Looking at their graphed data, first, there are geomagnetic maxima that are not related to any sunspot maxima, and second, the sunspot activity could just as easily be 5 years ahead of the geomagnetic activity. Prediction? Ptui! Theory? Hypotheses? Mechanism? Where oh where has my little dog gone? In terms of causal analysis, there are at least four factors required - all these 'scientists' have is a shaky correlation coefficient which I am not convinced goes the right way. If I recall my MHD lectures, the solar wind gives rise to changes in the Earth's magnetic field - not the other way around. A quote from one of the 'scientists' is illuminating: "We don't know why this works," says Hathaway. The underlying physics is a mystery. "But it does work." The first and second sentences are probably correct. The last sentence is pure guesswork. We are getting a similar kind of mindless journalising of science for the great uneducated about so-called 'global warming' and the emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The _First_ TR-4 schematic would be sometime in 1965, probably around s/n 15000. That is the one I am looking for. The earliest TR-4C schematic I have is 3147435161, which translates to 3/14/74, s/n 35161 and up. The _First_ TR-4_C_ schematic would be sometime in 1972, probably around s/n 32000. That is the one I am looking for. It's possible that there are one or more additional versions between 32000 and 35160, but I'd be happy to find just the one around 32000! SO ! If anyone with an _original_ Drake TR-4 or TR-4C manual would check the version number on the schematic, I would very much like to find one or both to include in the CD. The nice thing about the D layer is it goes away at night, regardless if we are at a solar minimum or maximum. While enhanced solar activity can increase daytime absorption, it all goes away at night. 73 Tom ------------------------------ Message-Id: <5.0.0.25.2.20070101210017.019db080@POP3.citlink.net> Date: Mon, 01 Jan 2007 21:06:53 -0700 To: Old Tube Radios From: Paul Beckwith Subject: SKN Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed SKN was great. Allen DuMont's life is interesting, perfected (invented?) magic ray tuning eye a la 6E5, believe he sold rights to it to RCA(?), that financed him in his own company. Vy active in early tv development, his ideas presented frequently to the original NTSC committee (he was on it) in late 30s'/early 40s. Later, ad his own tv network in NYC/Phila/DC area after WWII. And of course famous o'scopes...I had some, some 304's & some earlier ones, they all worked FB ever after 50 yrs, hated to part with 'em due to move & space restrictions. My uncle had the kind of TV pictured in the link. Except, its CRT was fixed in place, was not 20" in size, maybe 12" or so. Later, the set was modified (by duMont I think) to take a larger CRT, maybe 17". But it had exactly the front panel shown in the link. I think I remember (I was just a lad then) 807's or somesuch large horiz sweep tubes, glowing bluely. The tuner was fascinating, had abt a 24" long dial folded back on itself, so pointer went first to left (on bottom), the swung thru 180 deg, then to right. Continuous tuning, abt 50 to 220 MHz, inc. bdcst FM & all in between. Scale was so long it had a tuning motor to get you from one end to the other! Think it used Mallory "Inductotuner". Also, center-zero tuning meter in the dial. The chassis for the front end & IF strip was copper plated, it was separate from sweep chassis, audio(?) & ps. I once ran across one of these RF/IF chassis at a antique radio swap meet in 90's but didn't buy it. 43 tubes, holy smoke! Set had many SW bands as well, each one bandspreaded as well as record changer & decent loudspeaker. When my uncle died in late 60s I attempted to secure this tv but was unsuccessful. :( The oldest DuMont tv I ever saw was 1939 model in Chicago's museum of broadcasting. The advert for it said it was "suitable for use in a bar or tavern"! Yours for good NTSC viewing! In England, where 405 line TV (from 1936 standards) disappeared abt 1984, they still keep it going, calling it "405 Alive". What're we gonna call "525"?! 73 de WB0EQ/VE6 ------------------------------ Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: binary Mime-Version: 1.0 From: To: Old Tube Radios Subject: Noise issues Content-Type: text/plain Message-Id: <20070102201052.AF88C1ADDF6@filter6.e-filtering.net> Date: Tue, 2 Jan 2007 13:10:52 -0700 (MST) If I had a noisy RF environment around my antenna, for starters, I would not use anything except a center-fed dipole, fed using coax & a good 1:1 balun (probably a current-type to ensure actual current balance in the dipole), to make sure that the feedline was not susceptable to picking up even more noise on top of what the antenna hears. Also, this will minimize radiation of RF from feedline, to avoid EMI. I am not sure that a G5RV would do the above for you...coax feed w/no balun, off-center feed. Not optimum for your particular situation I'd say. I was an avid viewer of WABD in New York, especially for the Captain Video series, on our 10" Admiral. I got to meet Al Hodge, the Capt. himself, at a remote they did on Long Island. >The tuner was fascinating, had abt a 24" long dial folded back on itself, so >pointer went first to left (on bottom), the swung thru 180 deg, then to right. >Continuous tuning, abt 50 to 220 MHz, inc. bdcst FM & all in between. A friend down the street had one of those. Astounding. DuMont was also very active in the two way radio field. The San Francisco PD was all DuMont on low band at one point. I have one of their DuMont DC control consoles, complete with mechanical digital clock and VU meter, here in my office.
