It appears that at some time in the past, maybe as recently as the 70's, the OD of all of the various cable connectors was increased just enough that the new ones won't fit into the older recessed connectors. I got into the habit of whenever I stopped by a garage sale looking for boxes of old electrical stuff under the tables and checking out any black bakelite plugs or sockets found therein. Might not apply to the three-pole this thread was about but in the case of the twist-locks, there are several variants of front faces on the females. But the contacts inside are the same in all of them. You can modify the key arrangement in the front faces if necessary with a thin file (or for that matter a milling machine). One of the things I made from scratch was a vacuum guage. As I remember it, I started with a glass tube upon which I fused a smaller tube to be connected to the object being pumped down by a vacuum pump. It, as many other useful ? things, got thrown out by an ex-XYL. (We also made cutting tools and clamps and such.) The room was very small and you were not allowed to open a window because the breeze would flicker the flame on the torch. The lucky ones got to take the course in the winter; the un-lucky ones got to 'sweat' the course in the summer or fall. Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hi Arden and gang, Well, I went about digging through my boxes of junk, er, I mean GREAT STUFF, (isn't that a Larry Ware expression?) and didn't find the cord that I thought I had which might have worked. I swear at one point I'd bought some cords at a hamfest that had a smaller OD three-pin plug. But, no luck. I finally came to the conclusion that what I need is probably not going to be found at Lowe's or the local electrical distributor. (Now *THAT* was a fun phone call, trying to get the counter guys at INLINE to measure the OD of a NEMA plug was a real joy!) So I finished up my hack job on the extension cord with a box cutter so that the socket on the cord fully mates with the plug on the equipment. It looks a bit cheesy, but fits nice and tight. It's *behind* the unit so when its on the shelf above the bench no one will ever see it. I needed to get this thing off the bench so I can get back to working on stuff rather than working on my test equipment. Someday I'll find the right cord... thanks and 73, ben, kd5byb Arden Allen wrote: > Unless someone on the list coughs up a vintage receptacle you're probably > out of luck. Looks dusty but good & very original. It will clean up beautifully. Will need vy careful rescusitation(sp?) as I don't know when it last played. First odd thing I noted was tube shields for octal tubes with a small tab which is in goes around the octal key in the base & is in contact with pin 1 of the tube it's on. ?? Now here's the kicker: My wife, who knows nothing about radios & such, exclaimed to me how very attractive this radio is. That's a first for her. Hooray for post-WWII retro styling. Will keep you posted on progress. --John Sehring WB0EQ/VE6 ------------------------------ Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: binary Mime-Version: 1.0 From: John Sehring To: Old Tube Radios Subject: Need "beta readers" for an antenna article Content-Type: text/plain Message-Id: <20070403222933.81A9D32BA8F@filter6.e-filtering.net> Date: Tue, 3 Apr 2007 16:29:33 -0600 (MDT) I need "beta readers" for something I've written up. I've prepared a detailed response to an item in April 2007 QST's "Technical Correspondance" re antennas supported in trees. My piece involves theory & software modeling of antennas. It's a tricky subject as there isn't much data around on this but lots of anecdotes I'm sure. I'd appreciate inputs from any BA reader who'd like to do a review of the article before I send it. Pse email me directly if you're interested. Thanks! --John Sehring WB0EQ/VE6 ------------------------------ End of BOATANCHORS Digest 4037 ******************************
