I'm guessing that the circuit is from late 40's ARRL Handbook (my handbooks are still packed away, so can't ck this). It's in a compact 13"W x 8"H x 9"D grey-tan hammertone cabinet, with a hinged lift top, has slightly rounded corners, rubber feet. Build & parts quality, both electrical and mechanical, is excellent. This was obviously a labor of love. Wire dress & solder quality are just lovely, looks like (or is better than!) factory stuff. In spite of compact size, there is no crowding on the chassis. Tube lineup: 6SG7 RF amp, 6K8 mixer, 6SH7 IF amp, 6K7 IF amp, 6SQ7 det/AVC, 6J5 BFO, 6N7 AF amp, 6V6 AF output, 0C3 regulator, 6F6 magic eye. Note: Only tubes included with set are 6F6 & 0C3, that's what it came with. Uses 3 plug-in coils for band change. They have what I remember as the Meissner symbol (a small toothed gear) on top, they have both trimmer (on top) & iron core slug adjustment (on bottom, thru center of the octal socket), so both resonant freq. and coupling are adjustable. The 2nd winding is a link type. Are in a heavy aluminum can, vy easy to take apart. No part number is visible. This is the only coil set that came with the radio. I grid-dipped the antenna coil and it resonates at 6 m! The tubes in this radio are fine for HF but not for VHF, so I'm puzzled by this. Coils may have been home-brewed. However, the coil sets could easily be rewound for HF use as there's plenty of space on the polystyrene form although the vari caps are rather small, abt 15-25 pF each. Ceramic feedthru for antenna connection. Front panel vy neatly layed out & executed. Has classic circular National scale with vernier, matching knob, clear plastic pointer, scale size 4"W x 3"H, with three scales for calibration (untouched), with non-metallic flex coupling to vari caps. Has three high-quality variable caps (one single section & one dual section) for tuning, with metal flex coupling between HF osc cap & other 2 caps. Has three Meissner IF cans (with 2 trimmers each), 2@ 16-6662 and 1@ 16-6663, so IF freq is 455 kHz?? BFO can also by Meissner, no part number visible (it has only 1 trimmer). Built-in 4" Celestion speaker. Has S-meter in addition the magic eye. S-meter has carefully hand-lettered scale. Power supply is missing but 20/20-450 V HV can & VR tube are on the chassis. PS cable with two male 4-pin plugs (like for a type 80 tube) to match radio is included. This radio will clean up to at least good appearance. There are some scratches on the cabinet. Currently it is dusty but almost no rust--this is high desert country. I have not applied power to this radio. $40 OBO plus postage. --John Sehring WB0EQ/VE6 ------------------------------ Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: binary Mime-Version: 1.0 From: John Sehring To: Old Tube Radios Subject: Books for sale Content-Type: text/plain Message-Id: <20070513211148.A6BE02ECE4D@filter6.e-filtering.net> Date: Sun, 13 May 2007 15:11:48 -0600 (MDT) These are a bit "off the beam", but I think there're a lot of programming types on this list, so... Their latest scandal is a bunch of stretched cutters that break up when they get into heavy weather. They cheap out on everything. My most recent personal experience with them resulted in haze gray paint drifted all over my Land Rover in Bayou LaBatre, AL where they were having a cheap and quicky paint job done on one of their cutters. For non-radio folks it's easier to program a simplex channel than to go through the process of setting up many different duplex marine channels that require different offsets. And, they may not have known anything about Marine channels but took the advice of other boaters to "get a radio and tune it to 14.300".... ? In any case they would not be prosecuted for coming up on a marine channel for true "emergency" purposes. I guess the "net result" is what counts. Someone has to be there for those ignorant boaters, and it might as well be retired hams who have the time and patience to do it. Yes, unlicensed boaters do show up there, but every time that I've heard (I used to listen there a lot, but not the last 6 mo.s or so), when someone without ham call letters calls, the net control always says something to the effect of, "if you are not a licensed ham we cannot talk with you unless you are in an emergency situation, is this an emergency?" Occasionally there is no reply, usually it's a "no", and the net control simply says goodby and continues with the net. If it's a "yes" they get a confirmation and get involved. The MM Net does get very involved in true emergency situations, whether with licensed or unlicensed stations, and is often instumental in notifying the Coast Guard and other governmental entities of imminent rescue and life thereatening medical situations. As Perry says, in an emergency situation any station may legally transmit on (almost?) any frequency. By and large unlicensed boaters recognise and respect the proper use of amateur frequencies. 73, Al, W8UT New Bern, NC www.boatanchors.org www.hammarlund.info ----- Original Message ----- From: "provero" > The maritime 14.3 crowd are just another version > of the 10m "free banders". > > Josh, KK1D ----- Original Message ----- From: > > In any case they would not be prosecuted for coming up on a > marine channel for true "emergency" purposes. > > I guess the "net result" is what counts. As readers may recall, I recently reported the recovery of the plaque that was once attached to the outside wall of Building 1 at Bolinas. It announced the presence inside of two Alexanderson alternators of 200kW each. The plaque went missing soon after I saw it in 1972. But last week it was recovered and this weekend it was returned to to BL. See photos of its arrival at: http://www.radiomarine.org/Alexanderson/ Plaque-03.jpg - The plaque has been removed from Service Car 50 and loaded on a hand truck for transfer to safe storage in Building 2A. Plaque-04.jpg - The plaque at rest in the downstairs storeroom. It is resting against two slate electrical panels. And therein lies a tale. Last year I was in Service Car 50, parked at the hardware store in downtown Pt. Reyes Station (near RS, the RCA Pt. Reyes receiving site). Somebody in a pickup truck said, "Hey! You're the radio guy, right?" It hardly seemed worth denying so I admitted it was true. He went on to say that he was doing a remodeling job up the road. He had just removed the deck and found underneath slabs of slate used as stepping stones. Recognizing them as electrical panels, he set them aside. I followed him to the site and sure enough, there they were, one with the Westinghouse data plate still attached. So far we haven't been able to absolutely confirm that they came from RCA. But we have another panel that's almost a twin that we're sure came from RCA. And where else would they have come from? It seems these artifacts have a way of finding their way home... eventually.
