Article: 101131 of rec.radio.amateur.boatanchors From: "n9zle" Subject: No link attitude! Message-ID: Date: Mon, 26 Dec 2005 04:22:39 GMT No link attitude! http://www.n9zle.com/forum/ What is it with this no-link to other site attitude? Years ago when the internet was in its infancy just about any site would add your site as a link from theirs. In return you would do the same. But now it has come to NO-LINKS. Not even in the forums. I have had a website located on tripod for about 9 years over those nine years I had a link to qrz dot com That site received over a million hits. And many users went from that site to qrz and on-to Icomamerica dot com. I have always supported Icom. They have never given a link on their site to mine. I have always supported qrz. But of course he(AA7BQ) never put a link on his site to mine. Well you may say that "I never asked". And that is true. But recently I have noticed he has been deleting my posts. ALL OF THEM. He never contacted me telling me why. AA7BQ just deleted them. I build CIV cables and sell a few of them every week to amateur operators who want them. When I posted one on his site. I found he deleted the post soon after it was placed there. My beliefs are. 1. QRZ AKA AA7BQ no longer has the amateur radio attitude. 2. AA7BQ has gone fully commercial but calls his site "The Ham Radio Super Site" 3. AA7BQ does not have your best interest in mind. I can also prove what I am writing here. For one if he claims he is nothing but a commercial site then why does he ask for donations? If he is not a commercial site than why will he not allow me to post my CIV cables on his site? That takes care of number 2 Now for number 1 and 3. If some one knows the truth about something but keeps it from you he is a liar. No mater how you put it, he is a liar. On the QRZ site Fred is there to help you renew your license. Or so he leads you to believe so. He charges you for it. Mr. Lloyd has never revealed it to any amateurs that you can renew your license or do an address change at the fcc.gov web site for FREE. Yes TOTAL FREE at the FCC web site. The forms at the FCC web site or no harder to fill out than his. His CD. He charges 24.95 plus tax and shipping. On that CD is data he obtained from the FCC and got it for FREE, he sales it to you. Also he has software, created by programmers like MYSELF. And MODS that have been made available from the manufactures and other HAMS like ME! I have been contributing to Amateur Radio community for greater than 10 years, and have received very little for software I created. Never complained when it was copied. I have performed and created several of the MODS for various transceivers. Never asked a penny for it. I never commercialized HAM RADIO. And NEVER took money from some one for something they could get FREE else where. I am sure many of you would like to ask me "what I am going to do about it?" Here is my answer. I have created an open forum on my web site http://www.n9zle.com/forum/ There you can post a link to your own site even if it is a commercial site. You can post any ham radio equipment you have for sell on the site. You can do a callsign lookup at my site from the FCC database, not that stupid qrz thing. I will soon put together an open source database that I will sell for the price of the CD plus the true cost of shipping. About two bucks total. Once you install the database on your system, you will be able to download updates for FREE. I will make drivers available to programmers to access the database in several different languages and operating systems. I will also attempt to make the database available on the internet for FREE to download. I only ask for a little help from other HAMS like myself. I need a few elmers that are willing to moderate some of the forums. It is easy and you will find it fun. If you have any suggestions on new forums or sections please logon to my site and make a post. 73s N9ZLE Article: 101132 of rec.radio.amateur.boatanchors From: kludge@panix.com (Scott Dorsey) Subject: Re: Yellow filters for P7 phosphor CRT. The really (really) old marine radars had such a filter, the RCA, some of the Decca, and similar post WWII radars are mostly in the junk pile by now, but any old-time marine radar repair shop will probably have old displays that seem a shame to junk. I suspect some of those places might pay you to haul off the entire display (including the filters). Seems like the filter for that phosphor had almost an orange cast to it, no? I happen to be restoring an HX-50 at this time. I believe the rectifier tube is a 5R4GYB. The specs can be found on an application at: http://tdsl.duncanamps.com/ (I use it a lot); There is it specifies a voltage drop of 63v at 250ma DC. Also PIV=3100; I Cathode is 715ma max; IRect is 250ma; RMS input is 900-0-900v. Also see ratings chart at: http://tdsl.duncanamps.com/pdf/5r4.pdf . The final setting of the resistor will ultimately be determined by obtaining the proper B+. Some one did the same thing to the unit I am restoring. So I will be doing the above exercise too. Were did you get the 500 volt electrolytic? I hope this helps. Paul P. PS - I'd like to hear about your experiences. I am trying to get a clean schematic. The trusty Wratten 85B (I think) filter used to convert daylight to tungsten-equivalent lighting for photograpic work is probably about right. (You want the lighting grade, not the camera filter grade, as it's a lot cheaper.) Or any suitable stage lighting 'gel' - for best results, get one that is an exact match for the afterglow, as that will give you the brightest trace while still knocking down the blue component. Tinted Perspex (Plexiglas) may also be worth a try, or even the brown cellophane you get in some chocolate boxes, sandwiched between two sheets of clear plastic of glass. (I won't suggest rolling your own filters out of gelatine and food colouring.... Yet!) Hope this is some help, Chris. -- "It's 106 light-years to Chicago, we've got a full chamber of anti-matter, a half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing visors." Ford Model T, etc). Now that I am older myself, I can better appreciate the nostalgia value of such pursuits. There are lots of pursuits out there that have novel and priceless value to the pursuers. Birdwatchers, for example, have been described as fanatics. In recent years I have sought, and obtained, great pleasure working on that old "obsolete" tube gear and that includes building gear from junk, spare parts, etc., out of the junk box. For many, who could not afford this stuff as a kid but always wanted it, now maybe they can afford it even if they don't fix the stuff. So, as this stuff becomes an "antique" there will be a progressively smaller fraction of the population that will pay what seem to be progressively more outrageous prices. That old tube gear, however, wasn't all that bad, especially for HF frequencies, and beyond that new solid-state gear, it is much more repairable (because they were built of discrete devices instead of chips, some of which are no longer available, and the circuitry was before today's scale of ultracomplexity and ultracompactness). You generally don't need fancy equipment to fix the stuff. Yes, eBay (etc), is the great attractor and auctions play on our psychological weakness that our "wants" force us into bidding wars to satisfy our wants; I've looked for a few old boatanchors myself and see what is essentially junk (with many statements of "as is", "the tubes light up, that's it" or "I have used the rig") and you wonder if its salvageable to functionality or you can only "talk about owning an X" rather than using it, and the "fixer-upper" status means that after you paid an outrageous sum of money for it, then you have to spend an outrageous sum of time and effort to restore it and that may also mean more money yet). Then there was the guy who said "I hooked a wire to the receiver and heard 18 stations" as if that tells me much besides its not dead. Me, after spending an outrageous amount of time on eBay, and getting snotty, arrogant answers to questions and inadequate answers to questions) I'm going to be going to more hamfests and actually look at, lift up the lid, talk to the guy (for history and price), evaluate the whole thing on the spot, and then arrange my own transportation (the back seat of my car) back home so at least for that part of the trip I know what is going on. Another thing: I'm going to crack that ARRL handbook and that Bill Orr handbook for receiver circuits and just build my own. I see all these fancy rigs with two VFOs, readouts, multiple digital meters, scopes, TV screens, a couple hundred knobs and buttons and you sometimes can't run them without reading the manual [if its readible]. To me, it's not real ham radio. Its an "appliance operator" hobby. I can take just about any receiver or transmitter made before they got complicated and figure out how to adjust all the knobs and switches to receive stations, and talk to them, just by reading the label on the knob. What is going on, functionally, is much easier to decipher if you look at the schematic. I like all of that. $1000 for a 75 series (or similar vintage) Collins rig? Yes, I've seen them at hamfests with that price on them. I saw a Hallicrafters SX-88 (very rare) receiver get a written bid of $5,000 in a silent auction at one hamfest. Nice for rich guys or guys who don't know what else to do with their money. But, spending a bunch of money on such an item is, to me, also not ham radio. Oh, yes, I've had a lot of those solid state rigs, too, when I was younger. These days, I'm having much more fun with the old tube gear, both restoring (a little) and building (a lot). To each his own. I paid more than $1K for an all-Collins R-390/URR reworked by Rick Mish, and I _love_ it. It's not computer-controllable, nor is it frequency-agile. It doesn't know about FM, it takes a bit of work or an adapter hung on the IF to get good SSB out, but it's a genuine marvel of design and construction the like of which we probably shall not see again. A 51J4 is a little brother to an R-390, and a really nice RX, and yes, it may be worth $1K to someone. This one was Malcomized by Mal, NC4L in March of 1997. It has had all of the relays replaced plus other upgrades performed by Mal. It has a CW Filter but no AM/FM Board. Cosmetically it is in good but not mint shape. The cabinet looks good and the front panel is nice. There are some nicks and scratches mainly on the trim around the front panel. It works but has problems. On bands above 20 meters, sensitivity is low as is power output. It loads up to over 100 watts on 20. On 40 meters the VFO does not change frequency. One meter lamp is burned out. Price is $425 plus shipping. No mic or manual. Whan ever you let equipment set like that you normally have to reform the electrolitic caps. Use a variac and bring up the voltage slowly. They are not "Museum Quality" by any means. They appear to have been taken out of service. The 390 has a nice looking panel and the 390a has a few scuff marks. Both are relativly clean inside, but have a small amount of grime from age on the chassises. The megacycle and kilocycle dials work easily on both radios. (I wonder if they can copy signals in Megahertz :>)) They both are missing the tube shields that I remember from my Navy days. I was thinking on getting rid of one of them and using the funds to have the other refurbished by one of the experts on the web. Thanks again to all for the replies.
