Hi everybody;
My name is Matt Goering. I am a researcher at Mycogen corporation. We
produce environmentally compatible pesticides; (both insecticides and
herbicides) and agricultural seeds (corn, cotton, sorghum, sunflower etc.)
I am not currently doing any modeling, but I would like to educate myself
as to where it is and is not useful. My primary area of study is weed
science (weed ecology in cropland). Most of my experience is in empirical
work, but I can imagine lots of ways to incorporate computer models into
planning. There must be predicitive programs for cropping situations. For
instance, what would happen to the yield of corn in this state if I did not
control bindweed, but I didn't control the canada thistle.....

Dear Barbara,
I just read your presentation, and I thought you could probably help me
with the issue I am dealing with at the moment.
What I am doing at the moment is a simulation of crop growth (mainly cereals)
in Scotland, in oreder to assess the susceptability to soil erosion troughout
the cropping year. I am basically using some equation taken from the EPIC model,
but I can't run EPIC straightforward, because of the lack of input data, and
because of the size of the study area (the whole Scotland).
Having said that, could you please let me know if you have been using EPIC, so
that I can ask you some specific questions about some of the parameters in
the model equations.
Is it possible to apply the CERES model to different kind cereals and to a
large scale study area ?

Ed Woolson 10 years ago entitled "Arsenic and Arsenical Pesticides: a
Bibliography of Technical Publications on Uses, Environmental Chemistry and

articles on the subject, arranged in alpha order by first author and with an
all-author and keyword index as well.
Subjects covered: As analysis, especially AAS; toxicology and metabolism, esp.
plants; environmental fate and behavior; pollution; soil chemistry and soil
microbioogy; human exposure.
I hate to throw these away as they should be useful to anybody studying As or
other Group V compounds in the environment. Anybody want a free copy? I will

simulation model called RZWQM and want to visualize the output from it
using animation. RZWQM generates huge data files which are in
tabular format and, while it has some nice plotting tools, I want to "see"
the results in real time as they are generated. Thing is, I know how the
system being modeled (pesticide behavior in soil/plant system) ought to
work; an animated output would quickly tell me if the model appears to be
working. It would also make a hell of a demo of the model, which I need
this fall for a meeting.
I am not much of a programmer. Are there some packages out there which
provide such a capability? I know how to create the graphs--it's the
automated generation of sequential graphs and the development of an animation
sequence that I need.
I would be really grateful for any help on this. I have asked some of the
gurus at Ft. about it--but additional opinions would be good...

Don,
I have a biased answer for you. A visual development environment is of =
course very helpful as soon as you put anything on the screen - I use =
Delphi. In addition, I use a very nice shareware package of graph =
components called TeeChart (but there are others). You can compile RZWQM =
into a Windows DLL and call it from a Delphi application that does the =
graphing.
Incidentally, this is more or less what I am in the process of doing.
If you want to try this route, I can give you more information.

is based on a new version of Turbo Pascal. Borland has a web page at =

The shareware graphing component that I mentioned in my earlier message =
is called TeeChart. It is available from the author's homepage at =

I have experimented only a little with compiling Fortran code into a =
Win95 DLL and then calling its functions from a Delphi program, but it =
worked flawlessly. I intend to make extensive use of this during the =
next few months.

I would appreciate advice from other countries on estimating the extent and
severity of drought. By this I do not mean simply drought monitoring -
following when vegetation is drying off, but determining whether a drought is a
1 in 20 year (or worse) event.
Australia implemented its National Drought Policy in 1992, though part of the
country has been enduring severe drought since 1991. Government is prepared to
assist farmers only in the case of Drought Exceptional Circumstances (what the
South Africans would call a Disaster Drought .. I travelled through South
Africa last October looking at their schemes).
In Australia we are encouraging farmers to be more self-reliant and to become
better able to handle the highly variable climate that characterises much of
our continent. This is also very important for protecting our natural resource
base (soils and vegetation). It is only when a situation arises that we regard
as being outside the scope of normal risk management that the Australian
(national) Government intervenes.
Essentially there are six criteria by which we determine the existence of
Drought Exceptional Circumstances. These are meteorological, agronomic
condition, environmental condition, water supply, scale of the event and net
farm income. Emphasis is initially on establishing that the meteorological
condition is satisfied - particularly through the use of percentile and
cumulative anomaly analysis, although as you can imagine, how this is handled
varies considerably between the temperate grasslands in the south-east and
south-west, the arid interior, and the tropical rangelands of the north, and
whether the predominant farming enterprise is cropping or grazing. For this
reason there is considerable interest in how best to assess the effectiveness
of the rainfall.
We are doing quite a lot of work testing water balance and agronomic models
(crop and pasture) in different parts of the country (in Queensland in the
north-east they have an excellent operational system to predict total standing
dry matter on the rangelands using their GRASP model - their WWW site is also
well worth a visit (http://www.dpi.qld.gov.au/longpdk/)).
The advantage of these agronomic models is that they allow us to evaluate a
drought in its historical context - we need at least 70 years of daily climate
data to drive our vegetation models in order to determine whether a 1 in 20
event has occurred. As you can imagine, there are some interesting
biomathematical challenges in comparing 1-2 year intense droughts with say 4-5
years of very adverse seasons (with say failed autumn rains) as part of the
process of ranking the severity of individual droughts and in determining when
these 1 in 20 droughts do occur - particularly when the current drought is not
yet over. Added to this are some significant climate shifts over much of the
country since records began last century.
Naturally we also do a lot of visits to affected areas in determining whether
Drought Exceptional Circumstances exist - discussions with farmer groups,
examination of field data, and farm surveys. We are also looking at different
ways in which remote sensing can be used to help us identify exceptional
droughts. It is hoped that a combination of spatial/temporal vegetation
modelling and remote sensing will help overcome some of the debates about
'lines on maps'.

I found David White's comments and activities most interesting. I examined
a number of the sites that he mentions in his email and some sites
that were linked to from those sites. In partiuclar, I was interested
in the long range forecasts distributed by the High Plains Climate
Center (http://hpccsun.unl.edu).
My question regarding much of this information is to its value.
In particular, how reliable is the long range weather and percipitation
predictions. Are they sufficiently reliable to encourage a farmer to
plant or not to plant winter wheat? Of what value are they for a
farmer lacking any irrigation capability? Farming communities already
possess a rather extensive network of communication and information,
although much of it is rather informal and colloquial. When I talk to

Farmers in the Yakima Valley and Mid-Columbia Basin are using the weather
station nekwork here heavily, especially for information on nights when
frost is expected. They call long distance to get the weather data
on nights when frost protection measures may be needed. So thats one
example of modern tech that is used by farmers.

Bill,
DTN and FarmDayta have about 100,000 subscribers, many of them farmers,
who use the weather data.
Personally, I have little faith in the long range forecasts, i.e., 30 &
90 day. The 6-10 moves markets and the 3-5 gets my attention for
planning. Today and tommorrow are the ones that really get used in
management decisions.
I use a lot of email to talk to other farmers about conditions, and use
this info in making marketing decisions.

I went back to 'sent-message' folder and tested the WWW I gave. It was
OK. Perhaps it was the distance that gave the problem. One way I deal
with this kind of situation is to relaod it many times until it is
connected or I am fed up with it!

It seems to me that models of the type described also have a
disadavantage. Because uncertainty is incorporated into the model by
generating a distribution from rainfall data, these models implicitly
have to assume that the distribution of rainfall is stationary. The trend
in range ecology and management has however been away from equilibrium to
disequilibrium models and opportunistic management strategies. State and
transition models using both homogenous and nonhomogenous Markov chains
have been used as an alternative framework. Only the latter
(nonhomogenous) Markov chains drop the stationarity assumption. These
quickly become intractable if you wish to incorporate the intensity of
droughts into the model. An alternative approach, the one I use in my own
work, is to use continous time stochastic processes and differential
equations for modelling herd and pasture dynamics. Droughts are viewed as
random events, in fact as ``Poisson events''. This approach has the
advantage that it generalizes both state and transition and vital
attribute approaches to pasture modelling and allows one to combine
ecological models with socioeconomic concepts in a relatively simple
manner. This can only be done with ``systems'' models such as GRASP and
other related models in an ad-hoc manner.
Regarding the problem of comparing long but less intense droughts with
short intense droughts, one possibility is to use the hazard rate of farm
profits, which essentially gives you the probability of a farm surviving
a given drought. This still begs the question of what constitutes a
drought, so that hazard rates can be compared between droughts.
Climate change can be viewed in two ways:
1) Climate compared with weather is a ``slow'' process.
Thus climate change could be modelled via changes in parameter values
(sensitivity analysis).
2) Climate change can be viewed as leading to nonstationary weather
patterns (distributions).
If the model is capable of incorporating nonstationarities then climate
change can be incorporated almost automatically.

You seem to have made the assumption that we are simulating rainfall for the
purposes of modelling. In fact the sort of work we can do is to model
pasture growth etc based on actual rainfall data. We have over 100 years of
daily rainfall data, and a less complete record of other met data, and so we
can model the impact of droughts based one these. There are no assumptions
about the stationarity of the processes, or otherwise, this is what actually
happened. One can of course question the ability of these models to
translate met data into pasture growth and animal production, but this is a
separate issue.
There is also the question of using the past record to assess future risk,
but quite frankly it seems unlikely to me that anything else would give a
better idea of what is likely than what has happened previously. Certainly
the climate models are not sufficiently advanced to do this.

The point I was trying to make is that you treat actual rainfall data as
if it were a distribution. Because you use time series for rainfall you
necessarily assume that any given rainfall event is drawn from the same
distribution. This procedure is quite common. I have seen it used with a
number of agricultural models and I think it is quite acceptable for
moderate environments where equilibrium is a reasonable assumption.
You could of course break your rainfall data into wet periods and dry
periods and maybe moderate periods, thus assuming a number of
distributions depending on your classification. This is the sort of
approach that the state and transition people use when using
nonhomogenous Markov chains, except they tend to use vegetation cover
instead of rainfall.

It is not just the question of using the past record to assess future
risk. For example a common technique of risk assessment is to use
stochastic efficiency criteria (e.g. first, second and higher order
stoichastic dominance). These are based on empirical estimation of the
distribution of a random variable. This is fine as long as the
distribution is stationary, i.e. as long as the data are drawn from a
single distribution. This is rarely checked by people doing risk analysis.
I think that the approach using historical rainfall data does have some
things to offer, but every approach has some adavantages and
disadvantages. For example, the approach I use does not use historical
rainfall data. So model validation can be problematic, although one could
test predicted means and variances against observed to the extent that
observed data is available.
Regarding prediction of future events. Is this really the desired goal? I
think a more modest but still worthy goal would be to determine
management strategies and policies that work in the face of the
unpredictable.

Hi,
It's Bill again. Glad to know Rothamsted site is working.
However, my problem has not yet solved. The data in that station, 150
years, seem a bit short of my target, 2048 data points per varaible. I
have to look for production data of relatively fast growing
crop/vegetables, and the model related to it. It is a bit crazy since no
one, not even the British, is likely to record 4 harvests per year for
512 years. However, I felt it's worth asking around.
Alternatively, does any one know where to find growth models and
measurements? The data I need is e.g., dry biomass at each stage of
growth.
