Like driving an old restored car from out of the 40s. Be very careful cleaning the dial markings. Especially the "red" ink or paint. it will wipe away very easy. Different construction and difficulties, but IMHO about the same difficulty, I've done the complete job on both. "just in need of " what you say is not a small job. Be sure the small knob and shaft for the bandspread clutch is there in the center of the main tuning knob. I think that's the most often missing/broken piece, and just about a lost cause to try to replace or duplicate. epay prices are not a good representation of "real value". I wouldn't pay over $200 max. for an SX-42 in need of what you say, and MUCH less if cosmetics are a problem. $75-$125 might be a realistic hamfest price for one needing work. Lynn Brock used to have a sscreen for their front panel, but he's phasing out of things, I don't know if he still has the screen or would do a panel, but did a beautiful job.. He did 2 for me 4-5 yrs ago, but I did the painting, he just screened. I'll probably regret this, but.. I've recently worked with a couple of local vendors to get (a) decent quality wet paint that matches the original Halli color pretty well, and (b) a screen-maker who delivers very nice artwork and screening. I've refinished several SX-115 panels, an HT-32, several SX-73's (different color, of course), and a bunch of TMC GPR-90 variants (yet another "light gray"); they turned out very well, and screens are done and on-hand. I could be pursuaded to have screens made for the SX-42, provided there were enough panels to make up a cost-effective batch. My guess: about $150/panel. If anyone's interested, get in touch by email and if there's enough interest, I'll start the ball rolling by getting a panel to the screen-maker for artwork generation. One absolute rule, however: this process is slooooow, as in several months. If you're in a hurry, or easily irritated, find someone else to do the job. Another excellent panel refinisher: Dee Almquist, up in Waynesboro, Virginia.. Never done business with him, but have seen some beautiful work that he's done. 73, John K4OZY On Thu, 5 Apr 2007, Al Parker wrote: > Hi Russ, > The SX-42 is a real nice radio, but just about as hard to work on .. ------------------------------ From: wb3fau@att.net To: Old Tube Radios Subject: SX-42 Date: Thu, 05 Apr 2007 15:23:06 +0000 Message-Id: <040520071523.27817.46151459000A900E00006CA921612436469A0E00CC0D99@att.net> thanks to all who responded to my querry- I will view and check out this copy on Friday. The T-17 has no jack and is not connected to any chassis. If you are talking about the jack that the PL-68 plug on the cord attached to the T-17 plugs into, it also is not 3/8 inch and is not insulated from any chassis. INT WTF. Some explanation is in order- a friend received it from a "club". Original owner [SK] XYL said they could renovate it but not sell it. He was going to sell it to me and give money back to the club. My friend, having seen the labor involved turned it down. Usually a club would just sell something like this...sorry for your time gentlemen, but still interesting info. My real question is this: what happens to the SX-42 how? Surely the SK's XYL won;t throw it out? Seems to me there is a risk of that, if she is having trouble giving it away. Might I ask you to inquire of your friend, so as to prevent the radio getting tossed? Regards, Scott >Sorry for the unless bandwidth- as it turns out, i cannot get the >'42 after all.
