As far as I know, the answer is yes. I have yet to see or hear of an NC-200 that was not so marked (and no hole where the emblem was located). Osterman also notes that these are marked "Silver Anniversary". HOWEVER, neither the 1941 or the 1944 ARRL Handbook ads show the emblem. The 1940 Handbook (publish date 11-39) National ads don't include the NC-200. It is of note that the 1944 ad also lists the speaker as a separate purchase while the 1941 ad lists it as included. Don't have access to the '42 or '43 Handbooks. The NC-200 was introduced in late 1940. Checking out the QSTs for 1940 yields: Inside back cover October 1940 National ad touting their new catalog: "Of course, the big news is the new NC-200 receiver, which we shall not say much about here because it is not to be officially released until next month." The November 1940 issue has a number of dealer ads as well as a two-page spread from National. "A receiver dedicated to the amateur on our twenty-fifth anniversary". The pics show an emblem on the radio in the two-page spread but the ad doesn't mention "Silver Anniversary" in the copy. None of the other ad pics including the large pic on the inside back cover show the emblem. I assume the Handbook ads used that pic. Not mentioning the emblem in November was probably because in the December issue, the inside back cover is done in nice silver and red print "Silver Anniversary NC-200" with the copy "Dedicated to amateurs on the twenty fifth anniversary of their own QST. The 12-40 issue front cover uses the same color scheme because it was the 25th Anniversary edition of the mag and so notes on the cover. I believe that 1939 may indeed have been National's 25th year but they apparently wanted the NC-200 "Silver Anniversary" to be double entendre, therefore 1940. Cool radio. 73 de Rich KB8TAD http://oak.cats.ohiou.edu/~postr/bapix/NC200.html ------------------------------ From: WA1KBQ@aol.com Message-ID: Date: Sun, 27 May 2007 07:46:59 EDT Subject: Re: National NC-200 Silver Anniversary Receiver To: Old Tube Radios MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="-----------------------------1180266418" -------------------------------1180266418 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit The appearance of the NC-200 also marked the departure of James Millen in 1939 who became frustrated with the aging principles who decided to float a stock issue and cash out for retirement. Millen wanted no part of that and took several key employees with him to launch James Millen Inc. In 1954 National was bought by a group of investors headed up by a fellow named Lerner who was affiliated then with Macy's Department store and the company lineup was revamped again as National stole top talent for a reorganization. Just a note regarding heat in the National Doghouse supplies........ The 80 rectifier applies a lot of heat to the xfmr and can capacitor in the Doghouse supplies. Every one I have examined has two holes drilled in the chassis where a heat shield was originally planned. I guess the bean counters at National decided to save money and I have yet to find an original heat shield in place. If you will fabricate a simple aluminum or steel heat shield to mount in those holes, you will greatly reduce the heat damage to the xfmr and cap. I have repaired quite a few of the Doghouse supplies where it was obvious that the heat from the 80 rectifier had dried out the wiring insulation and the heat had aged the other components. It is simple insurance to add, especially if you replace the xfmr and don't want to have to do it again. 73.....Jim W5JI ------------------------------ Message-ID: <465C7B54.8020107@ar88.net> Date: Tue, 29 May 2007 15:13:24 -0400 From: Al Klase MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Old Tube Radios CC: Old Tube Radios Subject: Re: National Doghouse Question Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Freeberg, Scott (STP) wrote: > ..... For a given HP- new motors are smaller and lighter than their older models- less iron, will not stand the overload that an older motor will handle. Applications vary- sometimes there is overload for a few seconds - in different uses. I won't detail this here. GE- [general electric] solves the overload problem in an interesting manner-[in some applications] they put a thermal sensor in the motor- a certain temp reached open the circuit until it cools. I can dip the final, get=20 grid drive, and the loading cap does not increase=20 output. The RF position shown a slight reading at=20 max sensitivity. I have replaced the finals with a new=20 set (they could be bad??- not likely.). The tubes are Russian copies of 6K7, 6H6 and one which I cannot identify. It looks like a metal 6SK7, and is in the circuit were one would expect a mixer or pentagrid converter. If one were to look at the markings in English, it would appear to say "6A7 VIII-61," but that is not correct. The "A" is actually a Russian letter and, in any event is certainly not a 6A7. A drawing of the tube markings is at: http://home.netcom.com/~arc5/russtube.bmp Can anyone tell me the U.S. equivalent of this tube? Thanks! 73 Dave S. ------------------------------ End of BOATANCHORS Digest 4057 ******************************
