural science. However we have developed DSS software, because many
NZ farmers want to innovate and use new technology. Our method has been to
ask what do farmers (or consultants) want? Then we make use of simple
dynamical models and produce a prototype. This goes through several
iterations where a "user group" consisting of the potential clients take
away the prototypes ("beta versions") for a couple of months, then come back
together and discuss their experience, what worked well, what was a good
idea, what was lacking, gripes, etc. The software is modified and another
prototype is trialled. So our DSS is very much tailored to the clients
rather than scientists. Actually scientists have to stay in the background.
I think this is why we have been fairly successful in getting farmers to
actually buy and use the software. The software is also effectively promoted
by word of mouth fro farmer to farmer.
The underlying models are simple, and the parameters are biologically
meaningful. The parameters are not entered by the user, but are taken from
look-up tables by the software. For example, if the user says they have easy
sedimentary hill country 25km from the coast in the Waikato region of NZ,
the computer looks up a whole lot of soil, slope, rainfall, and pasture
parameters. Users do not want to have to type e.g. in the phosphate leaching
coefficient for sedimentary hill soils.
One DSS I was impressed with in England was NCYCLE. Very simple, pretty
friendly, colourful.

I agree. We developed a number of DSS products over the yrs. Very
few have really gotten into wide use. Of particular note is
CALEX/Cotton, an expert system for Calif cotton production. We
reached very few people due mostly to the problem of using technology
to transfer technology. Desktops and even laptops were too cumbersome
to use in the real world of pest and crop management. The break
through came with conversion of the essential elements to Lotus 123
macros and making it available on relatively inexpensive palmtops
like HP95,100, 200. The use of this technology has allowed the
program to gain much greater distribution and accpetance than the
original format. However, the integrated aspects of the PC version
was lost, but real time decisions can be made.

I have been informed by Paul Hendley of Zeneca that there is in fact a data-
base system for labels in existence, but I think it may not be free.
Apparently it is a valuable tool because it allows comparison of labels on a
section-by-section basis. If I can find out more I will let you know (or
perhaps Paul, who will no doubt see this, might throw some enlightenment our
way...

Just to follow on from Simon Woodward, we have been doing a similar thing in
Australia with the simplification of complex models and making them available
either as user friendly packages (e.g. SOCRATES..which looks at changes in soil
organic C in farming systems) or hand held slide rules (e.g. Organic Matter
Calculator and N Calculator). SOCRATES is more an educational tool for use by
extension agents, students and some farmers whilst the Calculators are more for
"one-foot-in-the-field" use. SOCRATES and the C calculator are pretty robust,
SOCRATES also has a parameter editor. The N calculator would need quite a bit of
re-calibration out of southern Australia. Wayne Meyer of CSIRO Water Resources
(wayne@griffith.dwr.csiro.au) has been actively involved in DSS's for irrigated
cropping and is worth contacting.

register of mathematical/computer models used in agricultural
research and extension in the UK. The register arranged models
into sections according to subject and purpose. Over 160 models
were described. Obviously, much has happened since 1990 but

The journal has been approved on a "test" basis. An editorial board and
editor have been named. The journal's name will be "Electronic Journal of
Terrestrial and Ecosystems Software" (EJTES), and a "shell" for its
distribution has been established on the WWW at:
http://www.arsusda.gov/ejtes/
An editorial policy and rationale for the journal are available at this
site. The journal will be peer reviewed and will be accessible on a
subscription basis. The basic premise of the journal is that program code,
relevant data sets, and meaningful articles should be available in their
most current fashion to people who can make the best use of them, and
should not be detained by the excessively long review cycles and page
limitations that have been developed for print journals.

I'm interested in the content of the standing crop at harvest time, that is, I ultimately want to know the kg/ha of Cl taken up during the season. References to published values, or your personal recollections, would be helpful. I have been advised this content varies a lot, and the plants tend to take all they can get. The conditions I have are a sandy soil, where nearly all the Cl is applied as KCl about a month before the crop is planted, so probably 6 weeks before emergence. Hi AgModelers,
As an intro (requested by Jerome upon subscribing) my name is Grant Upchurch
and I am a Research Scientist at the New Zealand Dairy Research Institute
investigating the effect of dairy factory wastewaters on soils.
I have been using a CSIRO model called SWIM to model existing soil
moisture data from TDR probes for irrigation events. So far we have
performed a sensitivity analysis and calibrated it for a single site
and are presently in the process of testing that initial calibration.
The results look promising -- has anyone else had any experience with
SWIM ?

I'm trying to develop an integrating framework for decision support
models for orchard managers. To this end we've developed
weather-based tools (apple scab, growing degrees) and a spray diary
package as a demonstration of the concept. We have around 70 clients
paying around US$500 per annum to use the software.

I think the biggest issue facing us is knowledge representation. The
tools we have - mathematical models, relational tables, rules don't
handle many of the sort of relationships that exist in biological
systems (this is made up of these, this is a type of...). Do object
oriented models hold the answer?

I am a mathematical modeller/statistician working on decision support for
African dairy production. My work is carried out in asociation with
other statisticians and modellers here at the University of Strathclyde,
Information Scientists from Strathclyde, vets from Glasgow veterinary
school and vets/production people from ILRI in Nairobi. As part of this
work, I have been working on models for vector borne cattle disease,
and helping colleagujes work on expert systems for tryanosomiasis
and East Coast fever in cattle. I have been trying to think about
the links between stochastic simulation modelling, statistical modelling
