I joined before Phil Porch hosted it, Back then, it was nostalgia radio. The evil SS stuff that concealed its functions behind some many-legged bug offered no chance to go in and repair something with only a knowledge of basic electronics. Well, not always so basic. Those were the days of Stan Griffiths, Boatanchor Bob, Barry Ornitz and numerous others who enlightened those of us groping in the dark for ways to fix the stuff we'd found at hamfests and Internet lists. There was a man who was interested in RME equipment who was a fountain of knowledge. I'll think of his name as soon as I hit the 'send' button. Time has marched on, and the original oracles have tired of answering our repetitious questions, as if we had no skills at reading history. Interests change, too. The original nostalgic lust has resulted in a basement full of projects that I'll never get to. Most of the heavy stuff is gone. This list helped keep me going when out-of-sight management closed our successful business in 1999. Strange, that murdering individuals is despised, but murdering companies is just competition. I still read the list, and occasionally contribute when a new subject comes up. Glad to see that grounding and GFCIs haven't been rehashed lately. Many thanks to Jim, who started it, and Jack, who managed it for many years with only a few Jack Attacks. I signed on in early 1994. Used a Compaq 386SX that ran at 33Mhz. I upgraded that PC to a 486SX 100 with a Trinity Software upgrade board. I had a problem with the board running at 133Mhz (er Mcs here) that often outran the audio and video card. Had to keep resetting it. I remember one of the founders Jim was from GA and was here settling his family estate and finally QSYed to California. He was a K4I something. I sold him a shinny P&H linear (it has a chrome cover) to go with his SBE 34. Plenty of boatanchors have passed thru my shack since then gone but remembered included several HQ-170's, two SR-150's, a Lafayette version of the DX-60 and a nice Lafayette VFO, a grand SR-2000 with PS and HA-20 (real dual RX), Several Clegg RX;s and a Thor 6, at least two complete Elmac stations, A Galaxy GT-550, a Henry 2KD-2, A Viking II CD (with restricted audio), a Pierson RX, and several National RX's. I still have an HQ-120 modified by the last Hammarlund Engineer at Mars Hill, a HQ-129X, a Gonset G-76 tuned up at K9STH's, a Elmac A-54H with 40 meters added, a Heath SB-10, A Heath HV Bench supply, a Heath TC-2 tube tester, several Heath SWR bridges, 2 Tymeter Clocks, and A Morrow CM-1 Broadcast RX to be mated with a Regency ATC-1 converter (I am looking for the old delco auto radio plugs). Makes it a pain in the arse to plug in "subs" with = differing heater currents! That was rather stupid engineering! Anyway the 6AH6 seemed to work great in my old R4A receiver or was it = the T4X transmitter? The point is, they're our decisions to make. Others get to second guess....... No disrespect intended, Dennis, but I worked for engineers for 25+ years and I know how much freedom they had and it wasn't much. If the choices didn't fit management's programs the door wasn't very far away. Engineering is more a pursuit of meeting product specifications (including costs) and less of re-inventing wheels. That's why forty year old bridges fall down and lemons don't only grow on trees. It's damn good engineers that can come out on top of that!
