Hello Gang,
recently I got a nice Hammarlund SP600/JX-10 it seems everything OK but the
tuning function, in place of the standard knob there is a large numbered
(0-100) "Hammarlund" knob that is turned by a friction hinged in place of
the lock mechanism (pictures on request).
Anybody in BAland knows something about this mods? Is it made by Hammarlund?
In any case, where I can find the original tuning knob?
Thank you very much in advance for your help.

Greetings&73 de

Claudio

Hello Group,

I've posted three more historical radio stories to the web.

* The Story of Portishead Radio - 1920 to 1995.

* A Short History of Cape Town Radio.

* Record Communications - One Impact of GMDSS.

One of the best quality BA sightings I have ever seen. Many loving
shots of restored HROs and Super-Pros even a focus on an "NC" speaker
logo. Interview with on-duty radio man at the Everglades post who
described efforts trying to locate Flight #19 out of Ft. Lauderdale.
Flight #19 is a famous case of missing without a trace in the Triangle
region. This aired at 8 EDT last night but will likely come again
possibly this weekend. I'll bet the radio man interviewed is or was a
ham.

Ahoy... Last night a friend offered me a rusty old Hallicrafters
receiver that is too far gone for my skill and isn't in the time realm
of my BA interest anyway. I just looked it up in Dachis and decided it
was the early SX-9. The chassis and cabinet are very rusty, but the
front panel isn't that bad, the knobs (or most of them) are there and
the dial is fine. The speaker appears to be a total loss and the tubes
are missing. The radio might be salvagable for one engaged in a labor
of love. I know because a few years ago this same friend gave me an
NC-2-40CS in similar condx that I'm still lovingly laboring over. I
almost accepted the SX-9 until I remembered all the fun I've had and
still having with the National.

If someone in the US National Capitol area were interested and is
willing to drive to Falls Church VA to pick it up, my friend would
probably give it to that person. Otherwise he'll probably scrap it for
parts and discard the rusty stuff. Get back to me via e-mail or call
703-281-0010 if you're the one to save this probably rare radio and I'll
give you his name and phone number.

As a few of you know, the ferrite slugs in the IF transformers of the
BC-611-F are "tender", and the adjusting slot often breaks off when you t=
ry
to do an IF alignment. I've been fighting with what initially looked lik=
e
a mint condition chassis for the last two days. So far, I've discovered
the following. The remainder of the slug (which can no longer be adjuste=
d)
is simple to drill out with a 1/8" HS drill bit. Most (but not all) of t=
he
remainder of the slug can be pushed out or blown out with LP air. The sl=
ug
and beeswax residue that won't come out using those methods means certain=

death to the first replacement slug that you try to install. The solutio=
n
is to run a bottoming tap into both ends of the transformer, turning it
only with your fingers (do NOT use a tap wrench) until it contacts the
unthreaded area in the middle of the transformer. The trivia is that the=

threads are #12-28, probably the least commonly available thread in North=

America. However, some of the larger machine tool supply houses still se=
em
to have a small number of the taps in stock. I bought a set this morning=
,
along with a die (JIC). =

Another BC-611 tip not mentioned in any of the manuals. It is much easie=
r
to align the IF's (no noise to contend with) if you do it with the coils
and crystals removed.

OK, so my original plans have tumbled a bit, so I am once again looking
for a ride to the Military Radio Collectors Group meeting at SLO this year
(in a month!). I would be willing to pay for gas, do driving, free drinks,
bonus military radio junk, etc.. I will obviously not have much luggage! I
plan on flying into the San Francisco airport, but San Jose might also be
an option. It could be the 3rd, 4th, whenever - I am very flexible.

I am finally getting around to scanning some of my older Signal Corps
Technical Regulations (like the TM 11s from World War 2, but earlier). I
know at least a few people were interested, mostly in the SCR-131
(BC-148) manual, so I just now getting around to my promise.

Small format, not very thick, but with all of the technical information and
parts lists, plus pictures!

Available very soon (a week or two and they will be done) will be:

- RCP 27, June 1922, Radio Sets SCR-109-A and SCR-159
  (BC-86, -98. super crude)

- TR 1210-20, 10 December 1930, Radio Set SCR-136
(BC-122 and -137, ground set for aircraft control)

- TR 1210-30, 16 July 1931, Radio Set SCR-132
(BC-127, -138, large ground set, two generations before BC-610)

- TR 1210-31, 8 December 1932, Radio Set SCR-171
  (BC-156)

- TR 1210-32, 10 January 1933, Radio Set SCR-163 with PE-46
  (BC-157, another early field set)

- TR 1210-50, 9 July 1932, Radio Sets SCR-131 and SCR-161
(These are the BC-148 and BC-151 "trench" radios)

- TR 1210-70, 11 September 1934, Radio Sets, Types SCR-189 and SCR-190
(BC-175 and -176, very early tank radios)

Price? Cheap. Probably about five bucks, maybe six. Very nice reprints.

Please email me at aw288@osfn.org if interested, and I will start
compiling a list.

More to come, of course!

Hi Ed;

There are birdies and there are birdies. Different feathers of course.
Having eavesdropped on these discussions one fix that seems to quiet down
too hot amplifiers is to put "squeel stopper" resistors in between the RF
or IF coil and control grid. 100 ohms seems to be a good value to start
with. I've seen values in various receiver schamatics ranging from 22 to
150 ohms. I would be inclined to experiment with shunting the new cathode,
screen, plate return and AVC line bypass caps with short leaded ceramic
disk caps of .0005 to .005uF for starters. The idea is to see if some
stage is singing because of an inappropriately residing capacitor series
resonant frequency. If no changes in the birdies occur try the grid
resistor approach before reducing stage gain. Always tweek coils for max
gain to see if you really are "there". Those are just my guesses. Let us
know what your results are.

National Service Bulletins FSN-33 and FSN-35 both address spurious
responses and cures therefor. There are specific descriptions of lead
dress in several areas and a couple of shielded wire / coax
replacements and grounding changes. 35 also describes "revised" mixer
coils in later models and instructions for modifying original coils to
improve spurious rejection.

Of course, lead dress disturbed by re-capping (along with different
capacitor inductii and grounding points) are also suspect in these
cases.

These and all the other FSN's that I have are on BAMA.

Actually i paid $175 for the HRO-50 and an R-808, only
ding on the R-808/ GRC-14 is that the connectors were

$100's selling price, considering all the work & hassle
the packaging would require. And the R-808 is certainly
not worth that much.

Let's say i have an HRO-5TA1 that i was considering
selling. I don't think this piece is that rare that i have
to put it to auction to determine the price, nor do i
have to absolutely extract max $ for it, but neither do
i want to sell it low enuff that it's worthwhile for someone
else to auction it in short order.

So- specifics:

HRO-5TA1 paint original, does NOT need repaint
NO PS
untested. ALL components look original - looks like
no part on chassis has ever been changed.
Bottom plate is plate from junked HRO-7 and needs
to have new holes drilled to match HRO-5TA1
1 orig. coil 7-14 with call signs of other marine/shipping
stations marked on it
3 other HF coils non-bandspread from some other
set - maybe Canadian or UK HRO

What should i price it at?
Tnx, Hue Miller

Hello BA-ers,

Due to damage in transit, I am in need of an HRO-5 (although I think most
PW dial knobs will be fine) bakelite knob. It was sadly smashed on transit.
PW dial has been removed (it was a hard work as it was seized due to the
slipping movement it suffered with the lock screws put in), but I got it
finally out. It seems undamaged. So I just need the bakelite knob. It does
not need to be perfect.

Please, let me know if you can help. Thanks!

I have some controls and junction boxes for the SCR-183/283 and GF/RU
aircraft receivers & transmitters, mid to late 1930s. Anyone interested
give me a shout and we can work something out mutually-agreeable. Trades
might be possible.

Ahoy... The list members will be happy to know that Marty Reynolds, AA4MR, has
agreed to take the rusty SX-9 into his boatanchor hospital. I looked at the
SX-9 again in the daylight yesterday and think it'll turn out pretty well.
The current owner, a BA man himself (but not a list member), was glad to pass
it along to someone who is willing to save it. Thanks, Marty, and thanks to
Jack for providing the forum for this kind of interaction.

Hello,

Anyone have an original Collins cabinet for the 51J-* / R388 series
reciever surplus to their needs?

I would be interested in an original cabinet in any condition as long as
there are no extra holes or metal removed.

Thank You,

Joe - KB9R
