Message-ID: <3FB5713C.2B25CAF3@comcast.net> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit All, A couple of weeks ago, I sent an email to my Senator from South Carolina, Lindsey Graham, explaining the interference problems in sending BPL at HF over unshielded power lines and and possible relaxation of the Part 15-C regulations. Today I received a WRITTEN response as below. I was pleased to find out that Senator Graham was at least very aware of the issue and was willing to remember the concerns I expressed. If you want to do more than filing a comment, perhaps you can consider writing to your Congressional Senator or Representative. It may make a difference... Here is what Senator Graham wrote: "Dear Howard: Thank you for taking the time to contact me with your concerns regarding Broadband over Power Line (BPL). I appreciate the opportunity to hear from you on this issue. As you know, BPL is designed to provide consumers with access to broadband services from any room in the house by plugging a BPL device into an existing electrical outlet. This service would allow individuals access to broadband without adding additional connections. As part of its ongoing effort to to promote spectrum flexibility and access to broadband services for all Americans, and to encourage multiple platforms for broadband, especially new facilities-based platforms, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) issued a Notice of Inquiry seeking public comment on using existing electrical power lines to provide Internet and broadband services to homes and offices. I recognize your concerns regarding BPL technology. Since the comment period of FCC Docket 03-104 is still open, I encourage you to contact the FCC directly at 1-888-CALL-FCC to express your concerns. I will also keep your thoughts in find if legislation affecting the FCC's decision is considered by the United States Senate. Again, I appreciate hearing from you. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I may be of further assistance to you or to your family. Sincerely, Lindsey O. Graham United States Senator" The second and third paragraphs provide some insight into how the advantages of BPL have been explained to the Senator. Thanks for the bandwidth... 73, Skip (Howard) KH6TY ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Nov 2003 01:50:17 +0100 (CET) From: dl6aaf@t-online.de To: qrp-l@lehigh.edu Subject: [161258] Fwd: Sunday (November 16th): HOT-PARTY Message-ID: <200311150050.hAF0oJi01118@joringel.privnet.de> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit From: DJ7ST @ DB0ABZ.#NDS.DEU.EU (Hartmut) To: OQRPWW @ DB0ABZ.#NDS.DEU.EU X-Info: Einspielung ohne Passwortschutz 13-15 UTC 40m; 15-17 UTC 80m Rules & summary-/logsheet have been uploaded here in packet radio some days ago. hpe cu!? 73/2 "Hal", DJ7ST ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Nov 2003 20:26:09 -0500 From: Ed Lawson-K1VP To: qrp-l@lehigh.edu Subject: [161259] OHR 500-IF filter Message-ID: <20031114202609.450f2f72.k1vp@grizzy.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I just did a quick check with my OHR 500 and a signal becomes inaudible around 500HZ from center of signal on both sides give or take 100Hz. It was not working, but I found a cold solder joint; the unit now appears to work but needs calibration. Would someone who owns a WM-2 please tell me the alignment info. I understand there's a builtin voltage source that is used to adjust the pots on each scale for the proper meter reading, to substitute for a calibrated RF source. I've traced the circuit out and have made a circuit diagram, but it's not obvious to me what dc voltage would correspond to what power for each meter scale. OHR's webpage says I can buy the manual for $10, but I don't need a manual, I just need the calibration info, if I can obtain it. I've got a signal generator with calibrated 200mW maximum output--I can adjust the lowest scale to read more or less accurately, but the two higher scales interact with the lowest scale, and I don't have an RF source with higher accurate known power to calibrate them. And it appears the highest scale (10W) needs to be adjusted first, then the next scale, with the lowest power scale last. Thanks to anyone who is willing to take the time to look in their WM-2 manual and give me that cal info. But since few of us can errect a 130 foot tower, or even afford one, a good second best is a 1/4 wave inverted "L". Make the vertical section as long as practical, as this bottom section is where most of radiation comes from. Also, be aware there is a null in the direction the top section runs. It needs to be feed with a series L/C circuit and have a decent ground system. You can convert to a parallel tuned circuit to use it on 80 as a 1/2 wave. I threw up a make shift inverted L for the 160M contest last fall/winter and did reasonably well with 30 watts SSB. It was too bad my null was to the SW, as that was a direction which would have netted a few more stations. It was a good thing those160 contest stations have good ears too :-) 72, Steve, KD1JV "Melt Solder" White Mountains of New Hampshire http://www.qsl.net/kd1jv/ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Nov 2003 22:51:08 -0700 From: "Dave Ek" To: "QRP-L" Subject: [161269] Re: Headlamp Message-ID: <004b01c3ab3c$782b7fd0$6801a8c0@dad> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="Windows-1252" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I have one of these, too. You guys are the best! Now to report back on what I found out concerning my OHR 500 IF filter: I decided to look at the bandpass visually using my laptop computer and my digital mode program, HamScope . This is a good way to see what you are hearing, even with a CW transceiver. I found that the displayed "lighted" bandpass on the waterfall, extended from about 400 Hz up to 1400 or 1500 Hz. It was then that I realized the original owner / builder from whom I bought the rig, chose a rather odd placement of the BFO injection frequency. It was on the correct side of the IF bandpass, but was too far above it in frequency. So using the manual to guide me, I retuned the BFO about 400 Hz closer to the filter's passband. Wow, now anything above about 1100 Hz was severely attenuated, and the CW I was listening to, was much easier to copy, and there was far less QRM able to reach the headphones. I also noted that now I was NOT able to hear any signals on the wrong sideband as I did before (albeit faintly). The manual instructs the builder to tune in a signal to the center of the dial and adjust the trim capacitor C231 to obtain a 600 or 700 Hz note. It appears that doing this by ear can result in a faulty placement of the BFO injection frequency. Using PSK software could help homebrewers "see" what they are dong with the IF, BFO, etc., more clearly. Now, finally, I see why the brilliant designers of Elecraft gear instruct builders to use their software program to align their rigs. Sorry I was so slow on the uptake concerning my perceived problem. I am really happy this turned out like it did. I think I'm gonna give my little OHR rig a big hug. 72, Jerry KD0CA ____________________________________________________________ Free 20MB Web Site Hosting and Personalized E-mail Service! Something I have always disdained has been physical layout drawings between the schematic and wiring stages. I'm not talking about chassis/switch/whatever layouts; nor wirewrap boards-just schematic to breadboard physical drawings. But, the notion of just how involved physically you MUST be, when translating the schematic to the physical, kept bothering me-after all: you cannot take the leads on an SMT transistor and change the center pin to be 'pin 1' but you can just rotate the part itself. Then there is the fact that SMT components MUST be 'tied down' in at least one place... whether you tack-solder a lead down, or glue the component... otherwise a bump or a sneeze would be disastrous! So this morning I sat down and did a 20 x 20 pad-per-hole drawing, converted it to a PDF, and put it on my website, near the top of one of the Homebrew pages. Here's the URL: . I hope you find it useful. 72/73 Ed Tanton N4XY Ed Tanton N4XY 189 Pioneer Trail Marietta, GA 30068-3466 website: http://www.n4xy.com All emails & checked by Norton AntiVirus with AutoProtect LM: ARRL QCWA AMSAT & INDEXA; SEDXC NCDXA GACW QRP-ARCI OK-QRP QRP-L #758 K2 (FT) #00057 -------------------------------------------------- "He that gives up a little liberty to gain temporary security will lose both and deserve neither". --Benjamin Franklin "Suppose you were an idiot ... and suppose you were a member of Congress... but I repeat myself." --Mark Twain -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Nov 2003 17:13:22 -0500 From: Steven Weber To: qrp-l@lehigh.edu Subject: [161299] Headlamps Message-ID: <3.0.6.32.20031115171322.007a3410@mailhost.ncia.net> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" I noticed Wal-Mart now has a selection of LED headlamps, four all together that I saw last night. But I also know that there are members of these reflectors who have sons, daughters or other relatives serving in our Armed Forces; so I am continuing with this post, anyway. I found out about Operation AC by listening to broadcast AM radio. Operation AC was started by the Mayo family who live in Delaware and have a son who is stationed in Iraq. They desperately wanted to send an air conditioning unit to him, in order to help him cope with the intense Iraqi summer heat. They found that Home Depot was willing to lend a hand; and then someone got the idea to start sending air conditioners and other needed supplies to our troops in Iraq. Now winter is setting in; and as we get ready to celebrate Thanksgiving and the Holidays, it occured to me that it would be nice to send a heater over to some GI. The Operation AC folks are now in the process of taking donations of heater, boots, and other non-essential; but yet welcome amenities for our troops. If you'd like to make a donation; there's a link from my Webpage - just click on the Operation AC banner at: http://www.qsl.net/w2lj or you can go directly to: http://www.operationac.com It's this time of year when we give thanks for what we have. There are a lot of our fellow citizens who are doing their duty in a foreign land, away from their friends and family so we can continue to appreciate the bounty that Providence has decided to bestow upon us and our country. It just seemed like the right thing to do. I'd like to state up front that I have no connection to Operation AC or the Home Depot, or with anyone else associated with this venture. I'm just a concerned citizen who wanted to do something. Thanks for the bandwidth! 73 de Larry W2LJ - Vivat Morse! Well, actually, it's 5185 KHz shift for a while. SOFTWARE! We need SOFTWARE! Been doing a little CW and RTTY testing of the DSWMULTI project...hardware-wise that is...today. Uh, actually, there is some software involved in today's experiments...KD5HIO's HamScope. It's kinda neat, listening to mark & space frequencies 5185 KHz apart...using separate receivers. Of course, I mustn't release that 8903 KHz(14088-5185) space freq upon the ether...FCC might not take kindly to such. So, the DSW-20 is currently piped to the Heathkit Cantenna. Next, I must write the DSWMULTI software version of DSWTUN03 so I can reduce the shift to 170 Hz...possibly other shifts as well. Pesky software anyway... Guess this project *could* be adapted to work with other DDS-based rigs, such as the Elecraft KX1, though, I have no idea why anyone would... BTW, I'm using my 'old' DSW-20 for the project after all since I haven't yet built my DSW-II-20. But, it'll work ok too...honest ;) 73. Maybe if we all gang up on him >and twist his arm a bit, he might pursue it further. > You don't have to gang up on me or twist my arm :-) I've already tried out some software to make the Atmel "Butterfly" demo board do this job. The Butterfly costs $20.00 from Digi-Key, is fully assembled, comes with a 6 character LCD display and runs on a 3V button cell. (biggest one I've ever seen, hi) Plus it's slightly smaller than a credit card. You can even down load the software into the demo board yourself. (with the help of a 20 meg program you need to down load from Atmel) Anyway, all I need is for someone to loan me thier WM-2 for a couple of weeks to verify the accuracy and figure out the proper scalling. And you'll have to build a second diode compenstion amp if you want it to calculate SWR on the fly. 72, Steve, KD1JV "Melt Solder" White Mountains of New Hampshire http://www.qsl.net/kd1jv/ ------------------------------ End of QRP-L Digest 3105 ************************ --------------------------------
