Garland" <4cx250b@muohio.edu> Subject: A Better Mousetrap Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed Hi Gang, I was sorting through a box of long-discontinued germanium transistors the other day, and complained to a friend (Jerry, K8RA) what a pain it was to try and find out the specs and pinouts on them. Some were unmarked, so I had to resort to using a VOM to try and figure out if they were PNP or NPN. Jerry said, "What you need is an M3 Semiconductor Analyzer." It's the greatest thing since sliced bread." I'd never heard of M-Cubed, but I looked up their website, read the specs and shelled out $67 for their Semiconductor Analyzer kit. It came yesterday, and I wired it up this afternoon. Jerry was right: it really is the greatest thing since sliced bread. THis little gadget is a bit larger than a deck of cards. It has one control -- an on/off toggle switch. It also has a backlighted LCD display, and a three different-colored little clip leads. Here are the instructions. Connect the clip leads to a transistor, diode, J-FET, MOSFET, unijunction transistor, SCR, thyrister, or triac, in any order. That's it. Nothing else to do. The display then reads out eveything you want to know about the device being tested. I tried it out on one of my unmarked transistors and it told me that it was an NPN Ge transistor, that the pinout was E-B-C, that the reverse leakage current was 5.5 uA, that the gain Hfe was 31, and that the base-emitter turnon voltage Vbe was .28V. Hook an unmarked diode up to two of the leads and it will tell you whether it is a Si, Ge, or Schottky diode, the forward voltage drop (at specified currents), the reverse leakage, and which lead is the anode and which is the cathode. For FETs, it shows everything you could want to know: P-channel or N-channel, pinchoff voltage, gain, etc. If a device is bad, it will tell you what the problem is. For example if a junction is shorted, it will tell you which pins are shorted and what the resistance. The kit took me about two hours to wire up, but that's because I was trying (unsuccessfully) to work the BS7 DXpedition at the same time. There'e an 11 page user manual that's actually a nice little tutorial on semiconductor parameters. This little gizmo is never going to stray far from my workbench. Why am I posting this? Because I think ingenuity and creativity need to be rewarded. This little company is run by some very clever people. They've got good ideas and they pay attention to details. I hope they sell a million of their testers.. Their website is http://www.m3electronix.com/sa.html 73, Jim Garland W8ZR P.S. I also bought one of their frequency counter/ power meter kits, which Jerry tells me is equally amazing. After I wire it up I'll let you know what I think. ************************* James C. The objective was not marine communications but trans-Pacific point-to-point contact with the cities the Pacific rim. The first transmitter at Building 1 in Bolinas was the standard Marconi Co. rotary spark gap. But when the Radio Corporation of America absorbed the assets of the American Marconi Co. after WWI they replaced the rotary with two Alexanderson alternators of 200kW each. In his famous book "My San Francisco Story of the Waterfront and the Wireless" Richard Johnstone refers to the station as Bolinas High Power. And indeed it was. The long wave voice of these wonderful machines was heard across the ocean, day and night. When I arrived at the Bolinas site in 1972 I remember seeing a large copper plaque on the side of Building 1 proudly proclaiming that Alexanderson alternators dwelled within. The alternators were of course long gone by then. But on my second visit the plaque was gone. Only the threaded studs of its mounting remained, as they do today. Since it was clear that the plaque had been carefully removed I hoped that it was in the hands of a collector who understood its importance. I hoped too that some day that plaque would surface and be returned to its home. That day happened when an email arrived from Steve Kushman of the California Historical Radio Society. He informed me that the plaque was in the possession of History San Jose museum. Monica Tucker of that museum graciously offered the plaque to the MRHS. Today it was delivered to my San Francisco office. It will soon be back at the Bolinas transmitter site... excuse me, at Bolinas High Power. The plaque measures 3ft x 2ft and is massively heavy. It took two of us to move it from the delivery vehicle to my office. The inscription reads: This Station Was Designed and Constructed by the Radio Corporation of America The 200 K.W. High Frequency Alexanderson Generating Equipment was Manufactured and Installed By the General Electric Company The General Engineering and Construction Work Was Performed by the J.C. White Engineering Corporation 1920 Clearly, his was a time when people and corporations were proud of what they did and wanted the world to know of their works. See photos of the plaque and of Building 1 (with an Alexanderson helix base in the foreground) at: http://www.radiomarine.org/Alexanderson/ Please join us in welcoming this historic artifact home after its long absence. I don't have anything that will read SWR on 2 meters but I tried all three (added the Welz) with my 45 watt FM transceiver to a ISOPOLE and got 1.3 on both Heaths and the Welz read 1.5.
