It means they're getting out, and hearing well, so it's validation that everything is working, including the op. Even the ones who don't say they like it, also don't think it slows things down noticeably. The same is true of mobile stations, BTW. Personally, adding QRP to the call isn't going to slow things down nearly as much as a PSK31 or SSTV QSO. I've done this survey on several DXpeditions, including 3D2CI, K1B, S05X, TZ6RD. Me, I love hearing QRPers. Note that one of the goals of the TS7N trip was "to serve the novices in US and Japan". That being said, remember, during a pileup, they know their own call, and don't want to hear it from you more than once during the QSO, and preferably never. They want as few prosigns as necessary, and only want to hear "599" once, also. OTOH, if and only if, they're "lonely" (calling CQ a lot), then a very little chat is fine, like "thanks for the new one", or "you're 20 over here", or "you just put me on the honor roll", or even "who's the good op?" 73, doug Date: Sun, 23 Nov 2003 13:33:06 -0700 From: "James R. Duffey" Gene and Carrie - Most DXpedition ops are there to make the most contacts they can. They don't like to have any exchanges any longer than necessary. Thus they usually do not like to hear callers sign /QRP. It adds to the length of hte QSO. On short DXpeditions or those very rare ones, the additional time a /QRP on every QRP station they worked would add up to several QSOs that they could have made and didn't becasue of hte additional time a /QRP cost. It doesn't pay to upset the DXpedition op since he is the one that eventually determines whether or not you will receive a confirmation. I personally think that signing /QRP is a request for special treatment. I don't operate QRP to get sepcial treatment, I operate it for the challenge. There are other ways of making your call stand out from the rest. delaying the start of calling a second. increasing or decreasing your keying weighting slightly, and having a good antenna all work. /QRP does as well, but it is not usually appreciated by the op at the other end. - Dr. Megacycle KK6MC/5 ______________________ James R. While we refer to a 10 kHz marker, we are actually using the harmonics of the 10 kHz signal that are spaced 10 kHz apart. These marker signals are quite loud in the ham bands and are used in the ham bands. My VE3DNL marker generator puts out usable signals in the 6 M band, although they are not overpowering. - Dr. Megacycle KK6MC/5 ______________________ James R. My point was not that the DXpeditions didn't like to work QRPers, I know that they do, but they don't like to deal with the /QRP in the call. According to the replies here that is not as widely accepted as being good operating practice as I had thought. :^) Live and learn. Message-ID: Mime-version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit Sergio - Do you have the problem when operating the station from a battery and disconnected from the AC main? You may have the AC ground competing with the RF ground. This will draw groans from the UL bunch, but you might try isolating the station from AC ground by using a three prong to 2 prong AC adapter on the PS. Alternately, you might wind the DC supply line from the PS to the rig around a ferrite core so that the station is not grounded at RF through the AC line. You might also want to wrap the AC cord from the PS around a ferrite core as well. Another trick would be to lengthen or shorten the wire you are using to see if the problem is still there. - Dr. Megacycle KK6MC ______________________ James R. I know. I bought one of Diz's standards and was skeptical as well because of the voltage divider, etc. but it turned out to be really stable. I put it into ch. a of a scope and a HP gps disciplined 10MHz reference (10e-12 stability) into ch. b. There is a few hz drift at turn-on, and that's about it. Once warmed up and set to 10.000 it stays there all day, mine does anyway, within about 1 or 2 Hz. The warmup drift is much lower than my DDS generator that uses a 120MHz crystal oscillator. It takes hours to stabilize as the box warms up. I left the DDS generator on for 24 hours before the FMT and then calibrated it to the HP right before the test. But Diz's little reference it much more stable. Now if I could just use Diz's reference in my DDS generator . . . . . ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Nov 2003 22:14:17 -0500 From: "AI2Q" To: , "'Low Power Amateur Radio Discussion'" Subject: [161761] RE: more on the artificial ground.. It's sure to be more pronounced on the higher bands, where the same capacitance is a greater part of the effective LC tank that the series-tuned "artificial ground" represents. The "ground" is a series-tuned LC circuit, so it presents a low-Z to your antenna tuner, thus providing a path for "return current." Perhaps a longer shaft on the "ground," along with an insulated coupler and a knob would provide the isolation that you need so that you can adjust it to series-resonance without having your hand-C affect its tuning. Most spammers use forged addresses so you won't really know where it goes. If it goes anywhere your email address is recorded as valid and you get even more spam. Best to use a spam filter in you mail handling process. My ISPs use such filters and I see little spam. My main ISP uses MailArmory, www.mailarmory.com. I also use a Yahoo premium account for hobby-interest-email Yahoo has good spam filtering and now offers "disposable addresses" to help fight spam. Other options are Mail Washer, http://www.mailwasher.net/ and SpamCop, http://www.spamcop.net/ This long Google link: http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Software/Internet/Clients/Mail/Windows/Tools/Anti_Spam/?tc=1 will lead you to many other spam fighting tools. Many, many helpful suggestions came in, and I thank each and every one of you. This is an amazing resource! Several respondants suggested I retest loading the antenna system with another rig and start from scratch with the tuner to rule out a tuner and/or antenna issue. I had done it pretty quickly in the first round, so hitched the Ten Tec 1320 up to the system and started from a neutral setting (if you haven't yet, see the "Tuner Tutorial" on the List website--great instructions for how to operate a tuner). Used the 1320 because it puts out enough power to keep my cheapo swr meter in line. The results: the original settings for optimal 20m tuning were matched exactly. Ok, not the tuner, meter, nor antenna system. It's the 180S. I think it was Weds when I got around to swaping antenna leads and firing up the 180S, and we were in the middle to a significant solar event. Voices sounded like gargling gravel: I was about ready to pull the rig off-line when I caught an op talking about the lousy conditions. Decided waiting was a better option. A day or so later I fired up the 180S and repeated my start from neutral. Wouldn't you know it--same exact tuner settings as the 1320 for optimal 20m operations. Did it 3 times in a row with the same results. A couple of folks figured my finals were out, and so suggested I check the range of power. Blew a lot of rf out without a hitch. Also had several suggest the "sniff" test when pushing rf---didn't encounter any unusual scents. A couple of ops noted that when finals begin to go bad, they sometimes do funny things like work fine one day and mess-up the next. That's my current theory--but at the moment I'm pleased my "antique" is functional for some more qsos. Now if I can just get it to work right for the next fox hunt.... 73 and tnx for all the help, esp. MailWasher will send a bounce message back to the spammers indicating your email address is no good. However, much of the spam is designed by the sender to have no valid return address so this won't work in many cases. Or some spammers will spoof someone's email address as their return address. I had that happen to me and got around 1000 bounce messages from that spammer's bad addresses on their spam mailing list. Just remember, NEVER NEVER just reply to a spam message or try to unsubscribe. That only let's the spammer know he's found a good email address, and he'll sell or otherwise pass your address along to other spammers. The best thing about MailWasher is that all the work is done right on the server without downloading the email to your computer, thus saving you a lot of time and protecting you from any viruses contained in the email. It has many ways of detecting what is spam and what isn't, including user-designed filters, user blacklists, user friends list, master on-line blacklists, etc. For example I have a filter that searches the entire header of an email for 'qrp-l' and if MailWasher finds that, it flags that message as 'QRP-L' and marks it for deletion since I don't bother downloading the numerous QRP-L emails, but simply read them on the server via MailWasher, then unmark those I want to download. All those still marked are then deleted when I press the process email button. To deal with the spam that had my address as their return address, I studied the headers to find something common to them all and that wouldn't be in my regular emails, set up a filter, and had MailWasher delete those automatically without even having to look at them. To use an old phrase, I think MailWasher is the best thing since sliced bread. And no, I'm not affiliated with them in any way except as a delighted user. It's available both as a freeware (somewhat limited, but still very good) version and a commercial version for $29.95 USD. The link is www.mailwasher.net. The accessory sold for $20 or under. In addition to the printed circuit board itself, there were three critical components: the subminiature switch, a Bourns pot and a high-quality machined knob. Each of those three items cost about $4 apiece, but worse yet, was a sole-source part with 8-10 week lead times from the manufacturers. I typically bought parts 10 at a time from the distributors, so lengthy delays were all too common when the distributors ran out! It wouldn't be hard to produce a similar product at lower cost, but this was a quality offering- it was important to me that the item 'harmonized' nicely with the SW+ enclosure kit. My degree's not in rocket science, but I nevertheless realized that this accessory offering was a goodwill deal rather than a viable product. I could have offered the RIT accessory at what any vendor would consider a reasonable markup, but that runs smack-dab into a 'perceived-value' issue. I'm not convinced that many folks would sit still for a $30-35 RIT accessory for a $55 transceiver kit! I have no plans to re-introduce the RIT accessory as an adjunct to the existing SW+ series. That's called a 'business opportunity' for anyone who feels they would do well with this. [ Please note, however- the design and documentation of the RIT accessory you see at the URL mentioned earlier? It's the intellectual property of Walt Thomas, K3ASW. He and I had a business arrangement relative to its commercial use.] 73- Dave *************************************** Dave Benson, K1SWL dave@smallwonderlabs.com http://smallwonderlabs.com Phone/fax 860-537-8031 ************************************** -----Original Message----- From: sjolin To: Low Power Amateur Radio Discussion Date: Monday, November 24, 2003 6:31 AM Subject: Re: SW+ RIT mod > I'd also like to know more about that mod. *Why* did > Small Wonder Labs stop offering it? The converse is you don't know how poorly you understand something until you try to teach it to someone else. I have been thinking about teaching my daughter (14) about propagation by creating a simple game where a person has to establish communications with someone in a different part of the world and they have to take into account skip, frequency, angles etc. As I started to formulate how the game would work I realized there are significant gaps in my knowledge. Realizing I need expert advice I have decided to ask the list. My first idea was to have a picture of a satellite dish that would shoot signals. You could point it straight up and determine the critical frequency. Also you would want the virtual height of the ionosphere. Now this brings in some questions: 1. What is the relationship between critical frequency and virtual height? Wouldn't virtual height depend on the operating frequency? The virtual height would be important since it would allow the game to predict the "bounces". 2. When you are aiming straight up and emitting signals does the setup still require refraction to bring the signal down again. I suspect it does but I am having trouble visualizing refraction when the angle of incidence is 0. Brian. I purchased and used MailWasher for a bit and it is a good product. However, there are two things about it that have prevented me from using it anymore. 1. You still have to read all the message headers (subject line/return address) and make sure spam is marked correctly. It makes very good guesses and marks many items by itself but you still need to look through the list to make sure it didn't miss any or marked some valid e-mails. For me, this process was more annoying than just ignoring the spam in the first place. Also, I didn't find that it cut down significantly in the amount of spam I received. I believe most, if not all, spam-prevention systems require you to spend time adding 'intelligence' to the process. Right now, spam is not annoying enough for me to bother. 2. I suspect that my Win98SE system became much more unstable after installing it. After nuking my drive, installing Win98SE from scratch, and NOT re-installing MailWasher, blue screens are much less frequent. Of course, it was probably interaction with other things I had installed - YMMV. Recently I have been laying out a circuit board for it with the idea that I might make it available as a kit or pre-built assembly if there is enough interest. I hadn't planned to announce it until the board was finished and the price determined, but I decided to mention it since this thread was going. I will post more details as the work progresses. 72, Jerry - W0PWE e-mail: W0PWE(at)ARRL(dot)net _________________________________________________________________ Need a shot of Hank Williams or Patsy Cline? Any help from the gang here will be appreciated. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I am still sorting out a few things on my 'new to me' 706MKII. Q1: On CW, with the Shift control at center, should the graphic on G2 show the IF passband to be centered on the frequency? Mine shows the passband shifted to the far right. On occasion, this has meant that I couldn't hear a signal until I centered the IF on the signal. Q2: For the last week or so, I have had an extra 17M segment in the Band Stacking Register. How do I get rid of it? Confusingly, when I set up a 60M segment it's always disappearing! Thanks Stephen ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Nov 2003 15:20:54 -0500 From: "John J. With an SSB filter, the signal is, of course, at the edge of the passband. the passband essentially represents audio from 0.3 to 3 khz, so your 700 Hz CW signal should be toward the edge. You shouldn't have to move the passband to hear the signal, however. Moving the passband does seem to reduce the high frequency part of the hiss, though, so perhaps it isn't a bad strategy. Q2 - This is the confusing bit. There is one entry in the band stacking registers per ham band, plus one. The extra one gets allocated to whatever you happen to listen to outside the ham band. So, go to 160 meters, tune down to the AM broadcast band, and now that extra band will be between 70 cm and 160 m. Now if, instead, you set up a 60 m segment, it will stay there until you tune outside the ham band on one of the other bands. (It's a little vague about what constitutes "outside" however). 72/73 de WB8RCR http://www.qsl.net/wb8rcr didileydadidah QRP-L #1446 Code Warriors #35 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stephen Wandling" To: "Low Power Amateur Radio Discussion" Sent: Monday, November 24, 2003 2:30 PM Subject: IC-706 Questions > I will try one more time. I have the standard filter. In CW the signal shows at the 'left' side of the passband. On SSB the signal shows in the centre. This is with the Shift know in the centre. You mention that if I have a 'CW filter', the sig should be in the centre. Are you referring to one of the optional filters? I presume so, because later you say that the CW sig should be toward the edge and I am presuming this is for the 'standard' filter. I know what you mean about the hiss when near the edge of the passband. Your explanation of the stacking registers fits perfectly with my experiences and explains the mystery! Thanks Stephen John J. Just hook up an antenna and you're ready to operate. Condition on everything is an 8+. The only negative is that someone replaced the small knobs with non-stock knobs, they do not look bad and look close to stock, but they are not stock. I can send pictures for those interested. I called Ten Tec today and was told the guy who would know for sure if they had them was on vacation this week, but he thought there were some of the small knobs available.
