I had eliminated pretty well every other device in the shack and suspicion fell on the power supply in the receiver. The B40 uses two 6X4s with their plates strapped together, one on each end of the centre tapped HT winding. They were both pretty tired looking but tested OK in the AVO tube tester. One had a lowish H-K resistance of about 200K . Scoping the + 270 V line showed about 1.5 V p-p of ripple. On a suggestion from another boatanchorite (thanks Brian!) I began looking for sources of RF transients generated by the rectifiers. Replacing the two 0.01 Hunts caps across the halves of the secondary made no difference. I looked for transients by waving a scope probe (connected to a Tek, what else?) around in the power supply section and there it was! One of the 6X4s (not the leaky one) was generating a really sharp negative spike as it switched off. When I held the probe close to the tube it was quite obvious. Replacing it cured the problem. What's going on here? Is this a sign of a little bit of gas in the tube? My tube tester doesn't register anything wrong in the gas test position but I don't know if the test is valid in diode mode. 73, Morris ------------------------------ Message-Id: <6.2.1.2.2.20070201070226.02e79780@pop-server.nc.rr.com> Date: Thu, 01 Feb 2007 07:03:02 -0500 To: Old Tube Radios From: john Subject: Re: Hudson American radios Cc: Old Tube Radios Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed We used to have an expert on all things Kaiser, but dunno about Hudson.... It consists of 4 racks with racks 1-3 having identical receivers - each receiver consists of 4 RF decks plus misc IF and detector units. Various diversity detectors and RTTY converters round out rack 4. FYI, I have started a web page on the FRR-24 at http://www.virhistory.com/ham/frr24.htm I got into this when I acquired a couple of FRR-24 RF decks at the Shelby hamfest. Their really swell design and construction got me hooked, so last weekend John K4OZY and I rented a van and went on a Radio Expedition (isn't it nice to have a buddy to help with your BA affliction? - he was chuckling the whole time). Anyway, now I have almost enough pieces (some NIB) to assemble a one-rack receiver. I would like to correspond with any other owners or parts sources as I start putting this beast together. Please pass this message along to anyone you think might have one of these behemoths, or parts thereof. There are a couple of FRR-24 modules I'd really like to have, but am interested in most any FRR-24 parts that may be available. I don't have a power supply (PP-590) so will have to build an equivalent, unless someone has a spare. Also only got 3 RF units so no 16-32mc coverage for now (I need an AM-452). And I'd like to find a patch panel (SB-138, SB-140, SB-169, SB-143) if anyone has a spare. Some day I would also like to find a CV-127 FSK converter - I am afraid if I get it that John will come by and drop a model 15 on my front porch, though! I have some trading material for other FRR-24 owners - a couple of extra KY-62 keyers and one spare AM-438 detector. I also have some extra extender cables. I have got a copy of the operator and maintenance handbooks (manual chapters 4-7) with individual unit schematics but no overall system cabling diagram - I guess that was in the Installation chapter - I think I'll be able to figure out the hookup, though, if I can't find a copy. Can anyone give me a few names of locals down = there who I can contact and perhaps get together with for an eyeball? = Contact info would be helpful, mainly calls and email addresses. It = will certainly help fill up a few boring, sunny, warm days. (Area = within 20 miles or so of Clermont.) Many thanks for whatever you can do, and looking forward to the = get-together. 73, Bill w2dgb ------=_NextPart_000_000F_01C74719.8D818A60 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ---REMAINDER OF MESSAGE TRUNCATED--- * * This post contains a forbidden message format * * (such as an attached file, a v-card, HTML formatting) * * Mail Lists at theporch.com only accept PLAIN TEXT * * If your postings display this message your mail program * * is not set to send PLAIN TEXT ONLY and needs adjusting * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ------=_NextPart_000_000F_01C74719.8D818A60-- ------------------------------ From: "Grant Youngman" To: Old Tube Radios Subject: FS: Gold Dust Twins- nice condition Date: Sat, 3 Feb 2007 21:09:34 -0600 Message-ID: <001201c74809$e664a6d0$6701a8c0@GYGateway> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Posted here before going elsewhere with it. In the interest of ongoing lightening of the load, I've decided to part with my very nice 75A4/KWS-1/312A1. 75A-4 -- ser 705, electrically restored, modified and updated by Howard Mills in 1996 (I'd forgotten I've had the radio that long. We get older faster every year it seems). The cabinet paint finish is original -- no physical restoration was required - and is outstanding. Filters include: 6.0 Khz, 3.1 Khz, 2.1 Khz, and 800 Hz). This is a beautiful receiver. KWS-1 -- ser 1329 (very late with Test Key switch) and 250B's in the final. Purchased some years ago from Joel Thurtell (remember the RadioFinder?), who indicated when I purchased it that it had come from the estate of Arthur Godfrey. If you know who that was then you're probably at least as old as I am :-) There is no documented provenance however, and it won't affect signal quality in any case. It is complete and in very fine condition. A few VERY small chips in the paint finish which is also original. The screen transformer has been discretely replaced with a Dahl replacement, and the HV rectifiers are 3B28's. The HV transfomer is currently mounted without the milled posts, but the posts are "in the box". The blower is as quiet as you could expect, but does not (as of last use) appear to need bearing replacement. Otherwise all original, except for the usual electrical restoration, cap updates/replacements, etc. I have the original blower hose as well as a piece of SCAT tubing (much more flexible and easier to handle). 312A1 -- very nice with lamp and shade. Includes a 3rd party terminal strip cover I purchased recently (I'll have to find it) but not an original. The main tuning knobs on both radios are black powder-coated solid brass, milled to match the A-line radios. I obtained these from Mac some years ago. Also includes all original cabling, original Collins TX/RX relay, manuals correct for the radio versions, and all of Howard's documentation on the 75A-4. I also have a wheeled dolly for the KWS-1. Everything is working well, or was working well the last time used. PTO endpoints were set when I obtained the radios, and are still good. I can't guarantee that you won't need to go through and do an alignment however. I'll have jpgs of everything late tomorrow, and will email them on request. Asking $4800 for the package, which I will not break up at this point so please don't ask. Reasonable offers will also be considered. I simply can't deal with attempting to safely pack the KWS-1 for shipment. As a result, the Twins are PICKUP ONLY in the Dallas/Ft.Worth area by you or a designated packer/shipper.
