Alkalines have some hydroxide or another in them. Both are water soluble, so thorough washing ending in a wash with distilled water and a *thorough* drying-I use a heat gun-is what I do. I then scrape the loose stuff of the affected sheet metal and coat with lacquer to prevent further corrosion. The switch contact might benefit from some DeOxit. I don't have a Simpson 260 or any of its kin. Noble as the 260 is in a high intensity RF field I've manage to get by without its kind. Originally the only way a stable resistor could be made was with wire. Resistance wires were made with zero temperature coefficient alloys, nichrome being mentioned in a text or two. Carbon in the form used to make resistors has a pronounced positive temperature coefficient. Precision resistors are not to be confused with temperature stable resistors as temperature stable resistors were wirewound while cheaper carbon film precision resistors avoided the inductance of a wirewound they still drifted in value with temperature somewhat. Stop to think, if all the resistors in an instrument drifted the same amount than ***ratiometrically*** there would be no loss of accuracy with temperature variation. That's how some instruments got by without wirewound resistors, usually the cheaper ones. Then along came metal compound film resistors that, like wire, could be made to have practically zero temperature coefficient. Easier for engineers to get away with sloppy desigining also..... ;-) Arden Allen KB6NAX ------------------------------ Message-ID: <002401c7651c$c61f2cd0$b4e47443@KB6NAX> From: "Arden Allen" To: Old Tube Radios Subject: Re: Battery leakage & corrosion Date: Mon, 12 Mar 2007 20:06:54 -0700 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="Windows-1252" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit > Never saw the stuff travel like this before (I may have just not noticed it then). I live near San Francisco, and the best morning signal here seems to be on 9740 KHz. Prior to whatever changed, it was weak (s3 and below on my SX-42) up to 8 AM PST (=9AM PDST) and weaker after that. This morning I saw s7 up to 9AM PDST and about s3 thereafter. They interrupt the signal for a few seconds to re-configure something (antenna pattern?) at that time. I have not found an evening frequency that I can receive here. Suggestions are welcome. I live at the bottom of a hill and face east with a multi-trap sloper antenna as well as a 40 foot "long" wire at right angles to the sloper.
