Technology changes! Old, bad habits OTOH hang around like unwanted holes in a front panel. Modern CONTROLLED AVALANCHE (look up the term) rectifiers have very tightly controlled characteristics and should not have any Rs and Cs in parallel. The variations in the added Rs and Cs will overwhelm the tolerances in the diodes and the finished product will be worse off than without the additions. You need to read the data sheet for the parts you are using to be certain of what you have and then apply it correctly. Buy new, modern quality parts. If you got them in a coffee can at a swap meet, you are on your own. But there are always exceptions, right? I'm looking at a rectifier board that failed here at work. (CBS TeeVee) There are 95 diodes in series, type RL257. Each has a 4.7M 1/2 watt resistor and 2200pF/1kV ceramic disc cap in parallel. Maybe putting 95 in series is pushing the limits of 'goodness' so they added the "equalizers". Six of these strings convert 3-phase AC to DC. Three amplifiers in parallel then make about 60KW on a UHF channel. High volts is 32 KV at a combined 4.5 amps. The diodes and other things failed when the HV arced. Once I discovered the K2AW rectifier blocks I no longer go through the "series diode " drill and just simply mount the K2AW block on heat sink material which is usually just the chassis. I have never experience a failure with my homebrew equipment using these block rectifiers. If, for any reason, one diode in a series string breaks down (cunducts at its zener voltage) the remaining diodes in the string are exposed to higher peak inverse voltages. If that goes on regularly a domino effect failure may occur. Let's look at an example: A diode in a string experiencing 500 PRV is shunted with a 150K resistor to allow approximately 3 peak mA to flow. If the diode breaks down at 1KV the first question is, where did the 1KV come from? The unavoidble conclusion has to be the diode has ALREADY FAILED. How long do you want to wait before the rectifier string sends up smoke signals? In the first place, old habits die hard. Long ago diodes and caps increased reliability, now they almost always do the opposite. The exception is with special diodes that because of doping or special manufacturing have significant leakage. Also, what you see might not be for the reason you think see it. In the AL12 series amplifiers I used caps across the diodes to prevent a small amount of HV RF ripple on low bands from getting back into the diodes and generating harmonics. So while someone might look at the amp and say, "oh, he needed caps to protect diodes" the truth is entirely different. When I got involved as a consultant with Ameritron/Dentron/Amp Supply they used carbon resistors across electrolytics and diodes. The mortality rate of power supplies was terrible. The carbons across the filter caps were changed to metal film and the resistors across the diodes were removed, and failures dropped to zero. It's actually virtually unheard of to have a diode failure in an AL12 series or even larger commercial amps using 8-10kV supplies that use diode stacks with no shunt components, and that is with a normal 50% margin on diode voltages. Every single stack you buy from K2AW and others are devoid of shunt components inside, as are the rectifier strings used in millions of microwave ovens in the world. I know people do not like to hear things like this when they are in a habit, but the fact is we almost certainly decrease the reliability of a diode stack when we add shunt components. This is especially true when we parallel 250-350 volt rated components with 1000 volt rated semiconductors. The failure mechanism is not punch through of an insulated junction by exceeding a set threshold voltage, it is reverse dissipation. The diodes do much better if each is allowed to seek its own level. It doesn't hurt the part at all, because it isn't stressing a dielectric or barrier with a certain arc-over or punch-through voltage. This is my last shot, Tom. I have applied Ohm's law successfully for many a year now and I have applied it to your assertions that shunt resistors in a diode string reduce reliability of the diodes. Your explanation is devoid of facts and reason. It doesn't wash. Now you assert that, "... The diodes do much better if each is allowed to seek its own level. ...." Level? I didn't know diodes had a level. Are they social climbers? Diodes are either "on" when forward biased, conducting with a junction voltage drop thrown in, or are "off" when reverse biased, with a minute leakage current flowing. Ignoring both of these effects a diode is a perfect one way conductor. It has no "level." The reason equalizing resistors are used with diode strings is to better define the applied reverse voltage. The diodes' individual junction voltages are self defining and are not at issue here. What is at issue here is, what does paralleling diodes with resistors have to do with diode reliability? The answer is NOTHING. The bottom line is modern diode strings that function reliably without equalizing resistors do so because their minute leakages contribute little to upsetting equal voltage distribution which is achived by diode junction capacitance instead. Adding capacitors to shunt RF currents around the diodes makes equal voltage distribution even more sure. So, please, Tom, stop telling everyone that anything made before yesterday is no good and should be thrown in the trash. I for one will use my coffee can diodes and after testing their reverse breakdown voltages build diode strings as I see fit....., with voltage equalizing resistors if needed also. Yes indeed, all the neon bulbs happily glowed while the rectifiers rectified. We replaced some exhausted 8008 mercury rectifiers which used to arc over 50% of the time when I hit the high voltage switch. National NC-101X receiver........$225 plus shipping This is an 11 tube superhet from around 1937 that covers the ham bands as they were in the late 1930's-160, 80, 40, 20 and 10 meters. This radio was introduced in 1937 with a tuning eye. This is a later version which has the s-meter. The original version came from the factory with a tuning eye. This unit is in pretty nice shape considering it is 70 years old. It does have a two additions to the front panel in the form of a toggle switch and a pot in the lower left made by the previous owner. The toggle switch is the ac on/off switch. All of the tubes have been checked and are good. The person who owned it before me replaced all of the wax caps, the electrolytics and many of the resistors too. The radio is working but has an intermittent which will need to be fixed. I did listen to signals on 40 meters CW and SSB before it cut out. You do need an electrodynamic speaker to use this radio. This radio has a high tube count however a number of the tubes are just ballast tubes. The extra tubes were added to the radio to impress the public with the high tube count. This radio covers the AM broadcast band and one short wave band covering 2.2 to 7 MC. The radio is restorable. The wooden case is in reasonably good condition with some veneer missing on the bottom left. The radio is missing several tubes and the knobs.
