From: Jeramy Ross To: Old Tube Radios Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Hello to the list, I took the plunge... I sold off all of my SS gear in hopes to raise funds for a great, first BA setup for my shack. Well, that's where I stand... with little progress, so I am hoping to solicit help from you all. I am looking for a great boatanchor setup that covers 80-10 (I don't have room for a decent 160M antenna on my lot), does CW and SSB (AM is always a plus), and is easily maintained by a beginner in the BA world while providing a great setup that this said beginner (ME) can jump in and start using right away. Due to many different, complicated circumstances, I can't handle a fixer-upper right now. Oh, and the most important thing: the whole setup must fall within a paltry $550 budget. So, I'm asking for suggestions, help in locating, or flat out offers of equipment setups that you may no longer need, and is just taking up room/in your way. All help is much appreciated!! I remember Shelton W5DQK using the B&W 5100S and a 75A3 and doing very well in the ARRL Phone (back when that meant AM) SS. The 1956 or 57 write up showed pictures of three hams (W5DQK was one) that titled them "Masterful men with microphones." The only processing back then was to use a mic like the D-104 and perhaps the 6AL5 clipper that Bill Orr liked to use in his audio drivers. My first rig as a General was a HQ-110, DX-35/VF-1 and WRL Universal Modulator. My dad and I got into building (with help from master builders W5KHB and W5DYJ. The results was pictured years ago on the cover of the April 1997 Electric Radio. I borrowed a DX-100 while we built and assembled the station. Another great AM transmitter. The biggest obstacles to overcome were the heavy QRM on 75 or 20 AM. The Hi-Fi or broadcast audio just would not make it through. 73 Dave K4JRB ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ed Zeranski" To: "Old Tube Radios" Sent: Tuesday, June 01, 2010 9:37 PM Subject: RE: Looking for my first true BA setup... >I have 'relatively' modern gear as well as a grunch of BA. It is now complete and working except for the ohms adjust... Unfortunately Triplett no longer sells replacement parts for the older instruments, and the company (Bigelow Electronics in Bluffton) that acquired the inventory has none either. I've gone through all the electronics suppliers I can find and no one has the exact trimpot, which is mechanically required to fit the knob and bracket. My junkbox had the identical pot but in 5 Meg which is useless. Does anyone have a 20K one? I replaced worn 7 and 9 pin sockets (a tedious but straightforward job), some missing screws, etc., and now it seems to work fine. It was missing the tube data manual, but I downloaded one and am having it printed and spiral bound. The TV-7a was missing the fuse bulb and also the "short" bulb, and I don't know what the bulb specs are. Could someone enlighten me? I put a 12V auto taillight bulb from my junkbox in the "fuse" socket and it seems to work okay, but I'd like to use the proper bulb. I'm guessing it's a 6V bulb, but that's just a guess. Don't have any idea about the other one. I haven't messed with any of the calibration pots, but I've tested a few tubes and the readings seem reasonable. The TV-7a sure is easier to use than my TV-2b!
