Three experiences - I had a back room in our basement - the house being 4 rooms - small at that. The room I got was like 5'4" high, which I had to duck to walk into as there was a step up into it - were it flat with the rest of the basement - I'd have had no trouble. It was about 6' deep from door to back wall and 5' wide. I had two very small tables in it, a chair and used the small nooks and crannies for storage. The one table being my bench. I was crowded - but I can say - all was in easy reach..... I even had a stereo there for music, bright lights for total illumination, and a few other nice additions. In another home I lived in, I had a small closet for my workbench "and" Ham shack, we were in an apartment building, no basement and the new bride didn't want to see the stuff. Crowded as much as if not more than my room as mentioned above, but hey - it worked for the time. There is something to be said about those close quarters - one thing as I mentioned, all in easy reach. I have a lot more room now, but I DO sort of miss those days! It just goes to show, you adapt when you have to. The more room you get - the more junk you tend to rack up.... As to lighting, I addressed mine as mentioned. Ventilation, it could get stuffy, if soldering a lot - if working on tube equipment, it could get warm. And, if ya ate something good for dinner, you could stink yourself out too! Power - you tend to utilize all sockets and pipe some in from outter rooms if need be. It isn't the end of the world having to deal with such an issue. As they say, ya gotta do - what ya gotta do...... I've even had my work areas when staying in a 26' camper - utilizing - again, any available space. Actually - it can be neat! Its all in how you lay it out and approach it in your mind. One thing - DO NOT block yourself in - in case of fire or shock hazard. Take any appropriate precautions against fire and so on. For doubling the storage capacity of an existing wall of steel cased, plastic drawered component storage cabinets. Obtain some extruded aluminium channel sliding door gear used in domestic clothes cupboards etc. Fix the runners to the top of the cabinet/cabinets.Fix channel to ceiling/stout shelf in front of and above(to avoid fouling top layer of drawers) the existing wall mounted cabinets. Fix a couple of PTFE slabs to base/rear to run against a sheet of wood or metal fixed under the existing units. Cabinets can be doubled up,pop-rivetted together vertically with bridging plates across the joins. Even trebled up if heavy components are placed in the wall mounted units. For every 3 existing units maximum of 2 sliding ones for access, for 4 fixed then 3 sliding etc. Theoretically 2 layers of sliding and 1 layer fixed cabinets would be possible. Other than the obvious comment - more mains outlets, anyone any ideas for avoiding the rat's nest of knotted mains leads to numerous test gear hanging around for perhaps once or twice a month use, so not on a shelf for once a year use. ? -- Diverse Devices, Southampton, England electronic hints and repair briefs , schematics/manuals list on http://home.graffiti.net/diverse:graffiti.net/ Article: 96397 of rec.radio.amateur.homebrew From: mzenier@eskimo.com (Mark Zenier) Subject: Re: WWV receiver Date: Tue, 24 Jan 2006 19:13:32 GMT Message-ID: References: <1138037282.591618.54410@o13g2000cwo.googlegroups.com> In article , xpyttl wrote: >"John S." wrote in message >news:1138037282.591618.54410@o13g2000cwo.googlegroups.com... > >> Are you looking to decode the data transmissions or listen to the voice >> signals. Not everyone cares. Connector losses are a serious issue in the GHz region, but since the OP is talking about an antenna tuner, it appears that the usage is for HF, this is not really an issue. Extra connectors are a reliability issue on the long run, so replacing the connectors on the tuner is a good idea if a thick coaxial cable is to be used. For RG-58 the BNC is quite adequate. Message-ID: <7mpDf.23$M_7.2@fe06.lga> Date: Mon, 30 Jan 2006 09:26:04 -0500 While I haven't built that particular one, I have built a similar design of Peter's with good success. There are some possibilities ... Peter relies on timing for the LCD. If your crystal frequency is higher than the frequency of the hex file you downloaded, or if your LCD is a little off (common if you got the LCD from a hobbyist source) then a blank display or a display of all black squares would be a common result. Check to be sure that the version of the hex file you downloaded matches your crystal frequency. Mag's site is incredibly slow and I haven't located the source, but he at least has the wiring to avoid being dependent on the timing. Whether he did or not I can't tell without seeing the source. Reading the LCD to tell whether it is ready, instead of waiting "long enough" is fairly uncommon because different brands of LCD seem to respond a little differently, but maybe you just got lucky. I would try slowing down your clock a bit as a test. This will give you an incorrect frequency readout, but it would let you know whether timing is the problem. One thing about LCDs -- there is no such thing as too slow, so if the only other crystal you have lying around is a lot slower, it will be fine for the experiment. If it turns out this is the problem, simply increase the LCD delay in Peter's source. .. Not quite. The LCD enable and Register Select lines are swapped between the two circuits. Look carefully -- it is confusing since the R/W line is the same (and it is between the two). Now, all I had to go by was Mag's schematic and Peter's source code. I didn't find either Mag's source or Peter's schematic. But Peter's source does expect LCDEN and RS to be on the opposite pins to Mag's schematic. > And I am using a 4MHz crystal. Most 1x16 displays are 2x8 with the two lines side by side. Mag has to add 0x40 when he gets to the ninth character. Just drop that add and you're good to go. > Did you compile Peter's source code yourself? Yes. Back whenever it was I first started playing I may have used his hex file, that was a long time ago. If you look at the code: movlw LINE1 ; continue at right half of display iorlw 080h ; Function set call PutCMD ; Position cursor leftmost on first line under the label NoDot, this code moves the cursor to the second line. It looks as if all you will see on the second line is the string " MHz" (leading space). Anyway, comment out these three and the " " should get written after the last digit instead of on the second line. Looking more closely at this code, Peter does use the busy flag -- I had looked at his initialization code where he only uses timing, but when he goes to write, he checks the busy. Up at the top of his code, the lines: E equ 2 ; LCD Enable control line RA2 R_W equ 0 ; LCD Read/Write control line RA0 RS equ 1 ; LCD Register-Select control line RA1 set the pins for LCD enable, R/W and Register Select. If you look at Mag's schematic, he places RS on RA0, RW on RA1, and E also on RA2. Peter's comment above those lines would lead you to suspect that they were on PORTB, but he actually uses them on PORTA. If you swap the connections to LCD pins 4 and 5 Peter's code might work. .. Ken, You admit you have NO knowledge of present day ham usage of AM. And apparently NO knowledge of old timey AM use. Properly designed, built and used low level modulation works and sounds good. I get glowing reports with my DX-60B, slightly modified to improve the bass response. And a Bullet Astatic Mic. And with the new rice boxes, if you adjust it right, you can get excellent audio out of them. It would be appropriate for a narrowband, tuned transformer, but that's not what the schematic indicates. It's a broadband transformer which has different requirements for a core. What you need is high winding impedance, not the high Q and relatively low impedance provided by the cores Frank is recommending. An appropriate core is a "low frequency" ferrite such as Fair-Rite (and Amidon) type 70-series (72, 73, 77, etc), or type 43 which is very widely used for EMI filtering applications. You can easily identify "low frequency" ferrites because they're the only ones which give you any continuity (although the R might be high) when probed at two points with an ohmmeter. Type 43 can't be identified this way -- they'll show an open circuit. As for core size, the number of turns specified on the diagram will provide enough impedance with any core of size half inch diameter or so, or larger, and with normal geometry. You could probably get by with a core smaller than that if necessary. High frequeny ferrites (which aren't suitable) like 61 are relatively rare, so if you have any ferrite cores in your junk box, they're likely to be ok. Powdered iron cores won't give you enough winding impedance. Those are type 43 ferrite (Fair-Rite designation), the most common kind. Your cores will be just fine for this and similar applications. You're definitely not the only one confused about core types. Very few people seem to understand what the requirements are for cores used in various applications and therefore what cores are suitable for a given application. Problems with CHU's configuation that this proposal addresses The 3.3µs per km of path that makes CHU's signals problamatic for users in Western Canada. Even the NRC realizes this: "for all distant users of CHU, the dominant source of time error comes from the radio wave path reflecting off the ionosphere as the radio signal travels from the transmitter". The poor quality of CHU reception in Western Canada and the Artic, North of 55º Latitude. It is suggested that the 7335 kHz frequecny be reused, but it may be advisable to find alternate frequences. The CHU signal fomat may need to be tweaked so as to take into consideration 2 transmitter sites. A new set of atomic clocks will be needed, as well as equipement to sync them to NRC's atomic clocks. It may be possible to obtain secondhand atomic clocks from UBC (Vancouver) or other universities in Western Canada. This proposal could be replicated in Newfoundland using another existing CHU frequency, as Eastern Canada has CHU coverage problems as well. Universally upgrading CHU's Ottawa transmitters to 10 kw may not fix CHU coverage problems in Western or Eastern Canada. If I have to pay shipping, I might as well order enough parts to at least make up for the shipping costs... Does any of you guys know where to find a schematic for a Yaesu FP-757HD power supply? It has a 3-terminal regulator in it, it looks like a 317, but it has funky markings on it which say B824, then down and to the right it says Q5D. It might be an O or 0 (zero) 5D. Do you guys know if you can replace this B824 thing with an LM317? The transistors are oddballs too but I haven't gotten the number for them. If I have to, I can just start from scratch on it, there's not much to it and there were a couple of caps with the legs corroded off. I can probably just come up with my own regulator as easy as I can fix this one unless I can find a schematic. Do you guys know where to find a schematic for this thing? There is a special regulator in the power supply for the FT-301 that is no longer available. Contacting Vertex led to a replacement subassembly for about $6. Not bad support for a 25 year old piece of equipment.
