I live a life vicariously on BA, for we live in a small home on a city lot here in Albuquerque; small bench in the garage, one room for my ham station and the MAC.... and a few dumpy antennas in the yard (but I did work HS in Bangkok the other morning on 20 cw.) And I've recently learned more about resistor types than I'll probably ever need! Meantime, this S38D arrived from an eBay seller a few days ago, in fair shape, and it does need a thorough cleaning, etc. It receives on all bands, no audio hum, etc. as the seller stated. The bandswitch and volume control need cleaning, the cabinet needs cleaning, the rubber feet need replacement. The fiberboard back and bottom are in good shape. What I'm looking for is a schematic copy and an operating manual copy, printed out or emailed to me; all I've been able to find by GOOGLING are collections of data for hundreds of radios on a disc for $30 or so, which is more than I paid for the radio, and much more than I need. Will gladly swap for this info with some good green chile salsa from here in Albuquerque, or if you prefer, postage and $ for your time to copy, though I'd prefer the data be sent as an attachment to an email. I'd settle for just a readable schematic and the alignment procedure if the operating manual is not available. If you can help, please contact me off the reflector. Hi Herb! Why not download one for free from the BoatAnchor Manual Archive and print it out yourself? No salsa needed! (I hope they make better Salsa in Albuquerque than I got the last time I was in Phoenix! To be honest, I really prefer a good tomatillo salsa anyway!) I see they've got a manual for the S-38D, free for the downloading, at: ftp://bama.sbc.edu/downloads/hallicra/s38d/ (Main entrance here: http://bama.sbc.edu/ ) Just download the PDF copy - the DejuVu viewer hasn't ever worked right for me. If you have trouble, let me know and I'll download and send to you on CD ROM... I had an S-38C once. I still may have it, but I've moved several times and *still* haven't unpacked all the BA's even though I've lived in this house for four years. Six or seven responses to my query on the S38D from the BA good guys, overnight! I truly appreciate all your helping hands with a schematic and an operating manual for this receiver. I have enough, so please don't bother sending any more. Armed with these, I'm ready to dig in and clean up this fine rx. For years I've had a collection of parts needed to build a 1 or 2 tube (6CL6s) transmitter, xtal controlled for 40 and 20 cw-I have a handful of xtals, plug in coil forms, etc... and a neat can from a Hormel's ham for the chassis. What could be neater than to use this can for the chassis to build a true 'ham' transmitter! And that's why I bought the S38D; my future 'ham' rig just wouldn't look good with my Yaesu transceiver . Thanks again; I'll probably wait until fall to build the transmitter, as it's been in the high 90s-100s here and the garage (workbench) is a cooker as you can imagine. BTW: Marty suggested I pair the receiver with a BC-610. I don't think so, though that was a fine rig; I operated one in MARS long ago... but a nice thought. And yes, John, our salsa is MUCH better than almost anyplace else, as is our green chili stew; often, to prevent withdrawal symptoms, we cart some along when we leave town! The Simpson has separate AM and FM signal generators and a crystal controlled 5 MHz standard. Its scope, viewed via a mirror at the top, is used to display Lissajous patterns that allow for very accurate generator settings as well as the usual scope inputs. I recently repaired such a beast for another collector, not a simple task. It's fun to watch the scope as the signal generator approaches a harmonic of the crystal standard and finally hits it exactly. The Simpson was used to align early TV sets. 73 de Rich KB8TAD At 7:08 PM -0400 7/10/07, john wrote: >Too cool for words... > >http://tinyurl.com/2md8pk ------------------------------ Message-ID: <46943807.4030304@mindspring.com> Date: Tue, 10 Jul 2007 21:53:11 -0400 From: Garey Barrell MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Old Tube Radios Subject: Re: Someone in Wisconsin buy this thing! The fast-setting stuff is convenient, but I've used it mostly for potting connectors and for light duty bonding. JB Weld, which is very strong, seems to be an epoxy-based formulation, and if I remember right has a two hour working time. In an earlier life, I used Sty-cast epoxy, which was slow-setting but so hard it couldn't even be machined or drilled. It was like glass and would break tool bits. Rosenthal Sent: Wednesday, July 11, 2007 8:04 AM To: Old Tube Radios Subject: Strength of epoxy Today's NYT has an article about a fatal accident in Boston's "Big Dig" tunnel last year because the wrong epoxy was used: ---------- 1, WASHINGTON, July 10 - The ceiling collapsed in one of Boston's Big Dig tunnels a year ago, killing one woman, because builders used the wrong epoxy to hold the anchor bolts in place, ----------- 2, The board tested both formulations of epoxy available from (...) and found that the "standard set" type worked fine, but within 80 days, all the samples using the "fast set" formulation had failed. ---------- We who dabble often use epoxy; my choice has been the 'fast set gel' up to now. Not for bridges, of course, but used for holding small pieces of a project in place, repairing age-old components, etc. Impatience is the reason for my using the fast set, but I think I'll mend my ways (ahem) and return to the regular set epoxy. Perhaps one of then test tube gang may wish to weigh in on this matter.
