It was an interesting concept - mercury was heated and jets of mercury vapor "blew" downward, taking molecules of the gas being removed with them. Liquid nitrogen was used to condense the mercury vapor, and a mechanical "roughing" pump removed the gas. That's a pretty poor description, so I Googled diffusion pumps, and http://www.2spi.com/catalog/vac/santovac-5-diffusion-pump-fluid-technical-paper.html gives a much better description. Notice diffusion pumps are still around; they just don't use mercury any more. Since there are few gas molecules at high vacuums, large diameter tubing is used. I wonder how vacuum tubes are connected to the vacuum system, particularly in automated production lines. It's similar to tube-type Tek scopes that used a protruding 3-prong, standard AC plug that would take any standard extension cord, but it's recessed into the case a bit, with only the ground prong sticking out of the recessed area. A Cooper-brand NEMA 5-15R receptacle has an outside diameter that's just barely too large, measuring 1.345" in diameter. The recess on the piece of test gear is 1.300" in diameter. I hacked up an extension cord with a pocket-knife to make it fit, but it doesn't fit well and I don't feel good about this. Looking thru the standard NEMA listings, it would seem that a NEMA 5-15R is the right choice - IE: there isn't anything smaller than 5-15R. Any thoughts on what the right matching receptacle is? However, I remember reading a = few articles long ago where an individual created his own vacuum tube using = what we would call rather primitive tools today. I would assume that the = vacuum wasn't that good since I also read tales of very short life. One = homebrew tube I saw was nothing more than a glass tube with a couple of rubber stoppers. The builders didn't seem too worried about characterizing the device as they just wanted to get on the air and make as many QSO's as possible before failure. If you made such an attempt today you would no doubt need equipment to characterize the device. There is no telling = where one would obtain the materials for such a project or how long the device would last! Some years ago I worked for a company that manufactured = vacuum measurement sensors. They had three types of vacuum pumps running 24/7 = to create and maintain as perfect a vacuum as possible. In the event of = failure of the vacuum, it took several days to start up the whole system in the event of loss of vacuum. There were vacuum pipes all over the building = and they became contaminated with loss of vacuum and had to be "purged" = before restarting. Quite a headache. There was a rough mechanical vacuum pump = with filters to trap oil and impurities. This was followed by a turbo = molecular pump spinning at extremely high RPM. I seem to remember roughly 26,000 = RPM! Whoa! It was a stack of blades with decreasing angles of pitch from top = to bottom. Then there was an Ion Gauge which is very interesting for lovers = of vacuum tubes. Electrically it looked like a directly heated triode with around +150 volts on the grid and -30 volts on the plate.
