I've tried this twice. It seems that auto-to-110VAC inverters are built in several different ways. The two I tried were the cheapie "WallyWorld" lighter plug type. I first used a bridge rectifier on the output and they did not like that a bit. Turns out that the output of these inverters is single-ended. The "neutral" blade of the output is common with the negative "ground" side of the input connection. This being the case, only a half-wave rectifier worked. I used one of these to power my Australian AR-8 and it worked fine, but this would not be useful on any receiver that requires a floating B-. The outputs of the DC/DC converters I have are isolated, so can be configured to provide floating B-, needed for receivers like the BC-348 and BC-474, and for many 1920s and 1930s design transmitters. Perhaps other inverters are isolated; I haven't tried any others so far. 73 Dave S. ------------------------------ Message-Id: <200707260235.l6Q2ZTxU003171@mail17.syd.optusnet.com.au> Content-Type: text/plain Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: binary Mime-Version: 1.0 From: brianclarke01@optusnet.com.au To: Old Tube Radios Date: Thu, 26 Jul 2007 12:35:29 +1000 Subject: RE: Question: B & K 707 Tube Tester Hi Mike, I met a dual, non-linear Colvern variable wire-wound resistor in a commercial Wien bridge oscillator. The pot was motor driven, I suspect for testing room resonances, or for designing loudspeaker components. The wire was broken in one of the banks - because it was wire-wound, it was relatively easy to repair. Those of you who know what is required for joining nichrome wire, will understand my little joke. So, you could try Colvern - but this oscillator was old when I repaired it 30 years ago. 73 de Brian, VK2GCE ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Jul 2007 07:54:35 -0400 (EDT) From: stuck in 50s Message-Id: <200707261154.l6QBsZs4023213@fracas.netboobie.org> To: Old Tube Radios Subject: Re: More Russki Radio... The pot is described as "1K Ohm 5 Watt W.W. Pot (Spec. >Taper)". ...Is it possible to have a wire wound pot that is not a linear taper? Mike and other Anchorites, It certainly is possible. Thanks to Brian for describing a 5 watt wire wound pot that I'd never heard of before that has different segments of wire windings. Enter the lore of General Radio: GR used many wire wound pots and became most expert at developing odd kinds of high precision. Mostly they were not intended for high power dissipation (as in the 2 and 5 watt kinds we usually find) but were intended as prime measuring elements in bridge instruments. Some of their pots were made in this way: a flat, thin, card of insulating material was wound with resistance wire, then wrapped around the phenolic body of the pot which had the wiper, shaft, mounting parts, and the electrical connection posts. To make a linear pot, the card was a rectangle of uniform width. To make, say, a logarithmic taper, the card had a non-uniform width such that length of wire in each turn varied from end to end. Some mathematics that was routine for the folks at GR produced the needed physical shapes of the card. No doubt some careful tooling of cams or master taper forms was involved in making the machines upon which the cards were produced. One example is the output voltage setting pot of the fabled 1001A Standard Signal Generator. There are two pots on one shaft that operate in unison to produce a more or less linear output voltage function, all at a constant impedance (50 ohms, I think, at the pot.) Some times, taps were added at the right spot as the card was wound. One example is the GR 1650B RLC bridge main RLC potentiometer. It has a tap that is connected to a capacitor to compensate for frequency effects, making the instrument more accurate at higher (audio) frequencies than the predecessor instruments. These instruments also have a mechanical correcting mechanism that advances or retards the wiper position from the shaft position by a small, adjustable, amount. Part of the alignment procedure is to set the adjustments at 6 or 8 spots in the pot's travel to bring the dial calibration within specifications. Back to "tube testers": I have a Weston "Vacuum Tube Analyzer" that is fairly ancient (late 1930's I think). It's about the least convenient thing to use for testing tubes that I've seen, since you have to make all connections to the tube under test with plug-in banana ended jumpers, and set every element voltage manually. The thing has about the biggest wire-wound pots I've seen. Two of them are about 4 inches in diameter. I have not yet gotten it restored and running, but I am hoping that none of the pots are of "Spec Taper" sort. There is a moderate amount of corrosion on the pots and I may well find one or more of them open since these are fairly high resistance units. Sooo many projects, sooo little time! Some of the caps are small value negative temperature units. Others seem to be 50 volt parts with large values. In any case, I found in there a small N750 cap that I needed to repair an SX-88 I'm working on. It was close enough to do the job. The tiny original dogbone cap was sintered to obscurity from a leakage. That fried the 1k B+ decoupling cap into two pieces. The radio is much happier now with a couple of new parts. I had no idea 40 years ago that I could use one of those parts to fix a period radio. I've sold over 100 at the last two TRW swapmeets, but still have a lot left including one 9 pin plug (rare!) and a lot of 11 pin sockets & plugs as well as the hoods for them. I also have tons of other stuff such as variable capacitors, ceramic tube caps, all sizes, etc. Too much stuff to try to list but if you need something old and scarce, I may just have it tucked away someplace. I found two of the Jones 8 pin plugs but no sockets for our Canadian ham. I have a lot more Jones stuff, 2, 3, 4 6, 10 pins and even some of the bigger stuff. Even have a few of the old military canon connectors around. So email me what you need and I will try to see if it is available. But give me time to check it out. I'm 75 yrs young and my kids tell me to get rid of this junk so they don't have to, one of these days. On 1 Dec 2007, I will have been a ham for 50 yrs.
