Years ago when the internet was in its infancy just about any site would add your site as a link from theirs. In return you would do the same. But now it has come to NO-LINKS. Not even in the forums. I have had a website located on tripod for about 9 years over those nine years I had a link to qrz dot com That site received over a million hits. And many users went from that site to qrz and on-to Icomamerica dot com. I have always supported Icom. They have never given a link on their site to mine. I have always supported qrz. But of course he(AA7BQ) never put a link on his site to mine. Well you may say that "I never asked". And that is true. But recently I have noticed he has been deleting my posts. ALL OF THEM. He never contacted me telling me why. AA7BQ just deleted them. I build CIV cables and sell a few of them every week to amateur operators who want them. When I posted one on his site. I found he deleted the post soon after it was placed there. My beliefs are. 1. QRZ AKA AA7BQ no longer has the amateur radio attitude. 2. AA7BQ has gone fully commercial but calls his site "The Ham Radio Super Site" 3. AA7BQ does not have your best interest in mind. I can also prove what I am writing here. For one if he claims he is nothing but a commercial site then why does he ask for donations? If he is not a commercial site than why will he not allow me to post my CIV cables on his site? That takes care of number 2 Now for number 1 and 3. If some one knows the truth about something but keeps it from you he is a liar. No mater how you put it, he is a liar. On the QRZ site Fred is there to help you renew your license. Or so he leads you to believe so. He charges you for it. Mr. Lloyd has never revealed it to any amateurs that you can renew your license or do an address change at the fcc.gov web site for FREE. Yes TOTAL FREE at the FCC web site. The forms at the FCC web site or no harder to fill out than his. His CD. He charges 24.95 plus tax and shipping. On that CD is data he obtained from the FCC and got it for FREE, he sales it to you. Also he has software, created by programmers like MYSELF. And MODS that have been made available from the manufactures and other HAMS like ME! I have been contributing to Amateur Radio community for greater than 10 years, and have received very little for software I created. Never complained when it was copied. I have performed and created several of the MODS for various transceivers. Never asked a penny for it. I never commercialized HAM RADIO. And NEVER took money from some one for something they could get FREE else where. I am sure many of you would like to ask me "what I am going to do about it?" Here is my answer. I have created an open forum on my web site http://www.n9zle.com/forum/ There you can post a link to your own site even if it is a commercial site. You can post any ham radio equipment you have for sell on the site. You can do a callsign lookup at my site from the FCC database, not that stupid qrz thing. I will soon put together an open source database that I will sell for the price of the CD plus the true cost of shipping. About two bucks total. Once you install the database on your system, you will be able to download updates for FREE. I will make drivers available to programmers to access the database in several different languages and operating systems. I will also attempt to make the database available on the internet for FREE to download. I only ask for a little help from other HAMS like myself. I need a few elmers that are willing to moderate some of the forums. It is easy and you will find it fun. You can build a step-up or flyback with the LM3478. Tough to solder though, it's a TSSOP package. Don't know what current you need but just pick a suitable FET. For 6V I'd use a buck regulator instead of wasting 50% of the energy in a series regulator. Let's begin by assuming that all antennas are perfectly efficient. That is, all power applied to them is radiated and none turned to heat. This assumption is a valid one for most antennas of a reasonable size in terms of wavelength. For other antennas, the assumption is useful because it separates loss, which can be modified by construction, materials, and other factors, from more fundamental phenomena which can't. Given that assumption, the first important point is that no antenna can have a gain lower than 0 dBi (the gain of an isotropic antenna) in its most favored direction. If it did have a gain lower than 0 dBi in some direction, it would have to have a gain higher than 0 dBi in some other, because the only way gain can be increased in a perfectly efficient antenna is by robbing radiation in one direction in order to increase it in another. The next important point is that a thin half wave dipole in free space has a gain of about 2.15 dBi. If you make the dipole shorter, the gain decreases slightly due to a change in the current distribution. When the dipole gets vanishingly short, the gain has dropped to 1.76 dBi. In practice, the loss increases dramatically when a dipole is made very short in terms of wavelength, so this gain can't be achieved in real life. However, the loss depends on construction, materials, and other factors which can be controlled to minimize loss when needed. The gain of a lossless quarter wave dipole in free space is about 1.84 dBi. The loss of a real quarter wave dipole can usually be made negligible, although attention also has to be paid to matching network components to keep the system loss low. Over a perfect ground plane of infinite extent, the gains of antennas typically increase by about 3 dB compared to free space. In the case of a free space dipole vs. a quarter wavelength antenna over a perfect ground plane, the difference is exactly 3 dB. This is because they have exactly the same radiation pattern (except of course, that the half pattern of the vertical below the ground plane is missing), but the same amount of power is being concentrated in half the volume. Consequently, the gain of a 1/4 wave vertical over a perfect and infinite ground plane is about 5.15 dBi. This also can't be achieved in practice because there isn't any such thing as a perfect ground plane of infinite extent. You can come close if working over salt water, but nowhere near if the ground plane is dirt. This would be something like a 24VAC center-tapped transformer turned backwards with a multivibrator drive of the secondary at 50-60Hz and the usual primary is rectified and capacitor filtered to produce the 90V. Since the reflected current is only about 1/2A, you can then feedback the rectified HV to drive an error amp that regulates the center tap down to 9V or so. Find a dud power supply for free at computer shops/dumpsters/rubbish tips/roadside etc. Salvage the TL494 integrated circuit that can be found in many computer power supplies. In the few car phone chargers that I opened, the IC was a MC34063 and the schematic was very similar to that shown in figure 10 Just change R1 or R2 slightly so that you get 6 Volts out. You may have to check/change the value of resistor Rsc to be closer to that shown in figure 10 You might even get away with not changing the inductor. Try it and see if the original inductor works well enough for you. A ton of reading, bits and pieces for free or dirt cheap. What a great hobby, this is James, eh! I am having trouble tracing and verifying the components of the unit. The rest of the manual is rather good in DjVu format. The owner has a reproduction manual on order and we hope it has a better schematic. In the mean time I would like to get started and order caps, resistors, etc. Could a kind soul please email me a copy of the schematic? Also my parts list resistor section starts with R165. There seems to be a missing BAMA page in between pages 43 and 44. Also, is there a better forum for such a request? All transmission lines transform impedances the same, regardless of construction. However, the impedance seen at the input of an integral number of half wavelengths of real transmission line won't equal the load impedance, because of line loss. The error will be small if the load impedance is about the same as the line Z0. But if they're quite different, even a small amount of loss will change the input impedance a significant amount. If the other one still plays be grateful for that. If it's the same model or nearly the same keep it. Even if the finish is beyond repair some day you might be really thankful to be able to scavenge its tone generator once the TG on the other Hammond goes. A bad finish is often easy to fix compared to taking the whole machinery apart. Ours has a superb finish condition but it had been run dry for more than a decade before it was given to us. So the TG is quite worn :-( Actually it was so bad that when I was done it gulped almost two cans of Hammond oil. Some words of caution: The rectifier tube of the amp in the bottom is located pretty close to the back and it gets freaking hot. I would take care that the organ is never placed against a curtain or other flammable material and that nobody stores any stuff behind it. The power cord on ours almost crumbled in my hands and when attemting to swap it I discovered that this instrument did not have a single fuse. So I made a nice box with fuse and IEC connector. Bronze bearings are routinely made by machinists. Babbit is hardest as it is poured in place but you might be better off replacing them with something else like bronze. Then it is digitally manipulated to add modulation, timbre characteristics, and whatever other effects are required for the instrument. This is calculated for each note and stored in a table in memory, hence the name wavetable. Then this is read out to the digital to analog converter. The resulting sound is hard to tell apart from the real instrument. Another even more realistic and versatile method uses digital building blocks to mimic each physical component. For example in the case of the human voice, the nose, the mouth, windpipe, etc. One can create totally non-existant instruments like a violin that sounds like a flute or whatever else you could possibly imagine. They didn't have broadband internet on cable systems when I worked in the business. I repaired headend and distribution equipment back in the '80s. Actually, I have a Linksys router and a Belkin Wireless G router on my network. The Linksys is in the 192.168.1.X range, but the Belkin is in the 192.168.2.X range. I have it set up this way because the DHCP server in the Belkin is a severe bottleneck, dropping my bandwidth down to barely more than dialup, but the Linksys gives me over 2 Mb per second. Covering the speaker was a rotating funnel with 2 output horns at the apex. The dual rotating horns gave a strong Doppler Effect that was hard to duplicate electronically. A belt turned the rotating funnel which was driven by a variable speed motor under user control. So; still seeking one used knob for the Vol, RF gain or Bandswitch position of a circa 1955 Hallicrafter S-53A. Knob is about one inch diameter and is serrated/ridged. The smaller knobs on this model do 'not have' round aluminum inserts or the silver inner rings of some Hallicrafter style knobs. I also have at least one of the slightly larger Hallicrafter style 'tuning/bandspread' knob; approx 1.5 inches diameter and which 'does have' the inner silver ring. Someone mentioned KF6AR in 2004 was seeking such a knob? Also mentioned was that it may be possible to get a knob (or set of knobs) 'made', but they will 'look' different? Many of the pre-etched proto boards I've seen use most of their real estate for pads and pad-connection strips. There are usually sets of traces for supplying power and ground to the components, but these don't use more than a relatively small amount of the board's copper area and are often run as long strips coming in from the side of the board. As a result, if you have two groups of components which are physically fairly close together, and connect components in these groups to the physically-closest ground pads/strips (minimizing the lead length), you may find that there are actually quite a few inches of PC-board ground trace between one component's "grounded" lead and another. This is usually adequate at DC and audio frequency. At RF, the parasitic inductance of those long looping ground traces can have an adverse effect on the circuit's stability. You can sometimes minimize this by using a star-grounding approach, but since the connection pads are pre-etched into clusters and strips there's likely to be a limit to the number of components that you can connect to a "single point" ground, and it may not be all that good an approximation of a true single-point. One of the recipes for making stable, friendly, and reproducible designs at RF seems to be to minimize the impact of parasitic reactances. As you point out, using "ugly" construction of the Manhattan or free-air (point-to-point) variety minimizes parasitic capacitance between components, and between components and the board. It also has the benefit of minimizing parasitic _inductive_ reactance in the circuit's "ground", if you use a solid copper ground plane as the basis for your construction. "Ground" is always an approximation... a perfect ground cannot be achieved at either DC or RF... but you can get closer if you have lots of copper area to work with. Etched PC boards can be used quite successfully for RF projects, of course, and often are. It's important, when laying out such a board, to minimize unwanted parasitics... leaving large sections of un-etched copper for grounding, using wide traces, paying attention to where the actual ground currents flow, adding ground-shield traces between any signal-carrying traces that might tend to suffer from cross-coupling, and so forth. There are a couple of reasons. One is that leads can generally be kept shorter. The second, and chief reason, is the solid, continuous ground plane. The advantage of the ground plane isn't capacitance reduction as you say, but much lower ground inductance. In a typical PC board layout, currents from various parts of a circuit have to flow through ground traces which can have considerable impedance at RF. This causes voltage drops which are related to each of the currents. The voltages are applied to the connected circuits, resulting in crosstalk and feedback. It's usually possible to get by with a fairly abbreviated ground system, but it can take an awful lot of care and knowledge to do it -- I haven't even run across a lot of otherwise skilled engineers who are good at it. The average home constructor is much more likely to succeed on the solid plane provided by "ugly" construction. It's not uncommon for an "ugly" prototype to work well and a PC board version fail -- unless you have the luxury of using a multiple-layer PC board where you can devote one layer to being a solid ground plane. The chances of succeeding with a PC depends heavily, of course, on the nature of the circuit -- some are vastly more tolerant than others. I personally like "ugly" construction also because it's much faster than making a PC board and, if done right, can be as rugged. Of course the advantages of a PC board are obvious when making multiple copies of a project. I know of what I speak -- I've spent a career designing electronic test equipment, and do consulting in the EMC field (electromagnetic compatibility, dealing with such issues as crosstalk and RFI). The clues so far are normal diode action on a multimeter (ie conducts one way but not the other) but the forward voltage is high at about 1.4 - 1.5 volts. The packaging is a small square black plastic box with flat axial leads one of which has a small cross piece on it. This packaging suggests small signal or at least low power. If anyone wants to look at the mystery diode it is the top one in this picture. http://www.users.bigpond.com/pmcmahon/mysterydiode.jpg The bottom one is a normal glass 1N914 just for scale. There is nowhere for the light to come out (or in) so they are not LEDs which is the only other diode like component I have come across with that high a forward voltage. I've done carfully constructed dead bug (ugly) RF hardware that works well at 2.4ghz and is not ugly It's a very effective techniques and with modest care it's difficult to do better with etched circuits at VHF or higher. Some of my best radios and test gear have been built this way and some test items are now several decades old. It can be very rugged as well. This applies to through hole parts of course - if you want to use SM you will have to use dead bug or professionally made PCBs. You will have to think out your layout carefully before you start - do this on paper. You can always go back and styart again if it is all wrong The board must be scrupulously clean - use steel wool for this and dont touch with fingers afterwards. You can do through hole ICs by cutting a matrix of tape from a single piece on the target board and removing the scrap from beween pads with fine forceps. Cut small squares and strips of tape from sections laid out on another piece of scrap board for traces, resistors, capacitors and transistors. Cut the tape sections with a sharp blade such as a Stanley knife Using fine forceps, lift these and place in your desired layout on the target board as pads and connections on the bottom side. Press down firmly with another tool to stick Cover the top completely with tape as a ground plane. Etch the board in Ferric Chloride. Remove all the pieces of tape Drill holes through the pads with a suitable size PCB drill from the bottom - a small drill press is useful as you will tend to break drills otherwise Any pads connected to ground can be left so that the component lead can be simply soldered to the ground plane, while those that must be insulated are countersunk carefully on the top side to remove a small ring of copper - be careful not to drill right through - use a drill at slow revolutions, or even by hand in a T chuck. Scrub again with steel wool and spray with PCB lacquer With practice you can make quite complex boards - I did a complete triband HF SSB/QRP transceiver using this technique some years ago. I have used some SM components such as 1206 resistors and capacitors, combined with through hole parts on occasion. Could it be two silicon diodes in series? Don't count it out as not being an LED. Some opaque-to-the-human-eye packages are, in fact, quite clear in either the IR or UV range. It could be an IR LED. (There's been many cases where light-sensitive, 'ordinary' diodes caused 'problems' in circuits on a well lit workbench. The 'thing' would work one way in a buttoned-up case, and another way under test.) You could apply power it to as you would an LED (using a current-limiting resistor), and take a look at it in a digital camera's display. Digital cameras are somewhat sensitive to IR, even though they usually have a built-in IR cut filter. Try it with an IR remote control to see what I mean. Dan, KB1RT
