When setting up the parameters for the SDR however, I am presented with a number of SDR-IQ-specific parameter questions that I do not really understand for the most part. I was able to get the displays properly operating after a fashion by entering values for the parameters, although I really am unsure what those parameters represent. Has anyone been successful with the SDR-IQ and Linrad, and if so, can you give me an idea of what the SDR parameters represent and how to properly apply them? At least with the hollow state version of this radio (SB-310, which I have) there is a particular adjustment procedure. Basically, you tune for maximum DC voltage measured somewhere and then turn the slug CW or CCW (depends on the band) to decrease the voltage by a stated amount. I have an SB-303 manual-for the ham band version of the radio-so the details might not match. IN some cases, the coil has two slugs, which are separately adjusted. If you have a scope, put the probe near the oscillator coils and see if you get signs of activity on all bands; if not, figure out which slug is which and tune for maximum smoke. Hopefully someone here has the right book and can better help you. The SB-310 is a great radio; I expect the SB-313 is, too. The SWR looked good and the PSI on the bench wasn't bad either but the BMI of the operator was still over the desired limit probably resulting from the BIGMAC factor. This is a mid-1920's five-tube three dial wooden-case radio that tunes most of the BC band. It is missing one knob and I am trying to find some knobs that are sort of period authentic. I have three of those very early knobs that have a white pointer line across the entire knob front. Of the three, one has a metal insert. The other two are bakelite ( or whatever ) entirely. Two knobs have their set screws rusted or otherwise seized in them. I have used "Liquid Wrench" on rusted nuts and bolts when I am working on cars, but is the "Liquid Wrench" safe to use on these old bakelite knobs. You can't find knobs like these everyday, and I do not want to melt the knobs with the "Liquid Wrench". This radio is not really a BA, but your all's answer applies to a Hammarlund SP-600-JX-26 that has been in the mud, and to some other BA's that I am working on. By the way, do any of you classic radio professionals have a schematic for this old Airline? I did it the hard way and drew one; that is really the hard way!! Phenolic (Bakelite) is generally immune to the effects of oil. Liquied Wrench should not cause you problems. After removing the set screw use compressed air to remove the oil from the knob interiors. You could also use alcohol but only with caution because strong solvents will dull the surface sheen of the phenolic. Carnuba wax will shine them up if dull looking. Kiwi shoe polish can help with discoloration. Back in 1990 – 1991 a very brave amateur radio operator named Abdul-Jabbar Ma’rafi, 9K2DZ, became literally the last voice from Kuwait. When Saddam Hussein and the Iraqi army invaded his country, Abdul remained on the ham radio at his peril right under the nose of the invaders. He was able to report many of the atrocities committed by the Iraqis as well as reporting troop movements and warnings to coalition forces. After Saddam was driven out, Abdul remained at work relaying many hundreds of health and welfare messages to Kuwaiti family members in the free world awaiting word from loved ones in the war torn country. The following video documents the activities of this courageous ham operator during his country’s darkest hour. It is also a testament to the power of amateur radio. Our disaster might not be an invasion by a blood crazed dictator, but after hurricane Katrina and the Tennessee tornadoes of April 2006, we have to admit that our very own disaster lurks right around the corner. We must be prepared. --Thomas Hamilton This video is reproduced with the direct permission of executive producer,Frank Moore, WA1URA, and WANE – TV. 1st Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dG4jvV9ngWU 2nd Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dB8E-1zi7c&mode=related&search= 3rd Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJ_Ky7yQwb8&mode=related&search= -- Regards, Jerry Proc E-mail: jerry7proc@yahoo.com Be smarter than spam.
