As one who will be there as part of the activities, I can't think of any special BA activities, except for the LST325 Radio Room being active (big black wrinkle BA's, for sure) The MVPA National Convention will be there simultaneously and you will probably see green radios in their big flea market, along with 100+ vehicles... On a typical coil that has a overall Q of 140 to 150-----lowering the Q value by 10 to 15 points will just not effect the overall receiver performance enough to worry about. However, instead of completely coating the coils I just applied three vertical strips, approximately 1/8 inch wide spaced evenly around the coils using fingernail polish to hold the windings in place. We used to say " Don't sweat the small stuff" and get on with the mission. 73 breck k4che Message ----- From: "J. Paper Tape "Wheel" as KSM Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Since almost the beginning of maritime Morse communications coast stations have sent the "wheel" whenever they were not engaged in sending and receiving messages. The wheel sent a repeating message stating that the station was open for business and listening for ships. The original wheels were rotating disks with notches used to key the Morse message. Some stations used amazing contraptions of motors, shafts, gears and microswitches to perform the task. One of these has been preserved at WLO. Later, punched paper tape was used to send the wheel and also longer prepared messages like weather and press. Kleinschmidt was the preferred brand of punch. These looked something like typewriters and were housed in beautiful rosewood cases. Some had Teletype name plates but were invariably referred to as the "Klein". The tapes were read by keying heads made my Boehme, Creed and others. In more modern times the wheel was generated by an electronic keyboard. Wheels are rarely heard today. HLO, HLW and other coast stations in Korea still hold forth along with XSG in China. And of course the KSM wheel may be heard every Saturday. The MRHS has several Kleinschmidts and Boehmes in inventory. Recently we had the great good fortune to find someone not only willing but qualified to work on these machines for us. One by one we are passing them through his hands. As of this Saturday, 4 July, a newly overhauled Klein and a Boehme were brought to KSM and put into service. These will be used to send the KPH wheel on Night of Nights X on Sunday 12 July. Today we used them to send the KSM wheel to test the system. They both worked like a charm. You can see them in operation in a YouTube video at the URL below. When making the loop of tape for the wheel, custom and tradition demand that LePages mucilage be used to join the two ends. The problem is that LePages has not made the needed item for a decade and more. We have one bottle of the original KPH LePages mucilage left. But today we also took delivery of two new bottles of mucilage that we had to import from Canada! SPECIAL REQUEST: The other expendable we need besides mucilage is the paper tape used by the system. Actually, we have a lot on hand. But it is old and brittle and tends to break when drawn through the Klein. If anyone can lead us to the paper tape we need or to a company that is willing to take on a special order we would be very grateful. The tape is 15/32" wide on a 2" hub. Now... on to the video. First thing; Find out what caused the high plate current that opened the winding. Look for a leaking coupling cap from the previous stage, forward-biasing the tube. That's most common, but there can be other causes. If you don't find the reason it opened, a replacement will likely open as well. ------------------------------ Message-ID: <4A5151AE.8020608@tbc.net> Date: Sun, 05 Jul 2009 20:21:50 -0500 From: Steve Berg MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Old Tube Radios Cc: Old Tube Radios Subject: Re: New Video! Paper Tape "Wheel" as KSM Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit When I was going to high school, a friend from our church got several of us summer jobs working there at Kleinschmidt there in Deerfield, Illinois. I should probably put "working" in quotation marks. The fellow who got me the job had been an engineer at National Radio years before and had been a ham since his younger days. What amazed me was how little work actually was done there. My job was to make copies of all necessary drawings and schematics for the test lab. My boss spent most of his time working on his American Legion stuff. I dutifully learned how to copy blue prints, and also made copies of the off-color drawings made by are draftsman. There was a bank of paper tape readers clattering away right outside our office, and the noise was deafening. There were also numerous mechanical teleprinters being built and tested, and I got to work a bit with some sort of early computer that you programmed with jumpers to send out test messages in Baudot code. I was there when they developed their first high speed drum based printer. They had an experimental model that had a solenoid for every space on the printed line, and there was a rotating cylinder behind the paper. The solenoids would strike at the appropriate time to type a letter using an inked ribbon. I think it took no more than 3 drum revolutions to print an entire line. It was the first time I ever saw a high speed line printer. This is probably about 1964-65 time frame. Some of the guys there were hams, and I bought a Clegg 99er from one after I got my Tech license. I was not surprised to hear that they went out of business, but a lot of the things they did there were interesting, especially to a youngster like me. There was a great stress on durability, and it is not surprising that a lot of what they made is still working. The founder of the company not only designed teleprinters, but also a sort of automatic fly fishing reel. 73, Steve WA9JML Richard Dillman wrote: > Since almost the beginning of maritime Morse communications coast stations have sent the "wheel" whenever they were not engaged in sending and receiving messages. > > The wheel sent a repeating message stating that the station was open for business and listening for ships. I've still got a bottle on the "Potions" shelf, but IIRC, it's just polystyrene dissolved on toluene, so you can make your own by dissolving packing noodles. Never measured the effect on "Q." Hard to imagine those old C-130 monsters are still flying.... my P2V squadron was co-based with a bunch of them in Japan, and we had to clear the runway of pterodactyls before takeoff. Never measured the effect on "Q." Polystyrene, of all the plastics used in electronics, has the lowest dielectric loss and least temperature coeficient. That's why it's used in RF capacitors. Poly's con is its low melting temperature and poor solvent resistance. Nothing cheaper for use in consumer products. Use only white packing noodles to make dope, the colored "anti-static" noodles have additives that make it lossy. > ...Hard to imagine those old C-130 monsters are still flying.... The oldsters are constantly being overhauled and upgraded. The C-130J is currently in production. The C-130 will probably outlast the DC-3/C-47.
