What models have been developed to predict the effects of climate/temperature on irrigation? Most of my experience has been with soil erosion models. Have irrigation models been developed that can be used for this sort of study? 2. What crop models deal well with heat stress and drought? I'll be in El Centro over Christmas. I have been working in Australia with CSIRO for the last 7 years: first on
the SIRATAC cotton pest management system (an early example of an
agricultural DSS) with the Cotton Research Unit in New South Wales, and more
recently with the Agricultural Production Systems Research Unit (APSRU)
modelling group in Queensland. My major interest has been the use of models
(both the model development process and the use of model-based tools) to
facilitate communication between professional researchers (scientists) and
practitioners (usually farmers, but also advisers and policy-makers). This
approach has had something of a chequered history. For a variety of reasons,
it has got caught up (at least in Australia) with the provision of DSS (by
scientists for farmers), thus reinforcing an outmoded notion of extension
practice just as extension has moved on towards approaches that emphasise
participation in problem definition, the design of solutions, and
implementation. Thus, from an extension point of view, these technologies
rather miss the point.
We discuss some of these issues in a paper for the 2nd international
symposium on Systems Approaches for Agricultural Development (SAAD2) which
is taking place at IRRI at the moment. A copy of our paper, On the
articulation of simulation and heuristic models of agricultural production
systems (by Kevin Parton, Art Shulman, Peter Ridge and myself), can be

The problem about working with water use in dry hot areas
is that conventional implementations of mechanistic
evaporation formulae (e.g. Penman-Monteith) can find it
difficult to cope with advection, the localised change in
humidity in the boundary layer of the irrigated crop, the
atmospheric stability and the large differrences between
leaf and air temperature. I am not familiar with the
literature but I guess there must be data from the centre
pivot irrigation schemes in Saudi Arabia where wheat is
grown with air temperatures approaching 45 degrees C.

This model is especially developped for sorghum under rainfed arid
and semi-arid conditions.

2) The problem of soil evaporation and transpiration of sparse crops

3) We are modelling rainwater harvesting, which includes the PARCH
-model. Our model is virtually ready, but not yet released (this
sounds like Bill Gates...).

I am not sure what kind of irrigation models you are expecting to work with.
EPIC is a "comprehensive" hydrologic/water quality model with a robust crop
growth component. Runoff is estimated by SCS curve number method and erosion by
USLE or MUSLE equlations. Dr. Jimmy Williams is the leading author of the
model. It has a good automatic irrigation component wherein you can define the
desired rootzone moisture deficit and the level of replenishment desired, and
model will automatically irrigate the field. I have used this option and
it worked satisfactorily for Oklahoma conditions. I have not tested it for
exterme conditions you are interested in. But, I don't foresee any problems with
it.

EPIC has water stress, nutrient stress and aeration stress (under water logged
conditions). I know Dr. Williams worked with a couple of scientists from
India and added a new drought stress component to EPIC. I am not aware of the details

Thanks for that. Yes, the quote was from the abstract of our paper for
SAAD2. The point we are trying to make is that it is sometimes desirable to
trade off accuracy (precision) for other qualities e.g. transparency. Thus,
a scientific or technical model may require relatively greater emphasis on
accuracy in order to describe the behaviour of a natural system. However,
the purpose of a farmer is not accuracy in description but spotting and
exploiting (acting upon) opportunities for action. It is far from obvious
that this purpose is best served by more accurate models. Transparency and
explanatory power become relatively more important. This argues for the use
of simpler model formulations if the purpose of our models is practical, not
technical. Some of these arguments are made in our paper.

Dear Agmodelers:
Several weeks ago I provided the address of the "ARS Pesticide Properties
Database" web site, a new e-publication of pesticide properties of environ-
mental interest. I have had several responses on its utility, need for
fields, etc.
I am on the Steering Committee charged with providing input to the folks at
the ARS Sytems Laboratory on the database--ways it can be improved, new data
and corrections, operting procedures, etc. We are meeting in Beltsville next
Tuesday and any inputs from you, the user community, would be welcome. This
e-publishing thing is unknown territory for us--we will listen to any

I am developing a model to quantify the risk of polluting surface and groundwater by various point and non-point sources. The model will incorporate the following risk components: -intrinsic risk -concentration dependent risk -location dependent risk (GIS) Specifically, proximity to sink hole basins, losing streams, gaining streams or wells and relationship to sloped surfaces. My preliminary model will be presented to a steering committee representing local government, timber, forest (USFS is a major land owner), range, mining, (minor amounts of) row cropping, sport fishing and canoeing/rafting interests. Due to the conflicting interests of the committee, I'd like to have as much research and general precedent behind the risk model as possible. I am interested in: -research that substantiates/evaluates best management practices. An example would be the evaluation of riparian buffer strip requirements with respect to width and vegetation type. -existing models that quantify water quality risks - especially those developed by people of varying interests. Subject: Aquaculture Sim. Model
Dear List:
At the request of JP I am filling my obligation as a new member and
introducing myself and my topic.
My name is David Zucker and I am currently working on my Ph.D. in
Environmental and NAtural Resource Economics at the University of Rhode
Island. My thesis topic, though not well defined as of yet will in some way
deal with the issues of the economics of land based summer flounder
aquaculture. As part of research grant I am also identifying production
issues of a summer flounder facility which gives me the reason for
using this list.
I am currently in the process of builing a simulation model using Crystal Ball
in Excel. The model, as I have defined it, will use inputs from the facility
manager and provide him/her with risk and uncertainty analysis for three to
four different types of system constructs. Outputs will be in the inthe form
of distributions and will inlude many figures the manager would need to
assist in gaining funds from a financing institution.
Any comments would be appreciated.
