For example from www.linear.com and www.maxim-ic.com They have a accuracy well in the 2% range and can be tuned with a little resistor 1%. Maxim sells a 32768Hz variant - crystal controlled. They're all digital ouput! Building a 32KHz oscillator with a clock crystal and having sinus output is really simple with CMOS buffers. You can mix the signal with RF getting an IF somewhere. I recently enrolled in an electronics program at the community college to try to change that. Unfortunately, there are no rf/antenna/wireless related courses (sadly the wireless program was cancelled last year). What kinds of general electronics classes (or other type) will best help me understand radio electronics? This quarter I took DC circuits. Next quarter will be solid state. I'll take an AC principles course later. While the local university has electrical engineering courses, they don't teach them at night, so I'm limited to what the community colleges can offer. They are nothing more than very thin AT crystals (in the center of a larger, thicker blank) and therefore have the normal AT cut characteristics. The reference you give below is a general datasheet from the manufacturer. However, when crystals are manufactured they are made to a specific requirement with regard to what is called "load". This would have been at the request of the Engineer ordering the crystals. As explained in the paper I referenced, crystals can be used either in a parallel resonance mode or a series resonance mode. Any crystal can be operated in either mode (any crystal can also be operated in one of its overtone modes - I have done this), but to get the frequency that it was manufactured for (and marked) you have to operate it in the mode it was made for. Therefore, if you expect to get the frequency on the crystal, you have to operate it in the correct mode. Just looking at the crystal, you can not tell for which mode or load capacitance it was made. If you put a crystal in an oscillator which runs the crystal in series mode and the frequency is too low, then it was made for parallel operation and needs a parallel type circuit like the Collpits. If a crystal is put into a parallel mode circuit and it can't be brought down to the marked frequency, then it is a series mode crystal. If I recall, the Pierce operates the crystal in series mode. For reference, if I recall the difference between the parallel mode frequency and series mode frequency is around 200-300 ppm. for fundamental crystals in the 1-30 MHz range. For lower frequency crystals it is common to specify in the range of 20-32 Pf load for parallel mode operation. There is no analogous "value" for a series operated crystal...just saying "series" is enough. Another consideration not mentioned in the overview paper that I reference is that of power dissipation. Putting too much energy into the crystal will heat the material and cause frequency drift. I tend to avoid imported tools, with a few notable exceptions. I've found that the long-term quality just isn't there, notably in the junk we get from China and Taiwan. Buying US-made stuff is a bit pricier, but it's a far better long-term investment. Some of the names I go for are: Bondhus (Allen wrenches), Wiha (regular and Torx screwdrivers, west German import, great stuff!), Cooper Tools (US-based, formerly known as Xcelite) and, for power tools such as drills, saws, etc., DeWalt. As for test gear, I could probably write a book. At the very least, you're going to need a good multimeter (Fluke 87 series is my personal favorite), probably a small bench power supply (or a large one, if you plan to run mobile gear on said bench). As your skill level grows, you will likely find that you need more sophisticated stuff: Oscilloscope, signal generator, modulation analyzer, spectrum analyzer, LC meter, etc. I could write a book on picking some of those, especially O- scopes. For now, suffice to say that you can get an awfully good 'scope for the $$ by going for older Tektronix equipment. Some favorites of mine are the 7000 series (7603, 7704, 7904, 7104) and their associated plug-ins for lab use. For portable (well, luggable anyway) use, have a look at the 465, 475, 485, 224x series, or the 246x series. One excellent source of Tektronix information is the TekScopes group on Yahoo. I've been a member for years. You're off to a wonderful start on a fascinating hobby. (For example, pure water is virtually lossless at DC and low frequency, but very lossy at HF.) And in order to get a decent representation of ground, you also have to know its dielectric constant. The only reasonably accurate method I know of to make these measurements is a system using a buried transmission line, called an OWL tester. I've never seen or used one, just read some papers where it was used. If your need is for an NEC model, you should realize that the skin depth of current in soil in the HF range is on the order of 10 - 20 feet, meaning that significant current exists to well below this depth. Soil is seldom homogeneous, so to make an accurate representation of real soil, you'd have to test the soil at various depths down to perhaps 30 - 50 feet or so, then make up some sort of average value for the program to use. I don't believe any single average value will really be a good representation of a typical stratified ground. So the bottom line is that even if you could accurately measure the surface soil conductivity, you wouldn't have enough information for an accurate model. And in fact, even if you could measure the conductivity and dielectric constant to a great depth, the model still wouldn't be very good because of its assumption that the soil is homogeneous. About the best you can do with currently available software is to estimate the best and worst likely soil characteristics which might occur from the surface to a few tens of feet depth. Run simulations with both. The antenna performance will probably end up somewhere between the results of the two. Even that isn't guaranteed, though, since any single value probably isn't adequate to represent a stratified ground. Ground modeling is the weak point of all NEC-type programs. I haven't used that particular spectrum analyzer, but I've used similar ones. Let's deal with the first two terms: 0.01% of center frequency ( 300 MHz x .0001 = 30 KHz ) + 5% of frequency span ( 500 KHz x .05 = 25 KHz ) = 55 KHz Note: The catalog states that spans <10 MHz have 5% accuracy, not 2%. This means that the readout may be 55 KHz off and still be within tolerances. Added to this is the term: 5 x N MHz. What this is isn't explained in the catalog, but there are other things which affect the accuracy which may be included in this term. i.e.: timebase accuracy/stability, readout precision and method of digitization. Timebase accuracy (0.007%) and digitization (span/intervals) are probably included in the first two terms. The last term might be concerned with the frequency displays. Marker readout precision is a function of the number of significant digits in the display. The display is essentially a frequency counter and they typically are affected by the time base and have an uncertainty of +/- one on the least significant digit. i.e.: If the display shows 300, it may be 299 to 301. (3.33% error) If the display shows 300.0, it may be 299.9 to 300.1. (0.333% error) If the display shows 300.00, it may be 299.99 to 300.01. (0.0333% error) ... and so on.
